It's ok to feel national and/or cultural pride and think that yours is the best. The problem comes when we start to grade everyone else. You can feel that ur the best withou putting others down. I'm PR from Newark and I'm personally glad to see PRs leaving Newark for the sole reason that it makes way for other groups of immigrants. It also shows that we are moving up. Which should be the natural course of immigration. I am an attorney and I have a huge network of PR friends that are professionals. I am very very fair-skinned and While i am very proud to be PR, I don't walk around with flags all over me or my car. So when u see me going to work most think, "there's a hard working guy going to work" not "there's a hardworking PR..." I, like many of my PR network, are "first generation" born stateside and we already are homeowners, own businesses, have advanced degrees. My friends and I don't get the attention. Sadly, it's the lost souls that get all the attention. Of course, it's the lost souls that plaster the flag all over them. They are the worst representation of us because they don't know the real culture, traditions, and work ethic, yes work ethic! No immigrant group before us achieved better success in just one generation. It cannot be denied that PRs have opened the door to other immigrant Latino groups in NY/NJ area (just like Cubans in FL and Mexicans in TX & CA). Our accomplishments don't make us "better" it just means that we are a bit further along bc of a head start. It does sadden me when some non-PR Latinos get their start bc of a PR, but then they stab that person in the back. This shows lack of loyalty and I am sad to say that I see this a lot! There is nothing With acknowledging hose who gave you a start, regardless of that person's background.

I can vouche for the fact that there are many professional Puerto Ricans who go about their daily lives without a lot of fanfare, as they tend to be low-key and unobtrusive. As you stated, the low-level often impoverished Puerto Ricans, most on some type of public assistance, are the ones flaunting their PR pride and really have nothing to be proud of except their flags. IMO

My stepmother is from PR. She always sais that puerto rican is hatin on the dominicans because Dominican had the " cojones" to become independence from French Spain and unite states. And puerto ricans couldn't. That puerto ricans know they are the back yard of unite states but they don't admitted. I live in Oregon US I used to love in south Bronx NYC before. All u see there is puerto ricans drug addict. Drug dealin at every hour of the day. Rape, assault am sure there is a lot of good puerto rican people out there. About Dominicans I don't have nothin to say its true there is a lot of poor people in the country but in my believe is not there fault. The president is a pieace of $***. But Dominican are good people. Am a 21 years old girl am a realistic person an from what I have read here lot of you need to grow up mentallic an stop hatin others we all humans. Im puerto rican but I have no problem with dominicans there is a good and bad side to every race PR and DR are waaay to close to act so far apart.
