BEIJING/TAIPEI - The spokesman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office on Thursday strongly condemned the reported fatal shooting of a Taiwan fisherman by the Filipino military.

China demands the Philippines investigate the incident thoroughly and swiftly, Yang Yi said, labeling the shooting "barbaric".

"We are in deep mourning over the fisherman's death and express condolence over the shooting," Yang said.

According to the island's fishing authority and media reports, a Taiwan fisherman was shot dead on Thursday morning when a Filipino military ship opened fire on a Taiwan fishing boat.

The shooting occurred around 10 am in a sea area some 180 nautical miles southeast of Erluanbi, the southernmost tip of the island of Taiwan, said Tsay Tzu-yaw, deputy head of Taiwan's fishery administration, earlier.

According to media reports, after killing the fisherman, the Filipino military ship continued to chase and fire in bursts at the Taiwan vessel.

It escaped danger only after fleeing for more than an hour, with equipment onboard severely damaged, according to reports carried by Taiwan media outlets.Tsay said the Taiwan boat lost its power shortly after that point.

Following the crew radioing for help, he added, certain boats came to assist the fishing vessel, which is expected to return to Taiwan on Friday. The island's marine patrol authority will also send vessels to help, according to Tsay.

It is unknown why the Filipino military ship opened fire, he said.

Use your submarines to protect your fishermen. Sink any ship that fire on your fishermen. Talk and investigate is a waste of time.

For a strong nation like the US use tag-boats to push them out of your waters as in the USS Impeccable.

For a banana republic, use submarines. Sink them!

That's tragic. A terrible precedent has been set by the Philippines. I guess its open season to shoot and kill Filipino fishermen. Only good thing is these Filipina widows might become prostitutes.

Watch out Taiwan, you have lots of hostages in the Philippines, and that country is denying any involvement in the incident.

I find it ridiculous that some Hispanic is turning into a Taiwanese shoe-shine boy, despite all those "cultural links" between Philippines and Spain. Now that is really silly.

Several years ago the best soldier of the U.S. Army turned out to be a Filipino.

As I pointed out before...

The Pinoy naval boats as well as the Vietnamese naval vessels are much too aggressive compared with those from China CMS.

That was what our Malaysian Naval Officers said.
They have been shooting at the water around our patrol ships.

It was only because of the discipline and tolerance of our naval personnel that averted an incident or a shooting match.

Yeah, this numbnut blames everyone but themselves. Hopefully our govt will have the nuts to retaliate. I think a protest at the capital should push our govt along.

And you people don't? LOL Try clean up your own house first.

"Citing records of a joint monitoring program of the UNICEF and World Health Organization (WHO) for 2012, Michael Emerson Gnilo, a specialist for the UNICEF Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, noted that of these 26 million individuals, 7.4 million are still “openly defecating.”
“In the Philippines, there’s still about 30 percent of the population that don’t have access to sanitary toilets."

I really don't expect more from Filipinos. There are so many Filipina prostitutes because way too many Filipinos aren't even responsible enough to care for their own children. Don't deny it pare. Admission is the first step to recovery.

now you are scare , admit the fact that pinoy is a barbaric nation.

under international law, your military police can not shoot machine gun and shoot dead a civilian un-arm fisherman, it is a violation of international law.

now your country government must end the illegal occupation of kalayaan. under treaty of paris, philippines sovereignty does not include kalayaan, the barbaric pinoy invade China territory and occupy it illegally.

I have serious doubts Filipinos did it.

Probably the Taiwanese fishermen had some sort of a fight between themselves on board of their fishing vessel, one of them gets killed, and then the whole incident is invented to cover up their own killing.

Philippine government has already stated that it had no vessels of any sort in the area at that time.

Ignorance is no bliss. Have you not watch the tv where phillipino ministers admitted and expressed "sorry" for this gross violation of fisherman's right to fish in international water? This is a serious matter.

Irresponsibility and the habit of denying reality are character flaws of the Filipino people. In some ways, these traits are psychological defense mechanisms that allow them to cope with the fact that they are pretty much corrupt, powerless and useless. They subconsciously feel that they don't have much to be proud about so they take extreme national pride in trivial matters. A non-trivial accomplishment that they actually should take great pride in is the success and popularity of Filipina prostitutes. I do my best to support this industry and market it whenever I can.
