Dalai Lama must have learned the concept from library study!

I went to a Chapters bookstore recently. I found several books authored by Dalai Lama about compassion and how to become compassionate.
I was told that his old Tibet was really a miserable place in which 90% or more of the people were slaves and serfs who had no control of their own life and destiny. They were treated inhumanely by the aristocracy of theocratic Tibet. They were taxed extremely heavily and could be sold like cattle.
I can't find anything compassionate under such as system. Perhaps the wealthy overlords were really compassionate toward their spouses and little daughters. That was good, but only good to a small number of people.
Dalai Lama must have learned all these nice concepts while travelling in Europe or North American where he can get a library card to access the major libraries.
We also know that he was kicked out of Tibet after his slaves and serfs rose up to abolish the inhumane theorcray system in 1959.
So what he says remains at the level of theories without any chance for execution in reality.
