<2nd half of the previous post>

5. when i went to my original choice of dentists (not the cavallini office), my total, which was supposed to be $12K USD suddenly jumped to $35K. i got out of the chair and walked out of the office. i then did the real homework. i've been back to c.r. three times for about a month each time. i've made friends there and learned a lot. i sat in the offices of about 50 dentists chatting with the patients, talked to locals and to cab drivers (who really know EVERYthing) and i learned a lot. hence, my choice of the cavallinis.

6. before i left c.r. after my first visit and the scam artist experience, i took a meeting with the head of san jose's CIMA hospital. CIMA is a fine hospital and has many affiliates around the world, all headquartered in texas. i explained to the head that the 'branding' of his hospital was being wrecked by the dentists who use the CIMA address and pad the price while giving shoddy work. he agreed. he called a meeting with his board and discussed this and other issues. i would suggest that if you have had a problem with a dentist who uses CIMA hospital's cachet and reputation, you go to the head of the hospital and let him know. that may be your best recourse there.

7. costa rica is as safe as anywhere else. there are bad areas but as a 'newbie' you might not know where they are. just as you would be wise while walking in your own home town, you must be wise walking in san jose. don't carry money, bring jewelry, carry your passport (bring a xerox of the first 2 pages with you), etc. in other words, don't make yourself an easy target.

8. however long your dentist tells you it's going to take, remember that no dentist works on weekends so the days counted are business days. also give yourself an extra couple of days at the end for 'just in case'. your new mouth may need a little extra tweaking to be just right.

there's much more but i think that covers what i noticed that could use a little more info in this blog. you are all intelligent posters and have good information about what has occurred to you. your questions are important. those who answer honestly are great.

as an adjunct to your visit, don't be afraid to enjoy the country and its people! you'd be missing out on wondrous experiences that will give you things to talk about with your friends. and, between that and your new smile, they will be so jealous!

have fun in costa rica!!! jerry6665@yahoo.com

we traveled to costa rica in december 2009 & again in january/february 2010 - and three of us - myself, my mother-in-law and my husband - received new beautiful zirconium smiles - and the best dental work & materials available anywhere in the world. i, personally, had 9 laser root canals, 12 zirconium posts & 29 zirconium crowns & bridges.
we were fortunate to find smile90210costarica.com - it is a dental clinic, affiliated with a huge, state-of-the-art american-owned lab on the premises, with dentists trained in costa rica, germany & switzerland. it is truly 21st century dental care.
yes, you can afford it. the costs are reasonable - and likely 80-90% less than what your american dentist would charge. the cr govt sets price ranges - and some dental clinics there are on the low end and many are on the high end. this one is more to the low end of the ranges.
yes, if you have dental insurance, they will likely reimburse you the allowed amounts for the necessary & covered work. ours did.
high-tech equipment + well-trained, caring dentists + no metal - world-class materials = beautiful, affordable smiles!
look at their website - give Mike a call on the toll free line and get your guesstimate. it likely will surprise you!

BTW, I do have before & afters if anyone wants to see the beautiful work they did for me and my family members. It is also a NEW clinic, as of November 2009, located at a huge american-owned laboratory.
The dentists, Dr. Yelda Fernandez, did my work; and Dr. Andrea Stedem did my mother-in-law's and my huband's mouths.
Superb.
They will pick you up from the airport and provide your transportation to appointments while you are there.
I AM COMPLETELY METAL FREE!

Please share........Has anyone seen the ''cosmetic dental work'' of any dentist in Costa Rica?
I am talking about full mouth restoration with new crowns.
I am looking for the best.
Not the best for implants or else,...I am not talking 2-4-6 crowns.
I need ''full mouth restoration''.
Which dentist has an eye to create a beautiful white smile with crowns that fit well????
Please help!
Mariposa: Educated myself - did my research - needed a whole mouth restoration because of poor dental work here in the U.S.- elected to have ALL METAL REMOVED from my mouth and zirkonzahn zironium. Chose smile90210costarica.com . Dr. Yelda Fernandez did my work. Superb. Beautiful. My teeth are like diamonds; my bite is restored.
My mil & husband both went there, too - and saw Dr. Andrea Stedem.
Call the owner, Mike; discuss your case with him.
You won't be disappointed with their work. Just allow enough time there to get what needs to be done, finished while you are there.

