I think fundamentally its still a slightly backward country wanting to feel better than some people. Top tip dont check out the San Jose carnival its awful and embarrasing go to Limon instead, way cooler.
Last i check neither the US nor the UK treated black people kindly back in the 40's smart one. I believe in latin america fair skn s white..and LOL in the US black people call themselves the 'N' word all the time but yo have to rememeber that 'negro' isnt derogatory, just ask anyone from spain.

To Natalie from Manchester UK First of all despite what you might think the sun never set on a once spanish empire numero uno two costa rica is rated on the high list of places to visit higher than england. As for food? Its common knowledge that brits eat the most bland crap tasting food there is! And i will take the costa rican mtns over your London fog and over cast anyday of the week! Costa rica is like the carrabean on the east coast of the country. Get over it alot of people dont accept gringo's and negro's dating marrying in UK or USA not just Costa Rica! Try italy and see what you find idiot! CIAO BELLA COSTA RICA!!!!

I like to travel and can afford to do so. For certain, Costa Rica will not be on my list of places to visit since they look down on black people. I refuse to spend money to go to a place where I will be disrespected.
I Just wanted to let you know that I lived in CR as a missionary kid for 7 years, I did not experience or see anything of the sort in this beautiful country, Ticos are warm and friendly they love their country and have so much pride in it. Just remember its the happiest country in the world according to world research, also they have no army, and are protected by USA. Also Americans make up a huge part of their economy in tourism.
They love the USA, and this is the first time I've ever seen a post about racism in Costa Rica.

I'm Japanese and recently went to CR. I experienced a lot of racism, as well as sexism anywhere I go. They would call me Chinese, sometimes as a joke, but sometimes with a seemingly - hatred and hostility. People seem to have no embarrassment or hesitation in calling asians that way. I never liked it because well I am not Chinese, and they don't care of course!

.A lot of Costa Ricans have English last names. Most countries with some of the population having European looks have racist beliefs stemming from colonial times.

Racism is everywhere...in every country. But to stereotype an entire group, "Costa Ricans Are Racists" is silly and not logical. Really...every single Costa Rican is racist? It's also just as silly to say, "Costarricense's are not racists" because it's the same silly principle...lumping an entire population into one category.

In every country there are people who exist that can be deemed racists and those that are not. No matter where you go you can never say that ALL people are...

I find any kind of racism disgusting and to exist with those that still need to catch up and evolve.

Costa Ricans are very racist. I am a White blond blue eyed north american 25% hispanic cuban, perfect spanish. I get spit at, coughed at and have fingers shot at me an average of 20 times per day. I feel that the Costa Rican people are the most racist people that i have ever seen.

Oh and I forgot to mention. I think that up to 3/4 of the population is racist not all against White people I think about 1/2 the people have hatred and resentment against me as a White european/north american and about the same number against black people or more. the Nicas get the most abuse at about 90% hatred. Watch carefully
a Nica with a heavy Nicaraguan accent will not speak around a Tico. Obama would have gotten 30% of the vote here and could never win the prsidency of Costa Rica. I would say that racism in CR is rampant and out of control and something needs to be done about it. It must come from both the schools and the homes. Costa Rica a peaceful nation that is a joke. Racism this rampant does not mean peace, it means war and that it what is going on here an unstated social war against minorities and we are getting very verbal on this point and are trying to organize a discrimination lawsuit in general against the country

First of all the term "gringo," is racist. It's like calling a Mexican a wet back. From someone who is a US citizen and has lived in CR for five years...they dislike Americans. Companies will tell you because you are not native Costa Rican, that they wont hire you in violation of their own laws. If you a tourist with a pocket full of cash..yes they will be nice to you.

There isnt much racism in the Black culture or the large gay community. They just dont like Americans or individuals from Nicuragua. Anyone who from the States who's thinking about retiring here...I'd say pick another option. Ive lived here for five years and it's been a nightmare.

Costa Ricans are racist..Ive lived here for five years. So the occasional tourist to even post is crazy. You fly in with a pocket full of cash and they will "scrape and bow." You live here and you will find out how they are. They dont like Americans period.

I would say that the racism started recently in Costa Rica--that is against tourists or White euro
types. Maybe 10-15 years ago. Now it is escalating badly and probably 50% of the crimes against tourists and foreign residents are at least partially racially motivated but many completely so.

Almost no crimes against foreigners are investigated. I have been the victim of 3 serious crimes in the last 5 years and am lucky to be alive
none of these very serious crimes was ever investigated. 1 resulted in one 15 min. visit by a detective the other 2 had not even a visit or call from any authority figure.

These crimes if committed against a Costa Rican would have at least been investigated. This is fact because crimes are committed against Ticos and they are investigated I have many Tico acquaintances.

SO THIS FAILURE TO INVESTIGATE IS OBVIOUSLY RACISM.

Now I know some Tico will respond well they dont investigate crimes against us and thats true SOMETIMES but
not every crime except maybe a few murders. THEY HAVE NEVER INVESTIGATED ANY CRIME AGAINST ANY OF MY FOREIGN FRIENDS.

THE RACISM HERE IS SOME OF THE WORST IN THE WORLD AND EVER IN HISTORY its that bad.
