China's Huawei Unveils World's Fastest Smartphone

China’s Huawei is making a bid to claim its share of attention as the world’s third-largest smartphone company with a new phone it’s calling “the fastest smartphone in the world”.

Its new Ascend P2 with a 4.7-inch screen will be available during the second quarter for about $525 without a contract, said Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s consumer business group. Its claim to being the world’s fastest smartphone is based on its ability to support faster downloads than other phones — or provided by today’s wireless networks.

The Ascend P2 can be programmed to display more than 100 different themes which is important because “ladies like flowers, colorful things,” said Yu.

He added that Huawei is learning from Apple how to make Google’s Android software easier to use — a statement that seems unwise given the litigation initiated by Apple against Samsung and other smartphone makers for allegedly infringing Apple design and technology patents.

During the fourth quarter of 2012 Huawei Technologies moved up to become the world’s third largest seller of smartphones, after Samsung and Apple, according to research firm IDC. That status is based mostly on its success in China which has about 50% more mobile phone users than the US.

So far Huawei sells few phones in the US, in part because of last October’s report by a congressional panel urging carrier to avoid selling Huawei phones because they may contain code that could give China’s spy agencies backdoor access to their communications. Both Huawei and Beijing objected strenuously, saying the report’s conclusions are based on self-serving and paranoid conjecture rather than any basis in reality.

So far only a few second-tier US mobile services have begun selling Huawei phones. In Europe and elsewhere, however, Huawei phones and routers are winning rapid acceptance.

“It has not been an easy journey for us,” said Huawei global brand director Amy Lou Sunday in Barcelona ahead of Monday’s opening of Mobile World Congress, the world’s largest trade show for the mobile phone industry. Huawei is “a great consumer brand in the making,” she said.

Huawei is China’s largest telecom equipment maker and the second largest in the world to only Cisco.

That's not what the Western media says. Japan has the fastest computer now and America will come up with a faster one soon.
