Well folks, Im in Costa Rica at the Casa Marco using the computer provided for their guests at no charge.I got here at 12:00 their time which is 2 hours behind Eastern time. I had 3 sessions today: x rays, mold work for impressions, and finally a detailed treatment plan with Dr. Marco. The sessión was not rushed and he answered all questions. As others have said, he speaks perfect English. He made me feel good by telling me that he could tell that I have done my homework and jokingly said, I should hire you. Yeah, right; trust me, he does not EVEN want to go there. I got one call in my room and the other times I chatted with folks in the waiting room. And yes, the waiting rooms(3) have plenty of activity with most coming from the USA and Canada.

I took a walk later(after dark), not by choice, but I did not eat all day. And what a walk THAT was. I got lost for 2 hours.

Oh well, first surgery tomorrow at 5:00PM....on a Friday no less. In the states? No way San Jose(LOL).

Hi Melissa.
Although I haven't used Dr. Garita for any dental work, he made it to my short-list of dentists chosen to perform my implants. I have done EXTENSIVE homework on five of the most frequently discussed dentists on this forum and Dr. Garita appears to be quite competent. In fact, I had a lengthy telephone conversation with him just a few weeks ago and was quite impressed with his professionalism and knowledge. His english is extremely good and communication was no problem at all.
For what it's worth, I, personally, would have no problem sitting in Dr. Garita's chair for complicated dental work.
I will make my maiden voyage to Costa Rica on June 17th and have chosen Dr. Arnoldo Anglada/ Dr. Castro as my dentists.
Good luck with your dental journey!~

Hi Melissa!

Patients have been posting their follow-up reports in Topix pages 178-183. There are some good ideas in there from patients with actual experience.

I posted my 2-year follow-up report in 3651 and 3652 (April 13, 2013). I also suggested other dentists that made my ultra-short list. I mention it here because I don't see it listed in my public posts when I click my name. My contact information is there too. I'm not a "shill" just a grateful patient.

Best of luck to you!

Hey Woody, I'm glad you are finding things to be moving along satisfactorily. If you are still at Casa Marco next week I will look for you! I HATE getting lost and by then you should have no problem finding your way around town. Are you going to do any tours?

Hey Chicago dave. Thanks for the reply. I read thru some of your posts and spent time reading thru others to see if anyone has seen Dr Ignacio Vargas Gould. I went on his website and looks good but not sure how well he is with doing implants. His price seems fair. If you or anyone know anything about him that would be greatly appreciated. I think he's under American Dental.

Thanks. Melissa

Dog_lover,
It's been an interesting evening. Surgery at 5:30PM. A bone graft, an extraction, and six implants. Done at 6:30PM and was not feeling too great at all. Took 3 Alieve and by 7:30, I was shocked that I had NO PAIN. No dinner for me tonight....why mess up a good thing. Have been in the hotel lobby with some other guests since 8PM. It is now 11:45PM. When you do as much talking as I do, you need to have decent teeth.

Walking in the daytime is So much better. I still have not gotten motivated to do any touristy things. W'ell see.

RE: EXAMPLES OF SEARCHING TOPIX BOARD FOR SPECIFIC DENTISTS

Hi Melissa!

I pride myself in my knowledge of C.R. dentists, but, even so, I researched only a couple dozen by phone interviews and talking with patients. And I've only been examined in person by seven C.R. dentists. I don't know anything about the dentist you mention, so I can't help you.

Did you search the Topix board for posts on him?

This Google search will take you to any mentions of him:

site:www.topix.com/forum/world /costa-rica/THGCO47LHH1FS7DR7
(Vargas OR Gould OR Ignacio OR "American Dental")

I've had to break it into two or three lines to display correctly, but you'd copy and paste both lines into the single text box of the Google search box. You will have to search the individual pages to find the specific post.

Speaking of searches, people interested in Prisma Dental as mentioned by MJO in post #3737, can easily find comments by other posters about that practice:

site:www.topix.com/forum/world /costa-rica/THGCO47LHH1FS7DR7
(Prisma OR Prizma OR Cordero OR Rubenstein OR Rubinstein)

A hour spent searching for your prospective dentist--whomever you're interested in--would be time well spent.

