If china would worry more about their bootlegging industry instead of the restrictions they're putting on the internet we'd all be a bit better off.

If America charged sensible prices for DVDs then there wouldn't be as much incentive to pirate them.

I can buy a legal DVD in China for as little as 4 RMB (everybody, even America makes money) so why do they charge 25 RMB for a new release (lots of profit but no turnover)?

Don't be silly, I'm still going to buy the pirated version of Ice Age III when it's released as a quality copy.

To put it in a more metaphysical way, one's so set in one's way that hell will freeze over first.

If China wasn't ripping them off - it would just be some other country, and they all do Korea, Thailand, Taiwan. I've been on the streets and seen the bootlegs for movies that are currently screening - before the DVD has been released.

How do the get to make them BEFORE the DVD comes out?

The US had the same problem in the 1970's with pirated
tapes and videos. They were sold openly here on the streets in every city. Then stop copy technology was used until gradually media couldn't be pirated.
With new emerging technology over the internet, cds and
dvds are becoming obsolete. No big deal, its all part of the game. Everybody wants a deal wherever you live.

a Hollywood release date is for the public. Normally the movie is available for privileged viewers before it is shown in theaters for every one. Of course we all have heard of premieres where queens and kings, and all the big shots get to view the movie.

What we don't know is that the new movie has been going around the globe in all American embassies abroad so that American diplomats can view it. Not only American diplomats get to view it but also their foreign guests.

This is where the movie gets duplicated and sold to the black market before the public release date.

Add industry insiders to that list. Where there's money to be made, there is somebody willing to sell a master and somebody eager to buy it.
Same with industrial/commercial espionage. Greed is insidious around the world. Capitalism at its worst.
China is a relatively new player on the world black market. Russia has been a premier player on the black market for decades. It's all part of the game.

Promotional DVDs are circulated before the launch. Many of these get copied.

I have seen pirated movies with subtitle saying its the property of a certian studio for screening, I think someone works for the studio secretly made copies and sold it to the black market. Some DVDs are just shot in cinemas with audience talking and eating popcorn, bad quality, you want to see a good quality movie this is not it.
