Book Review: Closed for Repairs , by Nancy Alonso; translated ...

Cuba most readily elicits images of sun-drenched tourist destinations at affordable prices, Cuban cigars, Castro and communism.

No doubt that this book will be banned from all the Dade County Florida libaries and public schools. How dare anyone challenge the lopsided, myopic, narrow, hate-filled views coming out of Miami. Burn the book! Down with freedom of the press if it dares give a differnt view than that of the Miami mafia.

I have critized Cuba for its lack of freedom of information and its censorship of books. This is my country and to see Cuban Americans doing the same as the Cuban gov't regarding censorship seems to be both tragic and hypocritical. There are several instances of this form of censorship in Miami/Dade due to the fact that the book or magazine was not in line with the radical rightwing Cuban Americans - the magazine "Cigar Afecianado" published an issue which centered on Cuba and U.S. realations. It was banned in Miami and at the Miami airport. A lawsuit was filed and it forced the radicals of Miami to back down. This should never happen in the U.S. just because some disagree with its thesis or content.

I hate to agree with you, i was never in favor of what was going on with the book Vamos a Cuba, Finnaly the book is still at Miami dade Libraries. But in Cuba is the Goverment who bann books and give their citizens jail time if they are in possesion of any of those books. It is a BIG DIFFERENCE.

It is true that you had done a few little critics to the cASStro's dictatorship censorship in the past and that you have all the rights in the world to critize any group or people that try to do any type of censorship in the US or in any other country; I even agree on that with you.So that is why I don't understand your wishes that Raul takes Cuba to a system that resemble the Chinese system! As long as I know there is no free press in China and if there is no free press then they do censorship in China..right "Curious George"?You see these type of incongruencies in your point of views ,is what make me feel some times suspicious about your true beliefs!Do you undertand my concerns?I will appreciate your comments about my concerns!

I did not say I "approved" such as the Chinese model - I said I saw Cuba potentially moving in that direction - at least it would be a move toward better material gains for the people of
Cuba to bring a more free-enterprise oriented economic system. Cubans are very differnt than the Chinese and such a move might be the beginning of an even more complete transition inside Cuba because of it.(I would never imagine, if ordered to do so, Cuban soldiers firing into a crowd of Cuban students.) If this Chinese model of economics is installed - in may very well be the beginning of a new day in Cuba even in the political realm. Cubans in Cuba are smart and very, very patient!!!

While teaching at a Cuban university in the fall of 1995 I warned my class about the evident movement of the Cuban gov't toward the Chinese with the loss of the Soviet support. I told them about what transpired years earlier in China during the well known student rebellion and how hundreds of innocent students were murdered by the Chinese army to put down the rebellion. I showed them photos of what happended and the 'Lady Liberty' statue the students had constructed in front of the giant picture of Mao.
I knew then that Cuba was moving in this direction but Fidel was against it as he sees it as polluting the purity of the revolution - Raul is not! This doctrine is called "the tropicalization of the China model"! The statements I made to my class were reported to university officials and I was critized for making counter-revolutionary statements.

Again, this is a complex issue with no simple solutions but the very real prospects of a horrible tragedy if not approached minus the hate and desire to "get even" with the regime and its supporters.

Perhaps you didn't say that you"aproved" the Chinese model..but you praises this system a lot!Even in this post(The one I'm responding now) you are doing so!Your problem is that you are always very ambiguous in your posts and/or responses. You see If we take the "Tropicalization" of the Chinese model road we will still be living under censorhip and dictatorship! The "Tropicalization" of the Chinese model will only bring "free" enterprise and a twisted savage "Capitalism" without rules(This type of "Capitalism" is already taking place in today's Cuba),without labor unions or workers rights and with no liberties or respect for human rights. So we will be going back in time for more than 48 years to a new Batista dictatorship but this time a leftist dictatorship! That would mean that we had lost 48 plus years of our lives and of our country live! Not much of a gain..don't you believe?
