Chen Zuoer, a Beijing official who helped negotiate Hong Kong’s return to Chinese rule 15 years ago, said on a recent visit here that he was “heartbroken” to learn that Hong Kong protesters have taken to waving colonial-era flags emblazoned with the British Union Jack.

After 15 years as part of China, a population that is overwhelmingly Chinese and deeply proud of its Chinese heritage has increasingly come to view the rest of the country as a source of trouble, not pride, that needs to be kept at arm’s length.

“Of course, I’m Chinese. One hundred percent Chinese,” said Kenny Choi, a 23-year-old who works in a printing factory and took part in a protest last month that featured the waving of British colonial-era flags.“But I don’t trust Chinese Communists.. .&# 8201;. Hong Kong is different and has to preserve its own values.” Choi joined the rally, held at Sheung Shui railway station near a border crossing to mainland China, to express his anger over throngs of mainland traders who pour in each day by train to buy baby formula, cosmetics and other goods for resale back on the other side of the border.

Chin Wan-kan, an academic and the author of a widely discussed book that advocates Hong Kong becoming an independent city-state, said Hong Kong has no problem embracing China in the abstract, just not the mainland in its current form, which he described as “a mixture of rotten Chinese culture plus Soviet colonialism.” Hong Kong, he said, is “definitely Chinese” but, thanks to its long exposure to the West, represents “modern Chinese culture,” rather than what he sees as a retrograde mainland variant

Those idiots flying the colonial flags are just a small vocal MINORITY in Hong Kong, as you can see from their legislative election last month, where that type got crushed at the polls.

And Taiwan independence idiots like you are also a small vocal MINORITY in Taiwan, as you can see from this year's election, which YOU LOST. Your future? Self-immolation in 20 years, after Taiwan's re-unification with the mainland.

We have a similar problem here in the states. Its become increasingly politically incorrect to encourage immigrants to assimilate. Instead, we do everything we can to make it easier for them to never assimilate. In California for example, our drivers license handbook comes in Spanish.

With immigration reform politically impossible due to the strength of the Latino vote, this trend will only continue especially since they have way more kids than whites. I can't belief deporting illegal immigrants has become so difficult.

I can see us becoming a Latin American country in 3 or 4 generations. I think the north eastern states should kick the south western states out of the Union so we can preserve whats left of our white anglosaxon protestant culture.

Based on the latest population trends, the European-Americans, who are a hair under 60 % of U.S. population now, will become less than 50 % by 2032. That's also the year some say U.S. will become a Third World Country.

Yes, your last hope is hiding out in Maine, where it's -40 C. Good luck!

This is precisely why I keep saying we need someone like Sarah Palin as president. But its never gonna happen because there is no way you can win a presidential election now without the Latino vote. I have nothing against Mexicans except their own country is a mess and I would hate to see us become like Mexico. For a bible quoting, gun owning, porn watching Republican, this is an absolute nightmare.

For a start, Sarah Palin could begin playing "La Bamba."

By the way, how can a gun-toter like you survive in Taiwan without your favorite rifle?

10-15 years from now Hong Kong will face horrible problems since there are more Chinese from mainland moving to Hong Kong...the population will cause Hong Kong tough to deal with....when Hong Kong fully populated by Chinese from mainland, the problems forever unless you deport them all but how could you do that?

The British occupation also gave them a British accent and possibly their stench. Have you ever noticed that a lot of HK people have bad b.o.? Take a subway ride from Honk Kong to Kowloon during the afternoon rush and you'll know what I mean. The accent - kind of cool. The b.o.- not cool at all.

Notice one of your DPP ex-leaders just went to the mainland to kiss ass. What's up with that, Bill-tard? Slim chance in 2016?

The DPP is throwing a smoke screen over the mainland affairs to try to survive the 2016 election. They'll fail.

I am one for 1 government 2 systems...

there are autonomous regions and special economic zones all over China..

if it aint broke dont fix it...

just tax it...

and thats with me probably having more family in Hong Kong than the mainland

I see no reason to turn the apple cart over...

I see China becoming more Hong Kong Singapore styled government in the future
