White, Asian students dominate city's top middle schools with black, Latino students left out
The revelation comes on the heels of an NAACP complaint filed last month over racial disparities at elite city high schools, such as Stuyvesant and Bronx Science. They have just a tiny percentage of black and Latino students.
They're the best public middle schools in the city — and they’re overwhelmingly and increasingly white and Asian, an exclusive Daily News analysis found.
The revelation comes on the heels of an NAACP complaint filed last month over racial disparities at elite city high schools, such as Stuyvesant and Bronx Science. They have just a tiny percentage of black and Latino students.
It is much the same at the top middle schools. For example, at the Anderson School in Manhattan, a gifted program that has the best test scores in the city, only 17% of the 569 students are black or Latino.
At Mark Twain in Brooklyn, which has its own admissions exam, again 17% of 1,281 students are black or Latino.
Across the city, the vast majority of middle school students — just over 70%— are black or Latino.
But when The News looked at high-performing nonzoned middle schools, meaning magnet programs that draw kids from throughout the city, a borough or a school district, black and Latino kids were in the minority.
At the 10 nonzoned schools whose kids produced the city’s highest scores, just one in four students are black or Latino, according to city data.
“There are significant inequities in the quality of education and certainly the outcomes for students of color in the city’s middle schools,” said Damon Hewitt, director of the education practice at the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund.
The NAACP argued in its complaint about high schools with the U.S. Department of Education that some specialized high schools exclude minorities by using a single discriminatory exam. The middle schools each have their own criteria.
At the coveted Anderson School on the upper West Side, most kids get in by showing their stuff at age 4 when they take a test to qualify for the gifted school’s kindergarten program. Mark Twain screens kids based on a wide range of talents for its sixth- through eighth-grade program.
Richard Hyndes’ 7-year-old daughter just transferred into the second grade at the school.
“Where she was before”— PS 31 in the Bronx —“is all Latino and black,” Hyndes said.“That’s not the world. Where she is now is mostly white and Asian. That’s not the world either.”
Schools spokeswoman Erin Hughes noted the city’s top 25 middle schools are more diverse, with student bodies that are 39% black and Latino.“Our administration has worked to give all students access to higher quality education,” she said.

You mean East Asians are becoming 1st class citizens in the U.S.. This is due to the "big picture": "Made in China" becomes "Own by China."

In 2014, China becomes the world's largest importer. It's then "Made for China."

Two parent homes where studying and homework are mandatory requirements, not hanging out in gangs, not spending time doing or dealing drugs, an attempt to learn the culture and the language of America, etc, etc, etc. You think that makes a difference? You think that is why the Whites and Asians dominate the top schools and attain the highest scores? If you don't think those prerequisites are important, no wonder your kids are so dumb. When I was growing up, getting good grades was a challenge; now good grades are subject to ridicule by the dummies who rule the streets. Ladies and Gentlemen: you are witnessing the "dumbing" of America, the result of unchecked immigration and generations of welfare recipients. Unfortunately, this type of message doesn't hit home since most of the families to whom this applies can't read in the first place. Most of them have no interaction with society, even using bookies or drug dealers to cash their welfare checks. I'm sure the liberals will bash me for statements like this, but somebody has to start waking the rest of us up-this country will eventually collapse from within...too many people want the "goodies" and there are not enough of us workers to sustain their laziness and stupidity. Pretty much every study done to date shows that Asian and European countries not only dominate but are exclusive at the top of IQ testing surveys. America's old immigration saying should have been:"Send us your masses, not your dumb a++es"

"The black and latino students who didn't get in to the elite schools should stop blaming everyone for their problems and instead blame

themselves and their parents lack of involvement. Do you know why white and asian students excel? Its because they SACRIFICE their free

time to STUDY and they have PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT tutoring and helping them. Meanwhile most black and latino students spend their free

time HANGING OUT, NOT STUDYING, have NO PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT (or some don't care), getting into trouble, aspiring to be a

rapper/musician. I saw this day in day out in the neighborhoods that were near me where I grew up. If you want to get in, all you have

to do is STUDY instead of wasting your time hanging out trying to be cool."

"Although I find this article disturbing. I also find it disturbing how blacks and latinos are always trying to get into a predominately white school. Why? We can create our own schools and have grades that are just as good, produce students who can create their own paths to success.

The problem starts at home sometimes, it also starts with the student. Some students come from good homes, yet, they refuse to lean because it is not cool. Erase that ignorance and create a pic of achievement.

Blacks and hispanics with degrees are having a hard time finding employment. I have a bachelors and a masters, yet I have a hard time finding employment. Whites on the other hand, are not having such a hard time. Not being racist, just stating facts!!!"

"The title of this story is absolutely racist. Hispanics and Black are not being intentionally left out, as they are not good enough to get in. You need to do the work and get the grades to get in to these schools and color has nothing to do with it."

"Blacks and Latino's are left out of these schools because the majority just aren't smart enough or do not apply themselves. It is a fact that Asians in particular are smarter and apply themselves more in school than other minorities. FACT!"
