Cyprus Mail article on a movement in Larnaca to remove lights and benches where immigrants meet on their days off in an effort to force these immigrants to integrate. Every corner of the world has experienced this phenomenon where new immigrants search for people within their own background and ethnicity to help them cope with relocation and foreign countries. Even in New York and Chicago, the Italians had their own little communities. What makes New York great and cosmopolitan are the different ethnic communities like little Italy, Chinatown and of course Astoria, home to our favorite son, Gat. Why are the Cypriots so xenophobic and why try to isolate people and make their lives more difficult? Everybody needs a familiar face or a comfort zone in their lives and these immigrants are no exemption. Why are the Cypriots feeling threatened when these people get together to socialize on their day off?Down't London offer this opportunity to the Cypriots. I heard there are more Cypriots in England than Cyprus. Get it through your heads, you xenophobic fools. If people are happy and respected they will make better citizens and make your communities safer. A loner and depressed immigrant will become a threat

The post is about immigrants and their rights. They are in your country to work and they should have the right to socialize and spend their free time they way they choose to. The same way you guys enjoy your little communities abroad, every other human should have the same right. You spend so much time bragging about your heritage, why shouldn't others be proud of theirs? Why force people to integrate with the Cypriots if they don't want to? I rode the buses in Cyprus and was shocked at how the bus drivers only talk to the tourists in Greek and they get rude and angry when the tourists do not understand. How stupid is it to expect the tourists to learn the language of every country they visit, to be able to get around? Certainly in Cyprus an ex-British colony. Why is it so important for the Cypriots that all foreigners integrate in the Cypriot society? You people, do not like foreigners, beat them up, threaten them, tell them to get the hell out of Cyprus and insult them every way possible. Even when they can legally file for citizenship, the immigration dept will deny it and in many instances throw those people in prison. In other words, you don't like them, but still want them to distant themselves from their own kind and culture to please you? I always said it and I repeat it again. Freedom and respect make a country richer and healthier. A happy immigrant is a healthy individual that makes a community safer. Hatred provokes hatred and hurts everybody. Please answer to this subject and no more advertising for how wonderful Cyprus is. Irrelevant to the post.

People can get some emotional support by comparing notes and exchanging information. Some older people may not be confident about learning another language and may not be interested in broadening their horizons. On the other hand, it is good for foreigners and for society if there is some integration. I once knew a girl who had Italian parents. She told me she did not learn to speak English until she started school because her parents spoke to her in Italian - this was in the days when children do not usually attend a playgroup or nursery. This kind of situation is not good. If one child starts school and they cannot speak the language it is not the end of world; in my town a couple of foreign children started attending a local school and the teachers managed - the children could not be expected to speak English right away as they were newly arrived. However, if you have large numbers of children who cannot speak the language, this can put pressure on resources - so I think people who have children should make a real effort to learn the language.

This reminds me of once when I was in Germany. I was able to ask for an ice-cream in German but I did not understand the question the ice cream seller put to me, so she spoke to me in a very rude tone.

I agree with your points. In this case, I am sure the people sitting in the benches and socializing with their own must be adults spending time with familiar faces and discussing back home news. We are all entitled to gatherings of our own choosing, being religious, party meetings, teenager get togethers etc. To faciliatate integration, the cities can help by being more hospitable and friendlier to new comers and putting programs in place to entice young people. Policing and forcing them is disprespectful and can backfire. It is also true that children adapt easier than adults to a new language and new way of life. Special programs can be very helpful and children of both sides can benefit.

If your economy depends on tourism or want tourism in your country, accommodating them should be a priority. As far as the immigrants are concerned, the issue is not their job or their language, is their freedom to gather in a public place. Any opinion on that one?

And you know what I'm convinced this post of yours is just another way of trying to make the greek cypriots "accept" the turkish invaders and occupiers of her country and homes. Your trying every way possible and it just will not be that way. This forum is on the island of Cyprus. This country, like any other country has social, economic, political, health, educational and many other issues to improve, to praise and discuss and debate. How do Cyprus, Cypriots and outsiders view these issues and howis the country dealing with them? All contributors should be welcomed because all of us have different experiences. Some live there, some visit Cyprus annually and some know about Cyprus from what they read in the papers. There is only one Cyprus but many multi-ethnic inhabitants and many others who wish to inform themselves and know more about it for different reasons. Some, might even be political science majors and specialize in the politics of the region. All debates are controversial and not a single opinion is more valid than the other. The people with more inside of the issues are really the people who live in Cyprus. Being of Greek or Cypriot origin doesn't increase anybody's chances of being right or a better debator. Knowledge of the subject is the only essential requirement in this discussion.
