The ship is stranded about 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart, the capital of Australia's Tasmania state. Australian maritime authorities have overall responsibility for the rescue operation because the ship is trapped in an area that falls within the country's Antarctic search-and-rescue zone.

In addition to research team leader Mr. Turney, other scientists come from a range of disciplines, including marine ecology, terrestrial ecology, ornithology and oceanography.

Pack ice, solid sheets of ice up to several meters thick, is a major hazard for vessels navigating the harsh Antarctic, where temperatures can fall to below minus 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

In 1985, the Nella Dan, an Australian research vessel, was trapped for 48 days in the Antarctic. A year later, the Southern Quest, carrying a British expedition, was crushed by ice and sank.

More recently, in 2010 icebreakers had to be used to free nearly 1,000 people whose ferry was among dozens of vessels trapped by ice in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Sweden.

If USA was serious about rescue those poor souls, they should have dispatched their ICEBREAKER back then in December 2013.
It was only when they heard that the Chinese XueLong Polar Ship was also trapped that they decided to STEAL THE THUNDER from others despite the fact neither China nor Russia has issue any SOS.
So USA has lost her golden opportunity for a great publicity stunt and all the nations that were involved including Australia and NZ knew just exactly what USA was trying to do!
Well-said. The Chinese emerged as the hero. Those 52 passengers rescued by the Chinese know whom to thank.

almost got these 52 poor souls killed in the process of their rescue???
That is very dramatic and interesting but most unfortunately for LIAR like you, many of us not only read the news but have also watch the video clips of the rescue.
Next time, you wanted to tell a lies, do us a favor, write something credulous. Nobody is interested in your biased remark based on RACISM.
The only ego dick anywhere around today is you as you wrote it!
Off course, unlike the victims you have nothing to be grateful about but continue to show your scorn to the angelic folks that assisted those in time of distress.
Trust me, you will be experiencing your own predicament and crisis very soon. That is how the almighty make askew people like you understand the real plight of those in distress.
Almost killed by getting them stuck on a ship that obviously didn't have adequate food and medicines for 2 crews. They were better off in their own vessle, the Russians that is.

eh, you got that wrong again, the Russian, Australian and Chinese ships all have enough provisions for months. Only Chinese has the helicopter to do something and the Russian vessel was leased with scientists from several nations, read the news report please. No one needs the Americans, but they were all too keen for a free publicity. Better luck next time Captain America.

Whatever captain Rice paddy, the ship was still a badly made probably obsolete Russian cruser that got stuck captained by the Russians, DUH. You think when you lease a plane or ship that you get to fly it or sail it? Dumb Chinese, do you know anything? That is honestly why I always disagree about you being the smartest race, I even disagree that you are smart at all.

Publicity? The Chinese turn this fiasco into the biggest world wide PR stunt ever made over what was supposed to be a simple rescue. China to the rescue, China's ship has a freaking helicopter the Russian and Australian ship does, FCUK OFF

Oh and China needs the yanks more than anybody, remember when QE was supposed to be ended last year how much that simple news wreaked havoc on your economy, the Indoesians, Indians, Africans and every single other developing country? Don't you remember that the Chinese were a failing state until Nixon visited?

For you to say that no one needs America is to say that you don't know exactly what America is and what its role in the world in the world is.

Eh, you got it out of context again. I am referring to no one, Australian, chinese and international scientists needed captain America to come to the rescue in Antarctica, not QE. Perhaps you feel more easy going back to your comfort zone of economy, but please check the figures you quote.
Yes, I agree with you, scaling down QE does have an impact on developing nations, in particular the fragile 5, which does not include China. Nevertheless the impact can still be felt in China, no doubt about it. Just that I feel China has enough tools and margin to engineer an exit much better than fragile 5. Indeed this could be a catalyst for all emerging markets to steer their dependency on America.
And please don't mention that Watergate Nixon again, he was forced to step down after the hand shake and embarrassed by a British interviewer in front of the entire world. If you really want to, early Taiwan investors were really the one who helped China massively and I witnessed the transformation myself.

Excuse mister can't under what FDI is no matter how many times I explain it to you, dummy dummy dummy, and instead of arguing with me with your own facts you paste stuff up that completely has nothing to do with your arguement and yet you too stupid to realize this and accuss me of getting the Antarctica ship's nationality.

And with the simple math you keep talking about because you have problems understanding the context of what exactly I was talking about because your tiny chimp brain can not fathom what human brains can in 0.0000000001 seconds.

And stop throwing shiet at everyone who comes too close to your cage you stupid ape.

I see probably because your battle cry "NO ONE NEEDS AMERICA" was a touch too strong and emotional. But as for Nixon he is greatly undermined because of the watergate issue, no other US prsident could have done that landmark visit and Nixon also established plans for a permanent U.S. trade mission in China and normalizing the relations between Taiwan and China hence enabling all these Taiwanese investors you talk so fondly about to come and invest in China and export goods and services to the US and Europe.

He is responsible for your country's current economic health, don't forget that back in 1972, China was still in the "cultural revolution" mood and hadn't opened up yet. After returning from China, President Nixon explained to a group of Congressional leaders, in the Cabinet Room of the White House, the importance of restoring communication with China as a way of mitigating suspicion and miscalculation, which could lead to war.

Nixon's China visit benefited world peace, stability, development and prosperity. Nixon was a trail-blazer who would try things his predecessors were unwilling to do. Forty years after the normalization of bilateral ties, China and the United States have become major trading partners to each other.

That to me should make him a Chinese hero or even god.

Of all the detailed explanations I gave of what the difference between FDI and Hot money is, how the Chinese anti ballistic missile is already not such a big threat to the US fleet, prediction of the slower Chinese growth over the years and yet you find this statement on historical fact professional?

Was every other professional thing I have been saying on this site all wasted on you? Are they so smart that to you its just greek? Or is it that you have low standards?
