Beijing Says Obama Snubbed Abe Bid for Clear Backing on Islets Dispute

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe failed to win explicit support from President Obama during their meeting Friday for Japan’s claim to the Senkakus (Diaoyudao) in its dispute with China, reported China’s official media.

“Abe failed to deliver on his major bid to solicit explicit support over the territorial spat with China, as Washington weighed between a desire to enhance traditional ties with Tokyo against a growing need to cultivate healthy relations with Beijing,” reported Xinhua in its analysis of Abe’s visit.

“Washington this time intentionally played down the issue, refraining from clearly throwing its support behind Tokyo,” it added.

The outcome of the meeting with Obama was “contrary to Abe’s great hope of showing off the ‘robust’ U.S.-Japan alliance and prodding the U.S. into taking Japan’s side in its spiraling dispute with neighboring China over the Diaoyu Islands,” reported Xinhua.

In brief remarks following his meeting with Abe, Obama avoided mention of the territorial dispute, noted Xinhua. But it acknowledged that,“[President Obama] did reiterate the U.S.-Japan alliance was the ‘central foundation for our regional security and so much of what we do in the Pacific region.’”

Xihua even went so far as to suggest that Abe’s demeanor “was somewhat restrained by Washington’s snub,” saying that it contrasted sharply with the “aggressive and rash statements” he had made before leaving Tokyo.

Obama’s conduct “manifested the U.S. attempts to strike a tricky balance” and revealed that Washington “hated seeing its highly interwoven ties with Beijing damaged by Japan’s rash behavior,” the Xinhua report concluded.

In fact, mulling the need to take action on N. Korea’s recent nuclear test, which will likely require Beijing’s implicit cooperation, Obama is understandably reluctant to inject the US into regional tensions that are unlikely to be resolved through bravado or tough talk.

Not really in favour of China.

But why should USA endorse Mr. Abe's right-wing approaches?

Would USA send its young men to die for Japan's new militarist motives?

Obama hasn't forgotten the war crimes Japan has committed during WW2 against Asian people and POWs of the allies.

They know Abe, leader of neo-militarism of Japan, is a stern supporter of their war criminal ancestors.

Abe is one of the many right-wing leaders who refuse to admit Japan's war crimes, but continue to worship the war criminals.
