Marilyn, sorry about your bad experience with Prisma, and thank you for sharing it. I was considering them too. I need a sinus lift, mandibular bone graft, and many implants. I emailed several dentist, and was surprised to find out all of them do bone graft and implant placement at the same time. It is not recommended here in US. Especially for the sinus lift. All of them are using the cheapest bone graft (bovine), which normally takes at least 8-12 month to integrate in the bone. This type of the bone graft has higher failure rate, and is not as well researched as allograft (cadaver) bone graft mostly used in US. The best bone graft is your own bone, but it is not often used even here, because of possible additional complication, and much higher costs. I did an extensive researched on the dental implants, as you can see. I am tempted to go to Costa Rica or elsewhere, because there is no way I will ever will be able to afford $60,000 on my teeth (that's what I was quoted here).

I too had a bad experience with Prisma Dental. There is also a Dental reputation destroyer which searches out bad things said about dentists and destroys content on the web. But you have to go on something other than the site itself.

I think Prisma is excellent in advertising itself, but not in dental care. There are people all over these blogs warning against them and I haven't seen that with any other dentists in Costa Rica. And they aren't all the same person because I've been in touch with a few.

I need to know if anyone knows Dr.Andres furchtgott in Costa rica? I heard he was very good denist. I have been online searching for days....I am hearing stories where people get 27 crowns for 7,000 dollars? But the same dental web site that they say they went to would quote a different price....it would be much more.

I am starting to wonder.....What is going on?
I wonder who the costa rican people rate as the best cosmetic denist? Is it possible that all the denist advertised online are catering "only" to americans? I don't know.....does anyone?

There are only five surgeons recognized in Costa Rica to do Bone grafts. I , also had a horrible experience with PRISMA dental, and would advise others to run from them. They are very skilled at using the Internet for their benefit, but they do not have the training and skills for dental implants. The following are the only dentists recognized by the colegia of Cirujanos in Costa Rica:( the college of surgeons_

ANGLADA RODRIGUEZ ARNOLDO 2232-0105 2290-2121
GARITA CARRILLO MARIO 2288-2160 2288-5185
LOPEZ RUIZ ALVARO 2290-7329 2291-0092
NAVARRO HENRIQUEZ IVAN 2225-0519 2225-0519
OBANDO AGUERO LUIS GUILLERMO 2228-0141 2289-6984

these are the only dentists to consider using for implants.

Please go carefully.

I used Dr. Mario Garita, saved $12,000 an got everything done. http://www.dentalimplantscr.com

Hello:
I also had work done by Dr Garita (implants) in July of 08 and found him to be excellent. Well worth the trip. Lovely country and very friendly people. Only problem we had was the stay at Las Cumbres Inn. If having dental work done no need to stay there. Dogs barking all day and thru the night.( They give you ear plugs when you check in) no help. Was unable to use pool or garden due to construction all over the Inn. The food was of poor quality etc. We had booked the inn for 14 Nights but only stayed for 8. But they charged us 50 per cent for the days we left. Even charged us for the cost of 3 meals per day they we did not stay there. Lovely Inn just down the street from Las Cumbres called El Quijote (lovely place and much less expensive) Fell free to e-mail us for any questions.

Dentist to use for implants

Going to Costa Rica soon for dental implants. I was going to use Prima but am not going to do so now. Has anyone on this board used either Dr. Navaro or Dr. Obando?

thanks

Both my husband and I had work done on our teeth by Prisma Dental, and we couldn't be happier with the results. Dr. Cordero and Dr. Rubenstein were extremely professional, and their entire staff was caring and helpful. When we called the clinic during business hours, there was always someone there to answer the phone. We were even able to speak with both dentists before we left the States, and once, when I mistakenly called the clinic number after business hours, my call was forwarded directly to Dr. Rubensein and not some answering service! The work they did (implants and veneers for both of us) is world class and the cost was about 1/3 of what we would have had to pay in the states. We were able to get an exact cost for our procedures before we ever left home, and never once did they try to change the prices that we were originally quoted and never once did they try to sell us something that we didn't ask for. I don't know who Marilyn saw when she claims that she went to Prisma Dental, but her experience does not ring true.

I have posted before about Dr. Arnoldo Anglada who is on the list that Susan posted (comment #54). You really can't go wrong with him...he is compassionate, honest, thorough and a world class implant specialist as far as I'm concerned. I would be happy to correspond with anyone if you need specifics. He has saved me thousands of dollars compared to dentists in the US and has restored my son's confidence. I know several others who have seen him...one man got 17 implants with Dr. Anglada and is extremely happy...another who was a toothgrinder and embarrassed about her smile narrowed it down to three dentists in CR. After she and I spoke over the phone and emailed each other she emailed Dr. Anglada...he personally called her and spent quite a bit of time answering her questions. She ended up seeing him and came back thrilled...so thrilled that she is going back with her sister from England.
Feel free to email me if you have questions.

I just wish to reiterate that the list I posted was to clarify which dentists were recognized by the Costa Rican College of Surgeons for Implants.

There are only five names on that list, and it is scary that so many other dentists puprport to have the training and expertise to do these sensitive procedures.

I appreciate Cheryl posting about Dr. Anglada. I have also heard good things about Dr. Navarro.

Others have said to avoid Dr. Cordero and Rubenstein, and I would second that motion. Those are the dentists at Prisma. They may be good for minor dental procedures, but they should not be used for implants.

In general the quality of medical care in Costa Rica is excellent and once one has made a choice to pursue dentistry here, hopefully they can see some of the beauty of the country.

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Pisces

Someone is extremely headstrong and defiant today, and there's every chance that you're the one fitting this description. The more others are trying to make you behave yourself or do what they want, the more determined you'll be to do the exact opposite. Well, it is a Full Moon, and a lunar eclipse in emotional Cancer, so you're excused! Show them that you're an individual in your own right without going completely overboard about it, because that will cause trouble. Then once you've got all that off your chest you can relax and look forward to a really Happy New Year!
