rick d,
Sorry I misquoted the price to ship via container. It was not $1,740.00, but
$2,740.00. this included picking up my stuff and storing it at their storage facility until loaded onto a container.
If your not a returning citizen of Ecuador you will have to pay taxes on what is in your container. When you fill out your manifest for what is inside the container you have to list the item,(i.e. LG 50" LDC TV, etc.), the value of each item. Does not mater to customs if it is new or not, you will be taxed.

As I suggested to you, get quotes from movers in the US and ask each one of them if they have an agent at the port to help you with the paperwork for customs. Ecuador loves paperwork, the more then better. Expect to wait 4 to 6 weeks to get your items. Depending on the moving company in the USA and their agents, you can chose pickup, or to your door delivery.

You will have to do research on your end for moving companies and ask who their port agent is or might be. Some don't have one and you will have to get your own. There will be additional document fees and agent fees here also. The agent I suggested speaks english.(I would suggest you go to their website and send them an email.)

Does anyone know of a shipping company that ships cars to Ecuador?
I only know of companies in Miami, FL. It is easy enough to do a google search to locate shippers and get rates.

Keep in mind that you can only ship a new car into Ecuador.

I drove from Miami to Ecuador in my 2000 Toyota Camry. My original dea was tomake it to Argntina, and then back north through Brazil, Venezuela, and from Venezuela ship the car ack to Miami... Well, I ran out of money in Ecuador. Now I have my car in Guayaquil, and I need to ship it back. I've been having a big problem finding someone that can help me with this in Ecuador... Contacted a few people but then comunication goes blank!
Does anyone know of a willing and responsible shipper (freight forwarder) in Ecuador?
BTW, coming in from Colombia to Ecuador via land was extremely easy and un-eventfull
Could I "total" (junk) my car in Ecuador, and be released of having to export the car out?

wow, there is so much misinformation here .. I just drove my RV / truck from California to southern Argentina and am now in Ecuador after 14 months on the road. People all along the way were friendly and helpful. Mexico, Guatamala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica Panama, and on to the southern tip of Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, now Quito. Next country, Colombia, and everyone I meet coming from there says it is a wonderful country, warm friendly people, and people (and this is true all along the way) is friendly and will help you stay away and out of trouble if you ask.

You can drive into Ecuador, no problem, they give you 3 months on your Vehicle and on your visa, but if you are not out of the country by then, there is a $210 fine for your vehicle if you are not out in 3 months. However, you can extend that time, but I have not faced that so I do not know the process.

Don't be afraid, travel, see the world, it is wonderful and plenty of people are doing it. Be respectful, be cautious for sure, but be cautious in Oakland, New York, Calcutta, Nairobi, Buenos Aires ...... with the stock market, TARP and on and on.

Cristhian:

OK, now I am confused. I read in so many places we cannot bring a used car into Ecuador?

Can I bring in a used Toyota 4Runner or other used car that is registered in the USA? Can I bring in a motorcycle that is also registered in the USA?

Where can I read the regulations on this? If I bring them in when I first move to Ecuador are there any taxes to pay and how are they computed?

Thank you in advance.

I am slowly learning....

I bought my new suv here in Ecuador. Had to pay a higher price, but have warranty and good service and it helps put the money into the local economy. I don't think it would be worth the trouble to import on your own. Very little savings in the end

James; I am considering moving to Ecuador, but am handicapped and use a wheelchair. A car would be extremely useful to me - getting in/out of taxis are very difficult, buses impossible, etc. Since you did take one, can you give me any advise? Thanks

Did I miss something? Did anyone refer to a bribe when asking about taking a car to Ecuador????
Please wrote:
Hi,
I have lived in the States and in Ecuador for almost half my life. There is a scam to encourage someone to buy a new car and ship it to Ecuador. While you can do that, by no means you can cheat the customs here in Ecuador. There is no bribery allowed and new laws are thougher than in the US for those who try to brive someone.
There is no way you can bring a car that is more than the current year of the intended import date. The scam artist makes you pay to bribe customs and the scam artist usually states that he/she works for the gov or is a family member of the President. And guess what? he/she gets your money and your car ends up on hold in customs until you pay all taxes(Lots of money). Just do not buy that fellows!!
Well yes, you can still bring your new car and pay all your duties, saying you pay your insurance from point of sale to the door of the receipent there should be no problem and the paperwork is done in about 10 to 15 day to clear your car out. You can then sell your car to anyone.
There has been nationals (Ecuador) that are living abroad and want to bring their cars, well, they are allowed. But in the registration there is a note that you are unable to sell your car for about 5 years. Yes, some can go and sell it to some "idiot" that buys it with the note in the registration but end up in jail when they try to register it in their name. The car is also confiscated.
Of course there are dealers that import 200k plus cars and end up with a lumpsump of earnings, but that requires to have a legaly stablished company here in Ecuador and pay all your taxes.
And please, dont drive to Ecuador unless you join a group of cars and rally or 4x4 enthusiasts that do that for fun since your car will be worthless by the time you drive that much miles and mountains.
Ok, and to end with my story, I bought a decent 2002 Lada Niva 4x4 that is neat at about 3,500 dollars (since US dollars is the legal currency and the only one used) here in Ecuador and is working just perfectly.
I hope this info helps.