To Lane59: I am in the middle of my work with Drs. Anglada and Castro. I have already had 9 extractions and 9 implants and 1 root canal. So far, so good. I go back in July for the prosthetic phase. I am a single (young- 68 y.o.)woman and I traveled alone and had no worries or issues. Dr. Anglada's driver met me at the airport and drove me to my hotel. I stayed at Apartotel La Sabana that is a short taxi ride from his office and had a kitchen/bedroom combo so I was able to buy groceries ahead of the surgery and prepare easy to chew/swallow food before undergoing the surgery. I was quite able to take care of myself, and the other people at the hotel-- some of whom were his patients-- pitched in too. I even got to do a small amount of travel and joined a wonderful day tour with other people. So my singleness was not an issue at all. So far I am quite pleased and impressed with my care.

I DID NOT USE Dr. Anglada ....
I never wrote that I did I am using another DENTIST
who wrote that quote because I certainly did not ...
I wanted cosmetic care and did not agree with what
was presented to me when I went to this dentists office .
I am using Dr. Flikier awesome experience anyone can
ask me about it . Please feel free to emaill me @ DKaye78389@aol.com I would be happy to speak to you either by phone or email. I don't understand why my name is on that quote
unless someone answered a question that I asked months ago I purposely do not comment on this board every dentist I met with
prior to my choice I would not choose they were way too hectic for me.

I am actually leaning towards using Dr. Flikier too, after doing a lot of research. Nobody's said much about him on here, but there was a nice article online about him and two other dentists offices that were well thought of and family owned, regarding the expansion of their practices to include a focus on Americans and Europeans as patients, as well as their regular locals. Dr. Flikier's father apparently started the business, and he's taken over in the last few years. Their website was very well done, and the before/after pics were a lot better/more natural looking than some of the other dentists' work that I've seen. There are videos of each of the specialists discussing what they do, they seem to care and be professional and that's helpful. The facility looks really nice. Also, he uses Dr. Navarro for implants, who is board certified.

So I'm thinking it's gonna be him or Dr. Anglada, just from initial research.

LadyBoss, please let us know how it goes with Dr. Flikier.

I visited both and I am in the first part of my process please feel free to email me and we can speak. Dr. Flikier is a class act I have never had such treatment in my life. Dr. Navarro is great my Mom had 4 implants done in one sitting and I had one did not feel a thing ...afterwards we went to the beach for the weekend. There is not much about him on the board and I hesitated to write about him
because the office is different it is run as if you are the only person in the world .Dr. Flikier is a kind guy all modern office and really cares.
The office is such a cut above. I did research too
and he is well known the whole family are doctors 4 brothers and his Father. I was treated like gold.
Dr. Flikier and his team went have great training.
Dr. Navarro has an awesome personality and very gentle usually, I get nitrious this was the first time I didn't in my whole life and it was painless.
Do yourself a favor meet with both and then choose

hello pietro,
i had panoramic xrays done here in L.A. and had them sent to the dentists i was considering in c.r. the cost was $75 in Los Angeles to have them made by a lab that does only that-make panoramic xrays. it might have been less expensive to get them done by the dentist when i actually got to costa rica but it saved me time because i could send them to dentists at a fairly cheap cost. they can be emailed if they're put on disk. they are much better than those stupid xray things they jam in your mouth! and, cheaper, by the way! the catch is that dentist has to have a special xray machine that goes on a track around your head instead of pointing only at your mouth so some cities/towns have a place you go to just for those xrays. my dentist here in l.a. didn't have that machine so i found one of those places.

sadly, the dentist i originally chose in c.r. turned out to be a con artist. i couldn't believe it because we had spoken one-on-one by phone several times over 3 weeks and he had an office in the prestigious CIMA hospital. luckily, i got my money back from him (by threatening to go to the head of CIMA hospital where he had rented an office). then, because i was kind of stuck in san jose (costa rica) anyway with a non-refundable ticket, it offered me the opportunity to evaluate ON-SITE other dentists.

i took the time to check a bunch of them out by talking to patients in their offices, asking around of the locals and ex-patriots (americans living in costa rica) who was good, etc. i figured i was going to have to live with the work done and the cost for a looooong time so i'd better be more careful.

i evaluated dr. anglada and found his reputation to be very nice and his work appeared to be good but his prices... well, i was displeased with those. they were comparable to prices in the states.

