Wonderchild -

I do not know what type of implant Dr Anglada used at the time of your original placements but do know that he now uses Biomet 3i & they are definitely not substandard. Also, implant abutements are not interchangeable, so Dr Cavallini had to use the same brand when he corrected the problem. Why Anglada didn't see you as you expected (and I would if I had scheduled an appointment w/ him aside from the scheduled cleaning) you could only learn from him & although you decided not to, I would have pursued it. Still I don't understand how the "work was completely redone" if the implant was still intact & only the abutement was broke. I'd understood that you also had more than 1 implant w/ Dr Anglada. You are certainly correct, there are many more variables than most people realize. I only saw Dr Anglada when Dr Castro had him look at my jaw xrays where there was significant bone loss from poor placement in the U S of an implant bridge. But since there are those that I personally contacted who are still happy 7 - 10 years later w/ both implants & cosmetics, I don't think they could be using "faulty & unacceptable materials". In my experience, Dr Castro & his assistant were meticulous in checking the occlusion of my crowns & veneers, so I am hoping that I won't have any similar issues, esp since I made a point of asking Dr Castro about proper care (as well as independent research). Good luck w/ your new work from Drs Cavallini.

Bob -

Since you are paid by certain dental clinics for referrals: "I am with Costa Rican Dental – http://www.costaricandental.com We are a free stateside referral service for dental clinics in Costa Rica. We are unique in that we work with 5 select dental clinics in Costa Rica." I wonder, do or did you ever have either Drs Anglada or Cavallini in your service? PS - Aren't answers what we are all looking for on this forum..."or to have to endlessly answer questions on The Forum."

Linda J,

The focus of the thread is -

1. Do I think Wonderchild had work done by Dr. Anglada? Yes
2. Do I think that she had the problems mentioned? Yes
3. Do I think that Dr. Anglada was less than helpful in assisting Wonderchild with her problem? Yes

I only came forth because once again, someone mentioning a problem, was coming under attack. In this case, unlike a few others, I felt the comments were legitimate.

We are not getting the neg on this Forum because anytime anyone mentioning anything neg all sorts of things happen.

I will amend my statement. I stated "several" people have had problems with Anglada. I did exaggerate. In fact I am only aware of 2 others. However, in both cases the pattern was exactly the same. A former patient had a problem and Dr. Anglada was less than sympathetic.

You can believe otherwise is you like.

I agree that Wonderchild had a problem w/ her results and was angry that she did not see Dr Anglada as she expected. I said that I would feel the same if I had a specific appointment & did not see the person. In fact, I would have been even more vocal. YOU are the one who said you worked FOR specific Dental Clinics. Also, YOU were the one who implied that you knew of several others who also had problems. Since you work FOR certain Dental Clinics, I thought it was perfectly fair to inquire if you worked either for Anglada or Cavallini since you'd also previously asked specific questions regarding a comparison of the two. I have NO problem answering any question about my treatment & would feel free to state my case if there was an issue. I have had a bad experience w/ a Dentist in the US & made my self very clear to the Dentist, the Dental Insurer and others who considered their service. I am ALL for people explaining specifically what happened and/or where they got their info. I was NOT the only person confused by Wonderchilds original post, as you must have observed. AND the focus of this thread is information on Dentists in Costa Rica were honesty would have had you say you'd heard(?) of ONE person who had an issue similar to Wonderchilds.

Bob - My background involved noticing things & asking lots of questions - so that is what I do. Hopefully some of that helped when I posted information on caring for new porcelain crowns / veneers. I don't see asking questions & for clarification as an attack. I don't see providing an opposing view of someone who I had a personal experience with & who is not available to defend themself as an attack on the person who had an issue with them. I see specific accusations of lying directed at a poster expressing their personal experience as an attack.(I've seen that here). I did not do that. I see making a false or exaggerated claim against someone as an attack.

You should really call Dr. Alonso Balmaceda. He is located in Jaco and is amazing. I have had multiple procedures done with him. He alway is honest and won't take advantage of you and plus he is located in Jaco. Right on the beach. Give him a (506) 2643-4039

hi all... i just got home from costa rica yesterday... i really do not have one single negative about the whole experience... i used dr. anglada and felt totally comfortable with him and his office staff... i had ample time and opportunity to ask any questions and felt like he gave me a totally honest picture of the pros and cons of various options i had... he did eight implants, several extractions and a couple of other things... i did not do the iv sedation, and still found the procedure pain free... he did the surgery on monday afternoon... monday evening, i was tired, had no pain, but really just wanted to sleep... tuesday, i had to force myself to lie around and not do much... i felt up to doing anything i wanted, and by thursday i was off on the nine hour tour to poas and la paz... i'm very glad i went this route and look forward to getting back there in a few months for the next stage... the country is beautiful, the people are gracious and friendly and even in san jose, i never felt unsafe or in any way limited in walking around, outside of taking the customary precautions that i would take in any city... (not going down empty streets at night, etc)

