Myanmar's junta holds referendum despite cyclone crisis

Myanmar's military rulers held a referendum Saturday aimed at solidifying their hold on power while brazenly turning cyclone relief efforts into a propaganda campaign.

How can their gov't refuse aid? It sounds like evil forces are running this gov't and it is the poor people who suffer. I hope food reaches them in time.

Isn't it interesting how the Millitary took the opportunity to draft a new Constitution as well?

aren't we a little thin in the military operations as it is with Iraq?

Why is it that the general public's gut reaction is always "bomb them" not "let's see how we can help them"?

The constitution was already drafted and the vote was planned. They just carried on with plans as though their nation was not in one of the worst disasters ever.

Or Russia, or Germany, or France, or Iran, etc. Why is the U.S. always expected to cover this stuff yet all we get is grief about how much we suck? We should not even respond and when people start pointing fingers say "Where's the E.U, etc." Once again we foot the bill and will get zero gratitude for it.

We the ACLU have no criticism for Myanmar's rulers. Sure, their human rights record is abysmal, but as long as the United States opposes them we'll let them do whatever they want and not say anything. We save our criticism for the U.S. and Israel.

You missed my point... the date of the vote was planed way before the disaster hit. And the military harassing people to vote the way they wanted the vote to go. With the cyclone... nature has helped the junta achieve their goal... so they went along with the vote... to take advantage of the disaster.

Just like New Orleans, the trucks etc. held at the border waiting for the gov and mayor to let them in, but of course, that was Bush's fault!

I'm tired of the US providing aid to other nations. I don't mean to sound like a witch, but we have so many homeless and needy people in the US! We should take care of our own people before we help others. Did you know that TONS of Hurricane Katrina victims are still living in FEMA trailers because the US hasn't given them money. How sad!!

Bush is certainly no angel, however, it is clear that the majority of the blame for the Fiasco after Katrina goes to that loonie Democrat Governor and that worthless Mayor.

Gov Kathleen Blanco was so paranoid of the Feds and Fema that she delayed the aid just as these sicko generals are doing.

Public TV had a great program on Burma/Myanmar last night (May 12).

It's very likely the ultimate head of the Myanmar government isn't even aware of the scope of this disaster. He has created a city/palace refuge in a remote, nearly inaccessible area. People are not even allowed to visit the city without permission from the military rulers -- who, by the way, are very hesitant to deliver bad news to the top honcho. This is a "government" we can not begin to understand. The Burmese/
Myanmar people expect nothing from the government and that's what they are getting. As far as the military caring about the general populace -- not likely. In fact, the lower the population level, the easier it is to maintain tight control.

My heart goes out to all the citizens of Myanmar, but we are not in a position to help them without invading their impoverished little nation. The reports of humanitarian aid supplies be hoarded instead of distributed should be enough to wake us up. Sending food to Myanmar to sit and rot is a dreadful waste.

Why should anyone be surprised at the conduct of the junta? Since most of the populace opposes them, keeping aid from them becomes just another way to reduce the numbers of opponents. We might dream of air-dropping supplies with parachute-equipped rafts. But I'd like to see natural-disaster victims in our own country get real help first. And air-drop some jobs to Americans who are unemployed and desperately want to work and have educations and clean records.

Just knew that these people would steal the goodies. Soon to be sold on their black market. They do not want to help their own.
