You can only import a new car into Ecuador!

You can only import a new car into Ecuador. If your still not sure, do a google search for the Euadorean embassy or consulate closest to you. The embassy in Washington has the most info on what you can bring into Ecuador.

so what is the verdict on driving cars in to Ecuador? It seems reasonable to ship my older car to costa rica or panama and drive it Ecuador. I doubt the roads are going to ruin it that bad, it's only 800 or so miles. What happens at the boarder when I'm driving Canada plates into Ecuador on a 3 month tourist visa? how is the car treated when it has another countries tags on it? any feedback is appreciated.. thanks!

So info for you:

"Driving into Ecuador is discouraged. It is preferable to enter the country by airplane or boat because of the frontier issues with neighboring countries."

"The entire network of roads in North, Central, and South America connect, except for a 50 km (30 miles) gap between Colombia and Panama known as the Darien Gap." You would have to ferry your car after the Darien Gap. Also driving through Colombia with the FARC isn't recommended.

"Driving a private vehicle into Ecuador can be a huge hassle, depending largely upon the mood of the official who stops you at the border. To bring your car into Ecuador, you are officially required to have a Carnet de Passage en Douane (CPD), an internationally recognized customs document that allows you to temporarily ‘import’ a vehicle into Ecuador without paying an import tax. The document is issued through an automobile club in the country where the car is registered, and you are strongly advised to obtain one well in advance."

"You will need an international drivers license, which is good for a year from the date of issue. This is available through AAA offices. You will need two (2) passport IDs also for the permit. And of course, a passport and your current drivers license from the state you are driving from in the US."

Also here is a page from the Ecuadorean Emabassy in Washington, D.C. that might be worth reading: http://www.ecuador.org/miscellaneous.htm NOTE SECTION: Temporary entry of vehicles

I am sorry I could not answer all your questions, I would check on the nearest Ecuadorean Embassy nearest you, and set up an appointment to find out the answers to your license plates, etc. I would assume you would have to register, buy insurance and pay for plates, but not sure.

Do not 'assume' on the road conditions, especially in Ecuador. Roads to the north are on steep sides of hills and are poorly maintained I am told. roads and highways in the cities tend to be a little better.

No, it is not possible. Read the many posts before yours please.

You can only import a NEW automobile. You also have to make sure you have correct paperwork with the correct VIN numbers, Engine numbers, etc. If anything is wrong on your paperwork it will be a long day for you. Registering a car here isn't like in the US. Think for like driving to a toll booth on the highway. 12 lanes to accommodate new and renewing registrations that are done yearly. After your 1/2 day wait you have to wait in another line to get your license plates,(which have to holes in them attaching to your car).

Ecuador just past a green law favoring hybrids, and electric cars. Gas only cars will also have to pay a gasoline penalty for gasoline only. Hybrids and electric cars will pay no import taxes and fees. Import fees and taxes on cars went up $1,800.00 this year alone!

NO< NO< NO!!! All of you are just dreaming. Under the new law an ECUADORIAN returning to Ecuador from a life abroad can bring ONE vehicle NOT MORE THAN ONE YEAR OLD into the country WITHOUT PAYING DUTY/TAXES on it. IF YOU ARE NOT A RETURNING ECUADORIAN, you can bring in vehicles, NOT MORE THAN ONE YEAR OLD, but must pay a tax about equal to the cost of the vehicle; so, importing a vehicle is not an option as you can buy them in Ecuador for eaqual or less than the combined purchase price plus the tax. THE ECUADORAIN GOVERNMENT IS NOT STUPID. You cannot beat them at this; so, apply your energy elsewhere.

hi - Im also looking at bringing a car into Ecuador. Does the 35k limit refer to the Purchase Price from country of origin or the Market Value of the car in Ecuador? Also, can you recommend any reference site to research vehicle import tax / Ecuador etc?
Many thanks - Barry
I would suggest you contact the Ecuadorean Embassy in your country, and/or do a google search to see where the closest embassy to you is located.

There are 22 pages of postings on this subject, but apparently you did not read any of them.

To make this simple for you, you can not import ANY used cars into Ecuador.

You can also visit any Ecuadorean embassy website and get more info, or read some of the previous posts.

I am thinking about relocating to Ecuador, and am interested in finding out about duty on my
household goods and hobby workshop--probably a container full.

There are many moving companies that can pickup your items at your house, store them for you free for 30 days, and then ship them to a port for loading on a container. You would have to have a huge amount of stuff to fill a container. I had 35 boxes, plus an 40' LCD TV. All of this was one pallet and it cost me $1,740.00 to ship to Ecuador. The 42,675.00 was based on 150 cubic feet of space in a container. Also keep in mind that you will have to pay a customs fee if your not a citizen of Ecuador.

Try to find a moving company that has connections for a moving company here that can handle your items in the container, can help you with customs, and can help you with the paperwork. I initially asked for bids from 5 different moving companies. The cheapest was Unity-Van Lines in Carlstadt, NJ, 800-554-9980, or www.unity-vanlines.com . I also went with them because they had an agent in Guayaquil. You need an agent here to deal with customs. Their agent was INSA. They were very helpful to me.

Also keep in mind that you can NOT import a used car into Ecuador.

Hope this help.

rick d,
Sorry I misquoted the price to ship via container. It was not $1,740.00, but
$2,740.00. this included picking up my stuff and storing it at their storage facility until loaded onto a container.

I do have enough stuff to fill a container, so is that the $42K price and how does Ecuador figure the duty on personal items?
