....
Ultimately China, the Chinese government and the Chinese people, will determine the level and scope of the rights and freedoms to be enjoyed. We in the West can support dialogue and offer encouragement. We can certainly continue to hold China to account for the promises it has made – and, in particular, the promise of the Beijing Olympics officials that the games would be "an opportunity to foster democracy, improve human rights, and integrate China with the rest of the world". But equally, I believe, we have a duty to inform ourselves of what is actually happening in China - rather than relying on alarmist knee jerk reactions to China’s growing role – political as well as economic - on the international stage.

Sorry for your brain, Chine Gov't overwrite the Chinese peoples, they can not vote to represent their voice, when they want to raise their voice as the earth quake victims did, jail times.

A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.

Why do some people feel the need to make stuff up and put it in the mouth of a dead person?

Democracy is the most vile form of government... democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention: have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property: and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.-- James Madison

“Every sincere break with Communism is a religious experience, though the Communists fail to identify its true nature, though he fail to go to the end of the experience. His break is the political expression of the perpetual need of the soul whose first faint stirring he has felt within him, years, months or days before he breaks. A Communist breaks because he must choose at last between irreconcilable opposites — God or Man, Soul or Mind, Freedom or Communism.”

Nice quote, I bet I can find some good ones on the inter net too.

A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.
Thomas Jefferson

How about this one?

“I do not believe in Communism any more than you do but there is nothing wrong with the Communists in this country; several of the best friends I have got are Communists”

Franklin D. Roosevelt

guess what, your living in a communist country according to the quote below:

“Socialism is the same as Communism, only better English”

George Bernard Shaw

So what does quotes prove? Nothing, they are just some random guy's radnom spur of the moment one liner that someone thought sounded cool and full of "wisdom".

Communism/democracy, socialism/conservatism, left wing/right wing........

I usually go for the left wing but only because it's the right wing.

Sometimes I think that the only difference between fascists and communists is that the facists have smarter uniforms. Kind of makes you proud to be lined up and shot by soldiers in such snappy outfits.

I laugh at those political debate. I'm Chinese from Beijing. We never argue these issue these days. Only talking about how fast we can progress and improve our life. Whatever it take, like last post said: communism/democracy, socialism/conservatism, left wing/right wing. I'm surprised how much open mind we have, not like you guys stamp everything with particular political name, just like some id-t said: either on my side or enemy side. China is so complex now. Even Chinese people get confused. It's a big lab in sociology. Full of new excited challenges. It will go on her own pace not any pressure from outsider. I'm so convinced. That's the conclusion from my recent vacation in Beijing.

..."hey, why even bother brushing your teeth? Toothbrush is just invention of Capitalist running dogs! I've grown quite accustomed to the infection that my dentist teases from my gums. Why waste your RMB on toothbrushes when I've got my own free dentist! Gargle with tea! It does a sorta' good job!"

I am from Vietnam, peopples from Communist country try to flee out to West for freedom by any which ways they can, hang on ship anchor's rope , by boat, sneak into containers, etc. When they are in freedom land, can obtain a Visa and flight back home and smile :)

I do sense reverberations coming from China that many of them yearn for more freedom, truth, flexibility etc.

While there is this rabid nationalism among many in China I also sense that many Chinese are coming more to realize that they have been duped by CCP, that CCP has lied to them in many ways, etc.

Still living in 1976 ic. You realize Chinese from China are taking tours in Disneyland right? Students are studying in the West but going home after they are done. Same with the West, people study abroad in China and return to the west and taking vacations in China. Welcome to the 21st centur.

I agree. The sooner the Chinese people start using Mao Zedong's little red book of quotations for toilet paper, the better!
