Price of imported Thai Jasmin Rice Gone Double in Sydney, Australia?

Last time I bought a 25 kilo bag of Lion brand jasmin rice imported from Thiland the price was just well below one Au$ a kilo. It was just three months ago and yesterday I had to pay well over two Au$ a kilo for a ten kilo bag of same rice of same brand. The usual 25 kilo bags were nowhere to be found.

In the states the rice futures had shot up through US$1000 a ton and many rice exporting countries like Vietnam and Thailand are said to be cutting their rice exports. Authorities in Sirilanka had to ask their people to calm down as 10,000 tones of rice are on their way to Columbo from Burma, of all the countries.

I just hope, maybe in vain, the current rice crisis wouldn't effect the poor and starving people of Burma as I still vividly remember the slaughter of many Chinese families in 1967 during the Ne Win led army created "Race Riots From Rice Riots" in Rangoon's vast Chinatown as Ne Win then falsely and publicly blamed the Chinese wholesale merchants for blatantly hoarding the rice and massively profiteering from the suffering of Burmese people.
