OTTAWA–Canada's age of sexual consent will be bumped up two years to 16 beginning Thursday.

The change means adults who have sex with boys or girls aged 14 and 15 years old could face criminal charges.

Canada's age of consent has been 14 since 1892.

The legislation was brought in by the Conservative government in part to deal with older internet predators who troll the web looking for younger victims.

Canada's age of consent will now be in line with other countries, such as Britain and Australia, and most American states.

The intent of the new law is not to criminalize teenage sex, but to crack down on adults who prey on youth, former justice minister Vic Toews said when the bill making the change was introduced.

The law includes a "close-in-age" provision of five years, which means it would be legal for a 15-year-old to have relations with a 19-year-old provided the relationship is not exploitive and the older party is not in a position of authority or trust.

But while all political parties backed the legislation and law officials welcomed it with open arms, several gay rights groups are not satisfied and have said the law ignores gay men.

It is currently illegal for Canadians under 18 to have anal sex, meaning two gay or bisexual 17-year-olds who engage in the act could end up in jail something the new law does not address.

Other groups, such as Justice for Youth and Children, said the new law, if misunderstood, could end up driving teenage sexual activity underground.

This should also serve as a wake up call to parents to pay more attention to what their kids are doing, who they hang out with, be in tune more with your teens. Watch what they are doing on the computer.
Young girls are full of grown up ideas, more so than boys of the same age.

My kids love to hang out with me, even as Teens, son is a teen and he has no problem hanging out with mom, or his friends, and it is because I treat them like young adults, not a nuiscance.
I worked with teens years ago, I was a dance instructor in the eighties, and there was a house next door, that housed troubled teens, they would always be curious about our lessons, practises for shows, etc. So I invited them in one day, and taught them to dance (like the movie with Antonio Banderas)they went and won a dance contest. It was fun to work with them, and given patience and understanding they proved to be good kids. Some went on to have really good lives, and cleaned up their act, and all because someone took the time and interest in them. It is all teens need. Respect and understanding. Tell them they can't..they will.

I also worked on the play Grease at a local high school, I choreographed the dance scenes. That was a lot of fun.
I have now moved to Edmonton, and am going to look into volunteering again with teens. So many are sheltered, or neglected, with no street smarts. I want to help them.
I never sheltered my kids, I did not hide the big bad world from them. Too many parents seem to think they should shelter their kids from the world or the bad things, unknowingly they are not doing the kids any favors, they are only making it worse, so they find out on their own, then that is where problems start.
Parents need to tell their kids what can happen when meeting people from on line.
I also think if parents discussed sex with their kids (because yes they are going to have it, especially if it is made to be taboo, it only makes it more interesting), we would not have to put restrictions like this out there. Talk to them about predators, and why older people chase ones way too young for them.
Also if we made more stronger punishment for those kiddy diddlers, those preying on our youth... like the noose, we could save a lot of headaches and heartaches.
