It's ok to feel national and/or cultural pride and think that yours is the best. The problem comes when we start to grade everyone else. You can feel that ur the best withou putting others down. I'm PR from Newark and I'm personally glad to see PRs leaving Newark for the sole reason that it makes way for other groups of immigrants. It also shows that we are moving up. Which should be the natural course of immigration. I am an attorney and I have a huge network of PR friends that are professionals. I am very very fair-skinned and While i am very proud to be PR, I don't walk around with flags all over me or my car. So when u see me going to work most think, "there's a hard working guy going to work" not "there's a hardworking PR..." I, like many of my PR network, are "first generation" born stateside and we already are homeowners, own businesses, have advanced degrees. My friends and I don't get the attention. Sadly, it's the lost souls that get all the attention. Of course, it's the lost souls that plaster the flag all over them. They are the worst representation of us because they don't know the real culture, traditions, and work ethic, yes work ethic! No immigrant group before us achieved better success in just one generation. It cannot be denied that PRs have opened the door to other immigrant Latino groups in NY/NJ area (just like Cubans in FL and Mexicans in TX & CA). Our accomplishments don't make us "better" it just means that we are a bit further along bc of a head start. It does sadden me when some non-PR Latinos get their start bc of a PR, but then they stab that person in the back. This shows lack of loyalty and I am sad to say that I see this a lot! There is nothing With acknowledging hose who gave you a start, regardless of that person's background.

I can vouche for the fact that there are many professional Puerto Ricans who go about their daily lives without a lot of fanfare, as they tend to be low-key and unobtrusive. As you stated, the low-level often impoverished Puerto Ricans, most on some type of public assistance, are the ones flaunting their PR pride and really have nothing to be proud of except their flags. IMO

My stepmother is from PR. She always sais that puerto rican is hatin on the dominicans because Dominican had the " cojones" to become independence from French Spain and unite states. And puerto ricans couldn't. That puerto ricans know they are the back yard of unite states but they don't admitted. I live in Oregon US I used to love in south Bronx NYC before. All u see there is puerto ricans drug addict. Drug dealin at every hour of the day. Rape, assault am sure there is a lot of good puerto rican people out there. About Dominicans I don't have nothin to say its true there is a lot of poor people in the country but in my believe is not there fault. The president is a pieace of $***. But Dominican are good people. Am a 21 years old girl am a realistic person an from what I have read here lot of you need to grow up mentallic an stop hatin others we all humans. Am Jews an Jews people we did suffer a lot in the Past an some still are. So please grow up. An stop hatin each other we have enough struggle in life to deal with more. We don't want another hitler era again. God still luckin at u one day u gonna be in his court. An his gonna be ur witness an ur judge.

Listen everyone! The reason why puertoricans don't like Dominicans is because us puertoricans get more attention from the music industry, beautiful woman and men, famous celebrities, etc. I work with a Dominican chic that swears she's all that and really the chic is busted! I have an hour glass shape and good hair and pretty in the face , so I'm not going to lie I do get attention naturally. From my 29 years of life I always noticed that Dominicans try to act like they are better than someone and their not! I'm not friendly with the girl at work and she got an attitude with me all the time and she does not want it with me trust me! They don't like us but always trying to be like us or sleep with us. Look at the PR parade in NYC and then look at the DR parade so ha! And just for the record my family had bodegas and liquor stores and we are not Dominican we just moved on to big and better things
Hahahaha am a Jews girl and I used to lived in a PRican neighborhood in south Bronx ny. An believe me sweet heart you guys are not famouse for all of that. Drug dealin, drug addicts, gangbangers, assault rape murder. Thats wat make puerto rico famouse. The only reason you guys act all that is because you guys are US citizen. At least Dominican is a independen country and they have a flag. Ok you have a flag too but we all know your true flag is the USA one. Puerto Rico has 100 yrs tryin to be independence and USA not gonna make that happend, can you guys vote in federal elections........ Lol NOPE!!!

Am really really into history I love history. And I have heard alot of puerto ricans sayin that they are 100% puerto ricans. But Dominican people are migration to puerto rico since 1910.... Right now we are in 2012. Let's be realisti, dominican havin kids with puerto ricans women. Puerto rican women's havin kids with Dominican men since 1910 ultil now 2012. There is mix of nationality. Before you come here talkin shit about others check your backgrown if you puero rican who hate Dominican check you background u never know if you come from a Dominican family. So that doesn't make you 100% p.rican. Most of the famouse hollywwod actress are half dominican and puerto rican. Like michel rodriguez, zoe zaldana, this spanish rapper vico c, nicky jam. And there is a lot of more. So Like I said before am a Jews girl. Hitler killed 8 millions of Jews people maybe more. But lot of people don't know that hitler was half Jews also.

