There are 7 comments on the Matangi Tonga story from Dec 9, 2012, titled King opens new Vuna Wharf for cruise ships. In it, Matangi Tonga reports that:

The long-awaited opening of the new wharf is expected to help drive the economy forward by attracting more cruise ships to Nuku'alofa. The projects built with the reconstruction loan from China were handed over to the Government of Tonga in August 2012, but the opening of the wharf was delayed.

I wont lie, it looks really nice, especially cruising down the main road nuku'alofa and a shiny white side of a cruise ship catches your eye down the road.

Its nice, but was it worth the expense? 30 million ouch, the short - tax payers will need to pick that up from some other poor, underdeveloped sector of the stagnating economy, through taxes of course.

Lets hope it does better than we expect

@Fungafonua

I agree with what you suggest on the policies. We need a Budget surplus to start paying off the national debt, AND to invest in sporting infrastructure because passion to host the next Pacific games seems to have eclipsed any thoughts of how we are going to pay for it, in these times.

Lets hope Governments expectations of 'investors' that will invest in the infrastructure for the games are not as unrealistic as the 100-200 cruise ships forcasted to stop by Tonga.
