The 78th anniversary of the Turkish women’s suffrage is being marked with various events. Attending the events, Minister of Labour and Social Security Serife Ünverdi expressed the need for the women to take part more in politics and administrative positions.
Turkish women were granted the right to vote and to be elected first in local elections in 1930, then in national elections in 1934 following a series of reforms undertaken by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his colleagues to build a modern state in Turkey.
On the occasion, a series of events are being held in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus today.
Women’s’ Associations laid wreaths in front of the Atatürk Monument and at the Dr. Fazil Küçük Monument in Lefkosa as well as in front of the bust of Zübeyde Hanim, the mother of Atatürk.
Also attending the events, the Minister of Labour and Social Security Serife Ünverdi reminded that the Turkish women were granted suffrage before many European and modern countries thanks to the great leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
Noting that the Cyprus Turkish women have succeeded in many fields including politics, economy, art and culture,Ünverdi expressed the need for the women to take more part in politics and administrative positions.