Im puerto rican but I have no problem with dominicans there is a good and bad side to every race PR and DR are waaay to close to act so far apart. We talk somewhat alike some of us look alike and sometimes act alike. Were all hispanic y can't we get along?? I'm from nyc and this DR vs.PR crap happens a lot but no one cares bc in the end I've met more half DR and half PRs then I've met of each race alone. Stop being ignorant if someone does something blame it on the type of person they are not their race.

iknow a lot of dominicns that hate the fact that pr is part of u.s and hate them about it just like pricans hates the fact that dominicans are getting almost the same treatment in u.s while they talk shit about americans, im a rican and my friends are all pricans or dominicans. even my friends say that they somewhat jealous of our citizenship thats why there is over 200,000 dominicans in p.r and only 68,000 with papers. so tu suegra needs to shut that osico cuz prico voted statehood instead of independence why bcuz we are protected and we have alot of benefits okay we have more cojones than all of yall so no vengas con esa mierda ok, thats why dr is soo dead bcuz u guys are soo orgullos that wont take help from another country you guys are so ignorant. ohhh n remember yall won against haiti pls me and my mama can go to war with haiti and win lol like really? thats how yall got that title independent!

hey erica you r so right about the history lesson, through out the history of pr and dr there has been constant migration btwn both islands for over 400 yrs! and just to think that today PR because they belong to the USA and feel superior to dominicans treat dominicans as second class citizens in pr and in some cases when they know that a person is not legal they call immigration, i can't blame dominicans that have migrated to pr for a better life, at the end of the day all they are really chasing is the mighty dollar! but lets think for a while lets say the USA were to make DR a colony like PR, the result would be that we would totally out shine you guys, i mean think about it. almost all great things that PR has been responsible for thru out the last 70 yrs, there's been a dominican inolved or outshining you. we make better ball players, the salsa movement for which you guys are so popular for would have never taken off without the master mind of the FANIA ALLSTARS MR JOHNNY PACHECO who named HECTOR LAVOE! lets not forget the guy who made MARC ANTHONY and LA INDIA MR RALPHY MERCADO also dominican! oh and let us not forget that the number puerto rican crooner of the 1950's and 60's mr TITO RODRIGUEZ was born and raised in pr but was born to Dominican Father and a Cuban mother. the reggeaton movement of the last 12 years also dominicans at the forfront, the super producers responsible for the contageous sound were also dominican Looney Toones without them you guys wouldn't have the music. the point is the more you read about your history you will realize that we are the same ppl CUBANS DOMINICANS and PUERTO RICANS all have african taino and spanish blood no matter how black white or in btwn you look evry black dominican i know has a cousin thats white and evry light skin dominican i know has a dark cousin we are all mixed and we are all cousins, back in the days our ancestors would have up to 15 kids per family the male children would grow up and move to other places and regions of the spanish empire and start families and never return, this went on for hundreds of years btwn the three spanish speaking islands i love all latin ppl but i defend my dr when it's under fire!

Yes actually there are. R.D and P.R have always had a history of immigration among each other beginning in the 1900s when Puerto Rico faired worst than all Caribbean countries (except Haiti), many Puerto Ricans found asylum in northern Dominican Towns like San Juan, Moca and Santiago de los Caballeros. Today many of the decedents of the Puerto Rican refugees don't know that they are part Puerto Rican.

After the 1960s though the patterns reversed. Actually most Dominicans fleeing the country between (1961-1980) where political refugees while from 1980 onwards most left due to economic reasons.

Im Puerto Rican and Dominican i gotta tell you that salsa movement was because of the Boricuas and Dominicans what made johnny pacheco big was the salsa singers and also luny tunes had to learn to do those stuff from this guy name dj nelson look at there interview with don francisco on utube.the hip hop and dembow that dominicans do recently is because of guys like vico c with hip hop first latino to do it and dj playero(underground-dembow).by the way for those who have said PR sold there territory but it says on the wiki that president baez in 1869 sold his land to u.s.Puerto Rico was colonized by U.S so ill say its a tie between the both.
