Top Test Scores From Shanghai Stun Educators
By SAM DILLON

With China’s debut in international standardized testing, students in Shanghai have surprised experts by outscoring their counterparts in dozens of other countries, in reading as well as in math and science, according to the results of a respected exam.

Pupils studying English at a school in Shanghai, a city that has become a magnet for many of the best students in China.

Western Nations React to Poor Education Results (December 9, 2010)
American officials and Europeans involved in administering the test in about 65 countries acknowledged that the scores from Shanghai — an industrial powerhouse with some 20 million residents and scores of modern universities that is a magnet for the best students in the country — are by no means representative of all of China.

About 5,100 15-year-olds in Shanghai were chosen as a representative cross-section of students in that city. In the United States, a similar number of students from across the country were selected as a representative sample for the test.

Experts noted the obvious difficulty of using a standardized test to compare countries and cities of vastly different sizes. Even so, they said the stellar academic performance of students in Shanghai was noteworthy, and another sign of China’s rapid modernization.

The results also appeared to reflect the culture of education there, including greater emphasis on teacher training and more time spent on studying rather than extracurricular activities like sports.

“Wow, I’m kind of stunned, I’m thinking Sputnik,” said Chester E. Finn Jr., who served in President Ronald Reagan’s Department of Education, referring to the groundbreaking Soviet satellite launching. Mr. Finn, who has visited schools all across China, said,“I’ve seen how relentless the Chinese are at accomplishing goals, and if they can do this in Shanghai in 2009, they can do it in 10 cities in 2019, and in 50 cities by 2029.”

You pro-Chinese creeps are so funny. You've been posting this same article for over a year now so why not let it rest? Those Shiang Hai kids are a select group and the study religiously because Chinese academics is extremely competitive and they are under extreme pressure to excel and their parents are very strict concerning their academic performance. On the other hand, American kids have become unmotivated and lazy and don't care about academic performance anymore. And don't forget that the communist system of education cannot be overlooked. Think about the Russians during the Soviet Union days. They were studied at the age of 3 or so and if they showed any special talents at the age of 3 they were GROOMED to enter a profession that utilized their talents. That's why the Soviets were so dangerous back then. They had some of the best engineers, scientists, mathematicians, etc, in the whole world and the Chinese students used to flock to Moscow and St Petersburg in droves in hopes of learning why the white Russians were so smart and good at what they were doing.

You're trying to make a racial issue out of this but there is very little difference between a white guy and a Chinese guy academically if both of them study very hard altho I would give the white guy a slight advantage because of creativity and other critical thinking skills.

It's not a racial issue but a cultural one. Chinese parents make sure their kids study hard. American parents (whites and blacks) have different things going on.

Wait, wait, what do you loser say? Chinese contribute significantly to the US. Most of the US best computer science departments are fill of Chinese engineers that in turn write papers, and patent for American companies. You got some very nerve. Most of science competitions(regional, or international) are dominate by Chinese Americans, or Chinese. You mean to tell me those Chinese don 't help the US, and the west? Are you some fucking redneck, or what?

Indians are troublemakers and prone to criminal mischief when young. Gang activity, robbing and stealing, bullying are mainstays of their lives.

Look at Ravi, the gay Indian Rutgers student who was sentenced to jail because of his crimes of bullying, invasion of privacy, intimidation and the rest.

That's not an Indian thing. It's an irresponsible youth thing.
