Very ambitious and foolish project.

No need to wonder why POVERTY continues unchecked.

A lot of that money will go to build beach houses.

This proposition has a very long term dateline from creation on paper to actual Maiden Voyage.

Many variables are under consideration: Surveying the area under planning,(Geologically and otherwise); Resource and material acquisition and management it's application; personal screening and hiring, engineering plan and approval.

I believe it can be a positive infrastructure venture of Dominican Republic and it's people.

Let's see. Time will tell.

This remind us the costly unnecessary elevated train built in Puerto Rico with federal funds, when a street level subway line would have sufficed. Lets hope that people with the knowhow get involved to avoid the fraud
defects of construction, soil cave ins, over passes too low that were the constant in the concrete/asphalt island.
If the government of the sister island consider all this errors of stupidity and greed, they will certainly have an efficient, mass transport system.

Man, another stupid little idea by the dominicans. They can't even provide adecuate electricity or potable water and the are thinking of building something so costly and extensive. Without the proper electricity (that they don't provide), how can they have effieciently running trains underground? All I can do is see this and laugh.

The Subway has it's own power plant, people don't realize the electricity used on subways and trains is not AC but DC, and it's produced in an entire different generator.

I lived in SD and let me tell you, this proyect is necessary, I pisses me off of people who've being to my country talking crap about what they don't know, the last administration expended 10 billion pesos on buses, guess what? they went into the pocket of goverment and union officials.

Have you ever being on a traffic jam going south Santo Domingo?, have you?

People who live north of the City have to wait until 10 or 11 PM to get home because the jam in the main road leading to Villa Mella is pack well into early morning, I have seen it, 12 AM and the highway still pack with people trying to get home from a job they got out of at 5 PM the day before.

And please, dont give me the usual oh the poor this or education that chiche crap, the US expends billions on military and trips to space while the educational amd health system ranks amongst the worst on the industrialized word.

There are sever traffic jams in this city. It is growing exponentially and I believe it is about the right time to build a metro. It's going to be just as stupid to have left this project for a time when transportation could get worse than it already is. Santo Domingo is actually one of the most congested cities in the world!!! Believe me I've experienced the traffic over there. The Metro isn't as expensive as some people have made it out to be (especially the speculative Dominican press). There is nothing extravagant about it, it's being built to do just what a Metro is supposed to do. And it is being built well. Just as the tunnels and elevated road ways were back in the late 1990's when Fernandez was president. And those projects were criticized for being dangerous and costly. But as it turns out none of the disasters some of the press predicted have happened. And it's one of the only things keeping the traffic from being any worse. For any of those who think that the health care system is suffering because the Metro is taking money away, a recent ranking of hospital systems has been released and the Dominican Republic has risen. The upper education system is being expanded and updated. There certainly is still a lot of work left to do, but one person isn't going to do it in an instant. It takes time and the DR has started to show some change.

Just remember that progress is something that has to be pushed or nothing would ever happen. For everyone that's hating that the Dominican Republic is thinking ahead for is prosperous future don't forget that infrastructure is needed for progress in every nation and civilization that has ever existed. China and India are a good example of what the Dominican President is trying to do for its people and that's trying to bring our people to the 21st century so that tomorrow our nation has a healthier more productive and educated population. This present government has been the only one in the last 50 years that has built more extensions of one of the best university in the island so that more people have a chance for a better education and built more infrastructure for water, housing, hospitals, schools, universities, roads, bridges and other vital government institutions so that the country can move forward to a brighter future. So stop hating and start appreciating. and this comment goes out for those poeple who I've notice here have nothing but hate and ill will for the country that I love dearly. Check the facts first before you make any comments in life, don't forget that we are all humans and want the same thing just like everyone around us. Karma baby!

I think a metro system is a good idea and is needed in the Capital of the Dominican Republic . A city with a growing urban population of 2.5+ million people, with vertical growth booming in the past 10 years, and good economic development, not to forget the Major Traffic jams in the Unplanned city-road grids.
I think is perfect that a metro system connects the North of the city with the Center of the city(the North holds over 500,000 inhabitants with only one main road connecting to the center of santo domingo, that one being the Avenue Hermanas Mirabal-Maximo Giomez which suffers from hour long traffic jams since the early 1990's).
Living in Villa Mella, and other northern portions of the city is catastrophic. Since the early 1990's the city has been growing northward but has been plagued by unplanned growth leaving the avenue of Hermanas Mirabal as the only exit or entrance to the main central part of the city since is divided by rivers.
The Line 1 of this metro system will help transport these workers from north to south in efficient way helping control congestion levels in the city and eliminating thousands of cheap taxis that congest and pollute the city.

Tatico Hernandez and other great performers of perico ripiao that you may check out in you tube.
Also Juan Luis Guerra, Mala Fe y Fulanito recommended to me by DL.

Why is the project foolish?

Can you... a Haitian who lives in the US tell us why is a system that will be used by the poor and working class a foolish endevour?

Building a subway in Haiti, now that's a stupid and almost impossible task.

DP. First of all, everything is not a DR vs. Haiti competition.I'm not one of those narow-minded, no-life having mothers' than you may know.

Second, that post was writen in october. Although I believe that progress should be made, however, the money can be spent on a myriad of other things(my opinion).
Lastly, since you had to call me out. I'm prety sure that you personaly have nothing on me.
I'm most likely wealthier, more educated and worldlier than your jibaro-ass.
Stay in your place!

Let me say I didn't ask you in a belligerent manner, I assumed you are biased because of your arguments with GW and Pepe32.

Second; I just asked you why is the project a foolish endeavor, I don’t’ think I insulted you, I just called you a ‘’Haitian who lives in the US’’, I take it that since you Haitians hate yourselves because you think the word Haitian is associated with poverty, blackness and anything that is unpleasant, maybe you find offense when someone calls you Haitian.

You can bet your bra cero-sugar-cane-cutter-ass I have nothing on you. I am Dominican, that means I am superior in any aspect, which includes being much-much better looking, not to mention better personal hygiene.

Wealthier; I don’t know, in the internet anyone can be drive a Ferrari.

Educated; again, I can’t tell, but just so you know, I am a network engineer with a master’s degree in computer science in Utah State University and I work for a very large corporation in NJ.
