South China sea means the sea is South of China. An analogy would be "South Indian Ocean". Any thing south of India doesn't necessarily belong to India. Example: Sri Lanka

Is there a south Indian ocean? It is called Indian ocean, not north or south, no?

If there is no significant, why those flips are trying to call it differently.

pheakdie is stupid and does not have the ability to read it.

Angela Merkel knowtowed to Xin Jinping of China by giving him a 1735 German-made map of the last Chinese empire.

Why do I say that Merkel brown-nosed Xi?

The map shows that China owned a lot more territories then. Today China is at least 30% smaller.

This 1735 German-made map is evidence of Chinese sovereignty.

The maps shows that Tibet and Xingjiang, and some land west of the current border was part of the Chinese empire in 1735.

Merkel is saying that Germany will support China in territorial issues. She is trying to show her subservience to the new Chinese empire.

That will affect the land claims of Vietnam (mainly in the so-called South China Sea) too because at that time Vietnam was a province of the Chinese empire in the 1600's and 1700's.

When German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave Chinese President Xi Jinping an antique map of his country as a gift during his recent visit to Berlin, she couldn’t have known what a stir it would cause

I think we should give the Victorian map of India to Indian prime minister... That way we can take back almost the whole India. :-). Oh, that includes the Indian ocean.

Mind you, that map of Philippines under treaty of Paris does not include south China sea. Does that mean Philippines has no historical claim over the sea and land mass? Yes..that's it, Philippines can only claim by UNCLOS because it has no ownership before.

Philippines' case is very interesting. It only shows nobody in Philippines understands the law.

Once again, I'd like to call upon some Chinese and Filipino friends here who've been debating on who is the rightful owner of Scarborough Shoal (a.k.a Huangyan Island).

Both sides made a list of points, such as a map not available online, a law leading to different interpretation, or a map with 9 dashed lines... None of these is convincing enough.

Evidence, if solid, doesn't have to be a lot. And ideally from a third party.

There are two pieces of information not from the parties interested:

- According to Wikipedia, Scarborough Shoal is located at 15°11'N 117°46'E;

- A map kept at University of Texas shows that the Treaty Limits of the Philippines are as far as 118° with a solid line. This is one of the maps from Series S501, U.S. Army Map Service. Following is the link (take a look at legend at the bottom of the map):

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/ams/philippine...

Who is the rightful owner of Scarborough Shoal? Philippines are definitely out as the map indicates that China owns that zone. Either PRC or ROC should claim it.

I see that envy the Indians because of the ocean is called "Indian ocean" and not "south Indian ocean". But it's better late and never, you can always apply for Indian citizenship. No ?

Actually Colombo ocean sounds nicer, Columbus was supposed to look for india to colonise, no? Or Sri Lanka ocean is more appropriate, since it is nearer to the ocean. No, I don't mean I want Sri Lanka citizenship.

Indian citizen? No thanks, I nod my head to mean yes, not shake my head. Also I don't rape, by British law that is illegal. Now you see, after so many years under British rules, you people still don't know rape is illegal. We can give you a Victorian map and India can come under British rule again, to restore law and order. Get a Gandhi to do the walk, and we may consider setting you free.

does it really matter?

after what Russia just did with the Crimea...

and looked for Chinese support in its actions

one need only a 90 IQ to understand the implications it has with China and its neighbours

Angela should edit the map to make it smaller before giving it to Xi.
