Here's to hoping Gottschalks is purchased by Wal-Mart, the one big box thriving in this economy because it sells products people want and provides better employment pay/hours than our independent stores (you're LUCKY to get 20 hours/week at an independent store).

Please wal-mart bashers, give us your tired old line about how we should be spending 5 times as much at independent stores that sell the same things from the same manufacturers, or worse, more expensive things. Most of this county is poor and cannot afford your hipster shops. We are not all pot growers like you.

Walmart's labor practices are questionable and their product inferior. You get what you pay for when shopping at a low end discount retailer. That might be good enough for some but not all of us want that. Gottschalks has been a good community involved store offering us a great value for the money. The people who work there are always very friendly and are willing to help you. You won't find that at a big box discount store.

I moved from Eureka to Idaho. I live five min away from walmart. And i live in the country. The only thing i don't like is there meat. I just found out how much i like walmart. They were closed for a week because to much snow on the flat roof. Eureka is going down hill. Need something to get things rolling. Home depot is coming to my town. Better than house's. Going to be nice.

Gottschalks bankrupt?? If they close down, the storespace they have now, would make nice digs for some form of firearm emporium, and general mercantile. I say start putting useful stores with good prices in the mall, and they won't be going bankrupt.

I guess that's what happens when they sell $40 sweats that get destroyed in the washing machine. I can't believe they've survived as long as they have. That store sucks.

Just thinking about possible changes at the mall, most are just talk so far, but even after the Bayshore Mall Managers fill in the emply spaces, what about the plans for the Marina Center on the table?

The project Applicant’s objectives for the proposed Marina Center are:
• To maintain Eureka’s status as the “hub” of employment, retail commerce and tourism in
Humboldt County.
– Complement the existing Downtown and Old Town uses.
– Develop an economically viable mixed-use project to include the following
components:
Destination retail (home improvement, sporting goods, apparel, home
electronics and import, for example)
Service retail (pharmacy, banking and financial, hair care, etc.)
Lifestyle retail (fashion, entertainment, jewelry, housewares, books, domestics,
footwear, etc.)
 Offices
 Restaurants
 Children’s Educational Museum
Residential/multi-family to create both lifestyle and live-work opportunities
 Compatible light industrial

Don't let what is happening at Gottschalks, Meryvns, Wal-mart and etc. distract possible considerations being worked on in other parts of the community. There is no quick fix to our local economic situation, but of only a few are developing the plans, than many will be forgotten. Especially when

And with all these store closings, mill closings, and other signs of obvious distress, Humboldt county's median home price is now above the statewide average. So much for this place being cheap. But, that is what you get when you have an endless supply of greedy Boomer retirees moving up here from socal.

Things are sucking around here.
The only people that can afford anything are the ones who made a mint in real estate down south and have moved here to get away from it all. Even the "old money" families from here have second and third homes out of the area so they can escape to places that have vitality. They can't even stand to be here full time or do their shopping here.
This place is in trouble.

Unreal. You are EXCITED about getting a Wal-Mart?

Wow. I always thought the low-class white trash meth user crowd in Eureka was pretty bad, but Good Lord!

NOW you people are WANTING & DEFENDING a Wal-Mart?

If only you could read.

I see. Moving to 'places that have vitality', eh?
Would you care to share just WHERE these magical, mystical places are?(Or does it just 'suck' no matter where you are?)

You really need to learn to read. Read a book, that is. If you cannot read, try watching TV. Watch: "Wallmart- The High Cost of Low Price." If that movie doesn't change your point of view than you're either a Sadist or an Ostrich.

I new firearms store just opened around the first of the year in Eureka, if you are genuinely interested in such things (with this site your comment may have been in jest, you never know). The store is called Sportsmans Choice, and it's in Eureka on Northbound 101 (I can never remember the street name, 5th I think?). It's run by a very nice gentleman named Robert Johnson, and his uncle Dale is often in the store as well. I have already made several purchases there and all have been WAY below retail. Robert is an Arcata native that just moved back from Petaluma, so you're still supporting a local guy.

Seriously. I'ts already been proven those stores ATTRACT both crime and low-income individuals to an area once they have opened. Some people, eh? All they care about is how much money comes out of their wallet RIGHT NOW and not the long-term costs and consequences. Wal-Mart is outright evil (but then again, to a lesser degree, so is Gottschalks).

Believe me, it doesn't suck just everywhere.
Especially if you don't have to lower yourself to go to a Wal-Mart in the first place because you can fly to Arizona or Palm Springs or Redding or your time-share in Mexico.
I'm not singing the praises of Wal-Mart, but I am saying that people here with money spend more getting away from here than they do on the local economy. Not ALL people, mind you....but plenty of them.
People who travel all over think Eureka is the biggest sucking shopping capital of the world.
What really is there to choose from?