(continued from last post)

i did not see dr. flikier - missed him - but was aware of his family who all practise various kinds of medicine. and, i was also aware that he had a dental practise but didn't hear much else about him from the folks in c.r..

i evaluated prisma...and ran away fast from them to quote monty python!

the choice for me after speaking with present and past patients, cost, etc., as i've said before, was the offices of the cavallini family. the price was more than 1/3 less than anglada and the work was as good if not better. the patients in the cavallini office were so pleased with the gentle work, what their teeth looked like, any aftercare they needed, the fact that the cavallinis were themselves available after hours if necessary, the consideration of the dentists at cavallini's place - and the lifetime guarantee on their implants - that i probably would have chosen them no matter how much it cost. i was such a dental chicken that a dentist who let ME be in control was a real good thing for me.

dr. cavallini accepted the molds of my mouth that i brought him from my dentist here as well as the panoramic views i took here. he took his own panoramic views several times during the work at no extra cost to make sure we were doing things right. i had some crowns made here in the states a long time ago and it turned out that under one of the bigger gold crowns was a humongoid cavity and infection which didn't show up on any xrays. it was hidden by the gold crown and was found when we took the crown off.

the bottom line is that the panoramic views are soooo much better than those dumb pieces of plastic jammed in your mouth that they're worth getting no matter where you go to get the work done. and, they're cheaper - who'd have believed that!!!

good luck in c.r. and remember to have fun while you're there!

I beg to differ about Dr. Anglada's prices vs. US prices. He may be higher than Dr. Cavallini, but not than in the US. I had worked with the Harvard Dental School student/resident (much cheaper than a "real" dentist) before heading to Dr. Anglada. I was quoted $2,000/implant, done by a student! And that did not include the prosthetic work which would probably have added $1,000/restoratinon! A regular, fully grown dentist quoted me $5,000-6,000 per implant (complete). This was in the Boston area which may be more expensive than some. But it's in the US. Dr. Anglada/Dr. Castro's price per implant complete comes to less than half of the student price and far less than the full-fledged US dentist's price.

hi,
yes, i'm sure that boston is more expensive than many places (except for here in l.a. <grin>) but dr. anglada suggested my implants would be about $1400 including the crown. dr. cavallini posts his prices online and, and although i hadn't checked him out while i was in l.a. and didn't see those prices, he didn't vary when he gave me my estimate in his office. his implants are $500 & crown is $250 or 300 depending on which you choose. period. that's $750 or $800 total. considering that i had 10 implants and 24 crowns... you do the math... that's a huge difference. AND, dr. cavallini originally quoted me a price based on fewer implants but when he realized the molar that had the gold crown on it was diseased and had to be pulled, he did NOT up the price even though i required another implant. even pulling that difficult tooth was not charged to me. he said,'i told you it would be this much and that's how much it will be.' is that integrity or what!

on the other hand, my mother had one implant and one crown done here in hollywood at the same time as i was in c.r.. hers cost her $5,000!!! for ONE!! looks like hollywood and boston work their prices out together <smile>.

i'm NOT dissing dr. anglada at all. his work looked good but, to me, seemed no better than dr. cavallini's work when i was researching and talking to patients in c.r.. and, i live in the land of plastic body parts, botox and veneers so the judgement here is pretty harsh. drs. cavallini, peralta and garita in the cavallini office were the three who gently worked with me on my mouth and their work passed the inspection here in malibu/los angeles with flying colors!

sorry if you thought i was somehow dissing dr. anglada. i just found that the cavallini office was as good (if not better for a dental chicken like me) and much less expensive when i checked.

p.s. in case you hadn't seen the estimate the l.a. dentists gave me ... they were well over $100K AND their diagnosis was wrong, to boot. sheesh.

on the other hand, my dental work, my time in costa rica (food, lodging, transportation, air fare, fun stuff to do - and i did a LOT of fun stuff!) cost me less than $13K and i had a great vacation!!! met a lot of really great people who are still in touch. like the commercial says,'priceless'.

hi webmaster guru...
is there a reason my city shows up as long beach? i don't live anywhere near there, it's about 30 miles south of me. or does the 'long beach' show up because it filters through the long beach branch of topix?
thx,

Thank you to the creator of this blog and to all those who have posted here. You have created a tremendous resource for those of us seeking information about dental procedures in Costa Rica. I've spent hours/days researching the Web to help me decide what to do and which dentist to choose for my work. This blog is by far the most helpful resource I found to inform my choice. I will be sure to report on my experience in the days ahead in the hope it will help others as I've been helped.
