Cayman Islands apologises to gay visitor

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism has issued an official apology to a man who was detained by police after publicly kissing his boyfriend at a local bar last week. Meanwhile, a full investigation is being launched into the incident, where an off-duty officer took tourist Aaron Chandler (left) to the George Town Police Station after he kissed his boyfriend on the dance floor at a popular Seven Mile Beach bar.

Director of Tourism Pilar Bush subsequently issued an apology for the incident. “I apologise for your upsetting experience and want to assure you that the Cayman Islands is a welcoming jurisdiction to all people,” she wrote to Chandler.

“What happened to you was an isolated incident, and is not representative of Cayman. We know that thousands of gay and lesbian visitors travel to the Cayman Islands every year and enjoy their vacation,” she continued, adding: “I am truly sorry to learn of what you went through during your visit.”

While I don't condone public displays of affection - gay or straight - It seems the apology is a little after the fact. Is it because if gays and lesbians choose another vacation spot, which they should, the Cayman tourism dept can just watch those dollars sail away into the sunset!?

That's a great idea, then us heterosexuals won't have to worry about seeing sick displays of perversion while vacationing at the Cayman Islands. Two thumbs up!

Yep the reality of it is the all mighty dollar. They know if word got around then they have a chance of loosing millions. Hmm what would a boycott look like in America if really the LBGTQ community choose to boycott businesses who support discrimination and fear?

It's obvious that you're clueless and that's a sad side situation in itself. We as G/L/T people have the equal right to be with our partner and to show afffection as you do. It's further obvious that you have absolutly no clue as to the percentage or revenue, tax basis, etc., that we add to the economy no matter where our destination is, even if it's Jamacia. I think that the apology was apropriate and the right thing to do period. You may want to consider some diversity classes and/or empathy classes as you seem to be lacking sorely in the general charactor department.......better yet, I think it would be a safe bet to say that you're more than bankrupt in the department. Do yourself a favor and go purchase a clue.

Again and again and again I think (in support of your comment here; or I should say, in support of the point you're making *to* the previous poster) that all this reasonless anti-gay stuff is the new racism.

Fine, you can have the Cayman Islands, gay people don't want to see bigoted idiots like you while we're vacationing anyway.

If you think you can outrun a bullet from a 9mm, try it. I'm fully able to protect myself from scum like you. Let your children see their daddy get beat down by a queer.

It was a kiss douchebag. Your underwhelming keyboard bravado hints at your ...shortcomings.

It's not anti-gay...it is pro non-perversion.
There is a difference, you just fail to see it.
This has nothing to do with race so that it a silly analogy.
Try vacationing in Iran and kiss your homosexual friend and see how well you fair.

No, I won't "keep it in the closet", and yes, I do carry my weapon with me as I have a permit to do so. It sounds more like you have something to hide, however. What aren't you telling? I would bet money you have your own "wide stance" issues.

I'm not dependent upon your approval for how I live my life, so you can just piss off.

No, I don't have to. You can stay home and hide under your bed so the big bad queers won't offend you.
