The Li river valley:
There is no place like that place anyplace! Many foreigners see classical Chinese paintings and assume that the landscapes are purely fanciful---until they arrive in Guilin or Yongshuo and realize that that is a mistaken assumption. There are few sights in China that can match a trip down the Li river; with its limestone mountains, bamboo groves arching gracefully over the river, rafts being poled along the banks, village wharves, little boys and oxen swimming in the river, and beautiful old wooden manors...... it is like a trip back in time. I would strongly encourage foreign travellers to include this exceptional part of the country in their travel plans if they visit China----it is unqualifiedly beautiful and has the full range (for mainland China) of tourist amenities. Backpackers love Yongshuo which is a town geared to their needs, while older travellers seem to prefer the more developed amenities of Guilin----but visit both.