Last fall, here in So Calif, my wife found out all her teeth needed to be pulled and replaced. We had 3 different dentist's opinions. Estimates for extractions, posts and replacements was $50-$70K!!!!!!
We did a lot of research, part of which was this forum, and decided on Dr Cavallini. It took 2- two week visits. She stayed at his in house hotel and they picked her up and took her back to the airport. and she went by herself. Dr Cavallini did an incredible job. Virtually no pain. My wife thought he was the best dentist she had ever been to in her 50+ years! The best part was we did all this, including some bone grafts, airfare, hotel and spending money for less the $15K. This is an honest post and we are in no way being compensated by posting this. You would be CRAZY to do a big job like this in the states unless you have some AMAZING insurance!!!!

Needwork -

Depending on your insurance, you can be reimbursed "out-of-network" cost for the work done in Costa Rica. Granted the payback is small because the original cost is also small!

Vicki - Glad everything went so well. I do agree you have to speak up & ask specific questions, hoepfully based on your own research. I contacted several dentists before I chose Dr. Castro & I noticed that most seemed to assume I would want Zirconia crowns (even when I specified a request for the cost of PFM)- but since I have poor occlusion & am a clencher/grinder, I'd already decided on the porcelain over metal. I also loved the Country & people in the stores, restaurants & cabdrivers were all friendly & helpful. Hope your 'view' during surgery was pleasing - or did you watch a movie?

To Needwork: we too found that Drs. Cavallinni really stepped up to the plate when I needed the repair work done from Dr.Anglada and Castro. I was honest with him about my previous work done in Costa Rica and he thought about it, created a plan and started the work with me that afternoon. Amazing, kind, understanding and proficient and ethical. Would I recommend Drs. Cavallinni again? Yes. You made a good choice.

pinoux -

You might also want to start @ the beginning of the thread (2007) & review info / look for email addresses from those who used the Dentist you are interested in. And ask them if they have email addresses from others. It's probably best to get multiple opinions, from varying time frames. Not all people are happy w/ their choice as you will see, regardless of who they chose. You simply have to weigh the overall responses. I contacted between 15 - 20 people before I chose Dr Castro. I am sure you will find ample email information for contacts as you go.

I have been reading this forum for some time now and i'm deciding between Anglada and Cavalini. I know Anglada isn't the cheapest but he is one of the best according to this forum. I read a lot of good things and very little bad things about both dentists. One complaint I saw about Cavalini was that his waiting room is always full and patients wait for sometimes hours before there called which everyone seems to except. I'm not surprised he's that busy because of his prices, there very reasonable although I don't know what materials he's using. I do know Anglada uses biocare something which is a good known brand.
What puzzles me is I read on 2 occassions how Cavalini stepped up to the plate and corrected Castros work the same afternoon but if he's so busy and backed up for sometimes hours, how did he do it the same afternoon with a roomful of patients already waiting?
Another post I read was a patient went to ask about more implants and came back to there room 45 minutes later with the work done? He was able to do it immediatly? When he is so busy? Am I missing something here? I'm trying to decide who to use but this puzzles me? Is all that made up? Do those people work for the dentists? It sounds like they do because there stories sound far fetched.
Any opinions?

Hi Bob B,

Welcome to the forum. I spent a little over a week in Dr. Cavallini's office about a month ago. Yes it is packed, yes sometimes you will wait a long time. They seem to have an interesting way of prioritizing different needs including urgency of problem and for us gringos when are you flying back home ; ) It seems to work most of the time. I saw one gentleman from South Carolina who they missed a color match on one cap and had to redo at the very last minute as he was flying out the next morning. They were still working on him at 7:00 pm Friday evening, not sure if he left with the permanent or a temp. It's sometimes chaotic but it seems to work. I could see them stepping up to help someone in need out. That all being said I am happy with the work that was done but I feel it's still to early in the process to champion any one. I met with quite a few dentist on a previous scouting trip to C.R. including Anglada and was over all fairly impressed with most of them. I weighed a lot of variables in making my choice. Always do your research and take the post in this forum with a grain of salt, I do think there are some shills posting.

I am not sure how Marco Cavallini (and his son Marco Peralta) schedule their clients ... they are busy indeed (good prices for quality services provided equals a good number of customers). I think that they try their best to stick to their schedules, but if emergencies pop up then they deal with those as higher priorities, while still taking care of the regularly sheduled clients, but with a longer wait time. They do have a neat type of "Maro Motel" ... brand new motel rooms right above the clinic that clients can reserve a nice room for the duration of their stay and just hang around upstairs that also has a lounging area, and then the dental offices rings up your room when it's your turn and you go down into "the chair" for your work ... this way if you get stressed out by having to wait longer than expected you can book a room to go along with your work and then you'll be living on "Tico Time". My brother and his wife stayed at Marco Motel last November (and had work done by Cavalini and Son) and really liked it.

