Philippines A Fast Grown Nation With Millions In Poverty
Nov 11 2012
MANILA – By the time lunchtime comes around doctors at the Jose Fabella maternity hospital in Manila, Philippines, have already delivered 57 babies and more deliveries are scheduled before the day is over.
By the end of the day between 75 to 100 babies have been born. The maternity ward at the hospital has on average 300 mothers with new babies; far more than the medical facility can properly care for.
Most of the time, mothers must share a bed, often 3 to 4 mothers to one bed.
Every day the maternity ward at the Jose Fabella hospital is overcrowded, housing about 300 mothers and newborns. Photo Credit: REUTERS
The Philippines, a predominantly Roman Catholic nation, is one of the fastest growing countries in Asia, despite millions living in utter poverty.
As devotees to their religion, these millions follow the church’s advice not to use contraceptives. The state tries its best to convinced its citizens that using contraceptives is not a sin.
The Philippines government wants to use the image of an overcrowded maternity ward to approve a controversial law that would make contraceptives freely available in their country, especially to the poor.
But the move has brought the Philippines President, Benigno Aquino, into confrontation with the powerful Catholic Church.
Filipinos, especially those living in poverty and having little or no education, are rigid in their believes and prefer to listen to the church.
Elena Penavosa, 33, who lives with her family of 8 children under a railroad bridge in a Manila slum, struggles to feed her kids, ages 4 to 13, every day.
Yet Penavosa says:“If the Lord wants me to multiply, I will multiply … we are guided by him.”

Are you jealous that the Philippines is advancing rapidly economically? Much better than USA and Canada.

You stayed in my country for a while but left. You couldn't enjoy the benefits after you left. The success is a big surprise to you since you always look down on us.

We do not want you anyway.

Things will not improve in the Philippines. It will improve but it will take another 30 to 40 years before more will get out of poverty. The cultural norms in the Philippines must improve on eradicating the more negative traits such as backward religious views, having too many kids, backstabbing one another, and laziness towards cleaning up the country.

Filipina women need to learn to stop being stupid and ignorant, as your comment here reveals the harsh truth. Using condoms are needed to be used, and common sense needs to be more "common" to the masses.

Are you sure, Philippine will be the largest economy in ASEAN by 2020? And the largest in ASEAN will only be ranked 16th in the world?
No need to wait for 2020, Indonesia in 2011 was already the 16th largest economy in the world, the largest in ASEAN. With total GDP was almost USD 850 Billion, while Philippines' was only around USD 230 Billion. It needs double digit growth annually to surpass Indonesia by 2020. It's nearly IMPOSSIBLE.
This uncivilized, illiterate and most inferior Indonesians commented again. Claiming that their country is rich, rich in bullshieyts.

Well, if you are smarter Indonesian call them and I will give you the number. Or maybe you can forecast your own prediction about the economy of Indonesia and post it. Ahhh, nobody will believe Indonesians because they are known to be uneducated people. hahahaha.

Really?? Advancing??? If their is so much "success" why is the Philippines begging other countries for free military hardware. Why can't they like every other country in the world pay for their own defense.

Why the unpleasantness Don American? You should be happy and be thankful as you're living in the Philippines. When all are happy, perhaps you will feel happy too, unless you want the Filipinos to be unsuccessful. That's the only reason why you keep on flaring up if there is any positive news about the Filipinos. Too bad!

Poverty in Spain is way below that of the Philippines. The European Union is in a recession but will recover in the next 3 or 4 years.

Philippines however, will not recover from being run down by selfish individuals with the likes of Marcos and other members of Philippine society any time soon.

Hey FAKE AMERICAN WU MAO lol

That's NOT ALWAYS the CASE

JAPAN is Expanding its RESOURCES to FIGHT CHINA

JAPAN knows THAT the Philippines has DISPUTE WITH CHINA

and JAPAN also knows that the PHILIPPINES is a U.S. Ally and a NATO friendly country.

the Philippines and JAPAN HAVE NO territorial dispute as well

the Philippines is also a DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY LIKE JAPAN

So IT IS FAIR to SAY that both countries HAVE THINGS IN COMMON

So it is NO surprise that JAPAN and the Philippines are FORMING ALLIANCE

COMMON GOAL: Prevent CHINESE EXPANSIONISM

So answer the question. If the Philippine economy is doing so well according to all your posts then why can't they pay for their military hardware.
lol YOU CLEARLY HAVE NO COMMON SENSE

The Philippines JUST signed its MULTI BILLION DOLLAR Military Modernization BUDGET.

Do you think they can get the equipments the NEXT DAY?

lol

they have to SHOP FIRST, they have to see WHICH ONCE are better than to the OTHER

it has to go through BIDDING as WELL.

also

Countries like South Korea, France etc has to approve the REQUEST FIRST THEN

BUILD THE MACHINES FOR AT LEAST A YEAR

LOL

do you think the Philippines can get THOSE EQUIPMENTS RIGHT AWAY?

LOL

Even JAPAN'S Patrol Boats will take a year to be delivered to the Philippines

lol

USE your Common SENSE

Vietnam ordered 6 submarines from RUSSIA and did they get them right away?

lol

it takes a while dude USE YOUR COMMON SENSE HAHAHA!

Frigates, FIGHTER jets, RADARS etc. are in that MODERNIZATION list so JUST be PATIENT!

also, NOT ALL "WISHED" EQUIPMENTS ARE ANNOUNCED

and NOT all BUDGET Info is released.

SOME OF THEM ARE "CLASSIFIEDS"

lol

use your common sense!

<quoted text>Let me tell you something with the bystander's viewpoints....Do not let people of the world think Philippinos are parasites of USA. A faraway friend couldn't come to rescue on time for a next-door disaster, not memntioning the abandonment of US in the case of crisis(like SVN in 1974 in which Chinks robbed Paracel Islands from them in front of the US 7th Fleets' nose). Learn well from VN. They are on their way of self reliance with their best. Chinks invaded them so many times when they were in..UN embargo(1979), abandoned by Soviet( Spratly Island invasion of Chink in 1988). YET, they are still true survivor and currently among strongest Naval Forces within South East Asia. Philippino friends, put aside national pride and have an in-depth truth into your cappability. If you are true patriot of your fatherland, no matter where you live, you will be always ready for the sake of nation....
I understand what you are saying my friend

it is up to the U.S.

A US diplomat said, if the US dont defend the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan etc. THEY WILL LOSE FACE.

THE WORLD WILL SEE THAT AMERICA IS INFERIOR

The U.S. can't afford that

as it will show AMERICAN POWER IN DELCINE

IT WILL BE A DOMINO EFFECT

Other countries with treaties with AMERICA will start to "DOUBT"

the US has to defend the Philippines, otherwise IT WILL LOSE FACE.
