Communist Party Congress: China's event of the decade fails to stifle the yawns
It may be the defining political event of the decade, unveiling the men who will steer China to become the world's most powerful country. But there were more than a few stifled yawns inside the Great Hall of the People.

But who could blame the 2,268 delegates? When they reached their seats, they were given copies of Hu Jintao's speech in advance.

Its title: "Firmly march on the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics and strive to complete the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects".

Some of the delegates may have felt nostalgic for Mr Hu's speech five years ago at the last Party Congress.

Its title: "Hold high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics and strive for new victories in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects".

Stretchers were on hand as an emergency measure; a few of the cadres were in wheelchairs, 86-year-old former president Jiang Zemin had to lean on the arm of an aide, and the oldest delegate to the Congress was 97.

Security being tight, the stretchers had been carefully inspected for explosives. Outside, Tiananmen Square was once again closed to the public.

Rows of security officers in camouflage marched back and forth. In one column, every man carried a riot shield and baton except for one officer who was entrusted with a big pink Thermos for the tea.

This was Mr Hu's penultimate speech as China's paramount leader but in a concession to the effects of his oratory, he promised not to read out the entire text. Instead, he only spoke for just shy of two hours.

"We must uphold the leadership of the Party," he said. "We must strive for common prosperity". "We must continue to release and develop the productive forces".

"Developing socialism with Chinese characteristics is a long-term arduous task of historic importance and we must be prepared to carry out a great struggle with many new historical features," he intoned, gravely.

At one point, Mr Jiang, who is still wields formidable power in the Party, was seen picking his nose. Then, he rubbed his eyes.

Then he began carefully examining the pencils on the desk in front of him and flicking through his text to find out how much he still had to sit through.

Meanwhile, Mr Hu's successor, Xi Jinping, was furiously scribbling into his copy of the text, perhaps in a bid to keep focused.

Everyone else in the Great Hall spent their time trying to scrutinise the seating plan for clues about the leadership change.

Wang Yang, who has been seen as a reformist, was seated out on the margins.

Ling Jihua, one of Mr Hu's trusted aides, whose career seems to have taken a knock after his son crashed his Ferrari with two Tibetan women inside, was relegated to the very end of the row.

Wu Bangguo, the current head of the Chinese parliament, seemed to have ignored the dress code: he was the only one on the top table not to be wearing a blood-red tie. He went for blue.

As the elderly cadres gently nodded off, a carefully choreographed ballet unfolded, as attendants moved gracefully down the aisles in unison, pouring cups of reviving green tea.

And then with a final cry "Let us make joint efforts to create an even brighter future for the Chinese people and nation!" - it was over.

For a large hall, it emptied quickly. Delegates raced past clusters of journalists, trying to make sense of it all.

Even MASS-MURDERS are apparently bored to tears by the FAKE CONGRESS needed to "swindle the people" of China!

It shows a continuance. The 96 years old folks who served with Mao are still attending today's meeting, across 5 generations of Chinese leadership.

Yes, the Stalinist "cult of personality" poems in praise of the Chinese Communist Party murderers at this FAKE "congress" is like something from the 1930's USSR, and tragic for China, BUT SO FUNNY FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD!

Whatever you mumble, it works ! China is sufficient in everything.
No country including the US dare not to attack China. China is progressing everyday, building its infrastructure to be the best in the 21st Century, trading with all countries in the world.
Lifted about 400 million people from abject poverty, successfully retained a stable growth each year. Now, Chinese ships and its navy are roaming high seas, to trade with faraway countries, and also keeping the security of sailing in areas infested with pirates.
Your low quality comments are rubbish.

China is dependent on Wal-Mart, nobody cares to attack China because the regime needs to keep all weapons pointed at its own people, the infrastructure is crap due to CCP corruption, Canada was patrolling for "pirates" YEARS BEFORE WEAK CCP CHINA, and your shabby Communist Party lies are a betrayal of China and the Chinese people!

You LOVE the Chinese Communist Party and its lies, as it must be profitable for you, but YOU ARE CLEARLY A HATER OF THE CHINESE PEOPLE you CCP scum enslave!

See? Your comments are all lies paid for by your CCP masters.

You're welcome!
