China second only to US in scientific research Chinese researchers have more than doubled their output of scientific papers and now are second only to the United States in terms of volume, according to a report from Thomson Reuters released on Monday. The research is heavily focused on materials and technology and shows China is poised to dominate several areas of industry, the report finds. "China's comparative growth is striking, far outstripping that of the rest of the world," reads the report, available here "And the curve seems to be showing only marginal signs of slowing, still heading to overtake the USA itself within the next decade." more at: http://ceconomy.blogspot.com/

I am aware that a lot of chinese students opt for studying overseas. I think the figure at the moment is 4,50,000 this year. My question is ...is it because of the quality of education in china, or is it because of the global job opportunities overseas and the desire to immigrate that chinese student opt for overseas universities?

Yes. Admission to Govt Medical Colleges in India is a tough thing, and few bright guys qualify for it. Thats mainly cuz the number of seats is very less. The next category is Private run medical colleges, which are equally good but very expensive...and not affordable to most students. These are the students who are looking at chinese medical universities. I have heard about some issues with chinese medical education, and Medical Council of India has debarred students from these universities from practising in India. I do not know the specifics though.

Yes, the quality of Education in China is very bad, most of guraduates havent corresponding capability for their jobs. and the firms have to spend months to train them before put them to work. Compared to India, an IT engineer might just need 12 months special training, but in China, the firms might need to hire a computer bachelor. Because of the badly quality, plenty of rich students go abroad to take their colleage education. the reason why Chinese colleage education go downhill is Education Industrilization.

Yes, Chinese medicine education is very strict. Chinese medicine students have a lot of chances to practice, especially for nurse. and the charge is cheaper than USA, so lots of indian students been here.

Thanks for the insight. I wonder why china cannot invest in education like it did in other sectors and improve the quality of education? It's going to be a long process, unlike setting up a mass manufacturing plant - but it can be done.

You mean "Commercialization" of Education, as in "Making MONEY."

Massive investment have been put into Education sector in the past 10 years, especially colleage education. The reasons why China cannot improve the quality of education is rather complicated. Though the investment brought a lots of Research Funding, new equipments, improved the wage of teachers and scientist, most of colleages expanded its enrollment and build lots of new buildings. But it is not helpful the improve the quality of educations, by contrary, lots of money been wasted because of bureaucracy and corruption. It's still not the worst thing. The China's education has been in a astray. Bureaucracy and corruption of the colleage administer is the one of two major reasons. Another is Education Commercialization.

China is number one in scientific research now, trust me with the wars in two different countries we have almost zero money for research. I am a scientist I know, grants are very hard to come by.

Today, the "hardware" has improved, due to massive building construction. It's just a matter of fixing the "software" (quality of education) now, which will take much longer.

In China's cities, the elementary, middle, and high school education has always been the same or better than those in U.S. However, it's the university education that lags behind the U.S., which is tops in the world. This is why so many students from China (and around the world) go to university in the U.S.

They're getting the education somewhere - I looked at the biology homework for a 14 year old Chinese friend the other day and not only was it at degree standard but it was in English.
