I am considering retiring in Cuenca. I run and rise almost everyday. Is it possible and safe to do this in Cuenca safely?

That was not rise but cycle in Cuenca. I run and cycle everyday. Would this be a safe activity in Cuenca?

Hi Ericka
Running is very popular in Cuenca, with several areas (along the rivers, in parks). Traffic can be annoying and not very respectful, but you shortly learn how to deal with it. Mountain biking is a delight, with lots of single tracks and rural roads -and plenty of dogs-. Road cycling is possible, but beware the traffic.

I'm also an avid runner and cyclist comtemplating retirement in Cuenca. Ericka, if you do retire in Cuenca can you please let me know how it works out for you? I'm still a few years away from retirement but the running/cycling issue is very important to me and I'd love to get firsthand remarks from someone who lives in Cuenca. Thanks!

I'm looking for a 5k Road race in Cuenca - anybody know of one between now and March, 2013? BTW, I've been in Cuenca for 4 weeks now and my body is still trying to adjust to the altitude. However, I am able to run downhill and walk/run back up the hills. There are usually several other runners (and bikes) out on the loop that I run and the dogs haven't bothered me. It seems to be a safe city to run and bike in. I really would like to find a 5K to train for so that I would have a little more motivation getting back up the hills!

Ann: Been here 8 weeks and doing as you - running down hill/walking uphill but per Km times are improving. There is an 8k on Mar 31st. Starts near the sponsoring commercial mercado - La Cella, I think -on Mariscal Lamar just west of Huayna Capac. I threw away the flyer when I saw the final 1km was up Huayna Capac. That has got to be a 100-200 meter climb. Otherwise, there seems to be little on the web. There are other races since I stumbled on the after race event at El Vergel last Sunday. I have a contact that is working on information - his brother runs.