Cavallini and associates did extensive work on me (29 teeth) about a year ago and all is well. It was worth the wait for me.

Thought I jump in with my 2 cents given all the recent back and forth, claims and counter claims concerning Anglada and Cavallini. I find it extremely hard to believe, based on our experience, that Anglada or Castro would ignore a patient who had problems with one or more of their implants or crowns given our experience with Anglada/Castro. On our recent 2nd trip (5 more implantsn, temps and veneers for me after my initial grafts healed and final crowns for my wife with Dr. Castro), Despite Anglada being busy, he always took time to seek us out and greet us, check on our progress and well being, join Dr. Castro to consult on my wife’s particular problem with a couple of her existing teeth and was generally always available for appointments (not immediately) to answer any follow-up questions we had. Like Linda, I’m curious as to why Wonderchild didn’t press the issue with Anglada and/or Castro, demand a consultation and hold them accountable, if in fact he was. My wife was very unhappy with one of Castro’s crowns but he and his staff worked very late one night and came into the office in the morning to fix her crown, all prior to his noon flight to Florida for a conference. You don’t get better treatment than that.

That said, there are always two sides to every story with truth in both sides. But we’re only getting one side on these postings and we’ll never get a hint at what the poster may or may not have done to contribute to their problem or what part their own body may have played and/or contributing actions that were just a continuation of a lifetime of bad oral hygiene care and/or habits which is why most of us are in CR getting all our teeth replaced. I met a couple from Mass, who were back in CR seeing Dr. Mesa to repair and redo work originally done by Cavallini. Again, only their side of the story but they did say Cavallini refunded all their money unlike another couple who had major issues with Prisma.

Bottom-line and as often said on this site, people need to do their own research, take what is being said on this site and the recommendations with a grain of salt, avoid the obvious shills, interview your dentists (how many of you ever did that with a dentist at home?), don't be afraid to ask stupid questions or have them tell you what they're doing every step of the way, get assurances of follow-up care if something goes wrong, hold your dentist accountable for their treatments and make sure they give you and explanation of why your teeth are the why they were and the proper regime to follow for after care. Finally, regardless if you’ve chosen Anglada, Cavallini, Mesa, Kaver, Flikier, or any of the host of other CR dentists, you’ll probably get as good, if not much better care, than you’ll get in the US for a lot less cost.

When choosing a dentist, I would highly recommend contacting people off line. It was extremely difficult to choose because of the contradictory info on this blog. I know I read through every thread at least 4 times. Once I started communicating off line, and talking to people on the phone, with that info, and the other resources I consulted, picking a dentist them became VERY easy. People will tell you a lot more privately than they will post online. I'm happy to share my experience, and what I've learned from a year's research and can be contacted at infoseeker4@yahoo.com.

I just got done with having 18 new crowns with Dr Castro. I previously had 8 implants placed with Dr Anglada. So 8 crowns over the implants, and 10 over my existing teeth. Very pleased with the quality and they look fabulous and feel very secure and strong.

I am not the best patient and have a lot of anxiety about dental work. I did end up in tears a couple times with my nerves, and Dr Castro quickly summoned Dr Anglada and my favorite receptionist to come comfort me. I really appreciated their efforts to make me comfortable. They will also give you a versed if you need it (Which I did several times).

I can email pictures if anyone wants to see the before and afters. Email me at toothwonder03@yahoo.com

Just returned from 8 days in CR visiting Dr's Cavallini/Marco's office.

My 6 front lower teeth had worn down and lost much of their top and side enamel exposing the weaker and yellower dentin areas. It was looking kind of gross and beginning to feel sensitive to temperature changes. Something had to be done.

They also did a crown prep and install on my lower right side rear tooth that had cracked here in Florida.

I had been to these dentists before for several implants so I looked forward to returning to that happy patient office where folks from around the world have a smile and a story to tell about how much $$ they saved and how they loved their results.

The work they did was most excellent on all 7 teeth so I find myself smiling into a mirror lots more than before. Fantastic. Total cost:$2650 on my Discover Card. Not sure if they give cash discounts or not.

These gentlemen are as honest and talented as the day is long. If they promise it they will make it happen for you and at the quoted price.

They also gave us a DVD describing tooth care procedures upon returning home. They also have you picked up at the airport free of charge. Jet Blue nonstop rt from Orlando was $318.

Bottom line was another wonderful trip to Paradise with most excellent results. These guys are the best!! Thanks.

If you live in the NE Florida area I will be happy to meet in person with you to show you their handi-work in person or will email pics to anyone.
