Spartan education of their future warrior citizens and of the females who would marry them and breed another generation was intended to perpetuate the societal structure laid down under the Codes of Lykourgus , in the period that is commonly discussed as representing Sparta , the period of the Persian War .
It was a brutal mental and physical conditioning of adolescents that today would be condemned as child abuse and it produced young adults as warped as the average SS Trooper .

Because of the actions of Leonidas and his 300 at Thermopylae , that treatment of their young people is accounted a " Good Thing " and somehow admirable .
But then there are people nowadays who admire the fanatics of the German SS too .

As for Athens , a small number among the Elite of the Citizens ( NOT many people who lived and worked in Athens WERE full citizens ) this tiny group did get a variety of educations which sometimes included the Arts . Most did not , and most of the population received only basic education , if they got any at all .

the myth that Athens was some sort of ideal city of white marble in which people wandered about in flimsy white robes declaiming poetry and mathematical theorems to each other .
UTTER BUNKUM .
The Athens of antiquity was mostly a smelly , disease ridden slum , and most of the people in it led short and brutal lives in conditions of squalor .

And what were you Mongols up to in the same era? let me guess, you were living on the plains in scattered little clans eating each other in Winter.

i dont know where you learn history ,about the life in ancient Athens .was not a perfect society but better the most in that era.dont forget Athens had elected geverment no one else had that ,police for law and order ,polis is the city in Greek .bank safe boxes on the Acropolis where you hide all your gold ,guarded 24/7,theaters,bath houses get lay places.no TV or cars ,slaves ? yes everybody had them that time ,why Athens should not.now the Spartans opposite millitary nation ,men exersise all day and women and older men took care the farms ,now what is wrong what that too?they had the most best train and equiped army in that time and the time before the gun powder appear/.