Melissa, many dentists have great web sites. Is there anything else that attracts you to the dentist you mention? Relevant strengths would be specialized training (specialist in periodontics) or an excellent track record in implants (1,000s of successes).

If you or other readers want to pick my brain, I'd be glad to talk. It's easier for me to talk then to post.

Best of luck!

Freaking AMAZING! All that work and you're still functioning. I am just blown away. Bravo! I'm such a baby I think I'll be curled up in a fetal position and cuddling my pillow! Can I ask if you (or anyone here) had the IV sedation for your work, or did you all just brave it with Novocain? I'm bringing Aleve and Motrin with me since I'm not sure the dentists provide any "afterwork" pain medication. Here in the US when I had an implant done 10 years ago (when I had dental insurance), the dentists provided a few Vicodin for pain management. I'm glad there are people to talk to there in Casa Marco. I'm bringing my laptop/ipad to watch some movies I've downloaded, but I'm not much of a sit around person. On at least one of the weekends I'm in Costa Rica, I'm hoping I can schedule at least one visit to the rainforest and one to a coffee plantation. I LOVE coffee, and Costa Rica is heaven for coffee drinkers!

Sat. 5-18....Had breakfast at 9am, 2 eggs, some fruit, and juice at the hotel's morning continental setup. Cannot get WiFi connection so am using hotel computer.

No problems with teeth or mouth. Have not needed anything other than the Amoxicillin for infection. I will try for some soup this afternoon. Again, I want to take things slowly.

Dog_Lover, I know how you feel, but you should be fine.

Hi Dog Lover,

I'm a nervous nelly when it comes to those darned novocaine injections. In fact, that was the main cause of my fear! I really hate the needles. But, really, I was so surprised that it was almost a non-event! I'm not saying I didn't feel it, but it wasn't nearly anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be. A teeny tiny pricking sensation and then nothing! Fantastic! When that first needle entered my mouth, my heart was banging like a drum! But, after the first one, it quietened down and I was so much calmer than I thought I would be.

It's been 8 days since I had 11 crowns, 6 veneers and 5 fillings. I still have quite a bit of sensitivity, but understand that it could be a few weeks before it goes away. Of course, being the nervous nelly that I am, I am imagining all sorts of horrors! But, Dr. Obando is emailing me regularly, asking how I am, giving me advice and keeping me grounded! I am heading back down to see him on May 29th to get my bite adjusted and he can have a good look at everything to make sure there is noting unusual going on.

I am being very careful with what I eat, staying with soft, warm foods rather than anything too hot or cold, and am not crunching down on anything!

If anyone is going to be there on the evening of the 29th I'm up for a get together!

I will definitely be there at Casa Marco on the 29th. I just don't know yet what my "status" will be--if I've not had surgery then, lets talk NrevousNelly!

Woody, just noted that you stated you couldn't use WIFI there at Casa Marco. Was this just an intermittent thing, or is the WIFI there nonfunctional? I planned to bring my laptop, but if using the WIFI is not feasible, I don't want to bother.

Just made my flight reservations to CR for June 16th, returning to the US seven days later on June 23rd. Total round-trip flight cost from Orlando for two people on Spirit Air is $1,056. Perhaps it might have been less expensive with another airline, but I didn't check.

Funny ... the actual tickets were only $900 ... the additional $1,056 was all for add-ons such as seating, baggage, blah blah blah.

Now ... to get my hotel confirmed and I'm all set. At the recommendation of several folks on this forum, I'm inclined to stay at the Cristina; however, I'm open to any suggestions. It's my understanding that the Cristina is in very close proximity to Dr. Anglada/Dr. Castro's office.

OOPS ... in my previous post I meant to say that the additional $156 (not $1,056) was all for add-ons, such as seating, baggage, blah blah blah.

I was thinking you must have some HEAVY luggage! Not too bad. I'm paying about the same for first class on American Airlines from San Francisco via Miami
