Greener Bele Chere studied

I believe the City of Asheville has a lot more important business to discuss and attend to than a greener Bele Chere.

Watch those carbon footprints out there.

I think since the City isn't paying anything for the study that it is a good idea. The City tends to "consultant" things to the point that even people who were for whatever it is they are studying are sick of hearing about it.

I think it's a great idea and well worth the effort. It's thinking long term effects rather than just for our benefit this minute. It's also something very difficult to achieve in a festival without a great deal of support since most people think about what's easy and convenient in disposing of garbage. You have to make it easy for the public.

Grab your wallet and your ankles when you hear of this green nonsense.

TRASH, ECT...DOES NOT JUST COME FROM THIS EVENT. IN DOWNTOWN AND AREA YOU SEE TRASH 365 DAYS A YEAR. OUR CITY OFFICIALS NEED TO ADDRESS 1 PROBLEM AT A TIME !

Why not make Bele Chere less impactful to the planet? The city needs help, and Seven-Star is doing a great thing for everyone in Asheville (as well as anyone in this watershed/ on the planet/ etc.) by proving this FREE assessment! To all of those cynics out there--- perhaps if you stopped posting to these blogs complaining and started supporting changes and efforts like this, you might see that THIS is the way REAL change occurs. Thank you Seven-Star!!! Now Asheville's citizens should stand behind this effort and demand change!

Personally, I got off my butt this weekend, walked around in the rain, and helped the City and Seven Star this weekend. Correct... it was not free. I met many of the good folks at Seven Star. They spent their energy, gave organic T-shirts to volunteers, and gave away their time and expertise. I saw in them, positive passion for making a difference while doing good work. I learned about their other projects and discovered that positive legacies are gifted to the communities that they touch. No matter what you have to say, on any topic...I'd recommend knowing what you talk about if your opinion is to be worth much. Every one has an opinion and some speak from their A-holes :) I believe that we are lucky to have folks locally who are willing to DO THE WORK. In my years as a citizen, I've met the good, the bad, and the ugly. Too many of us are more inclined to vent and complain about a greener place, the system, etc, but in the end, what legacy are you leaving? Props to all that put in their energy and hard work at the festival! Glad to meet you all at Seven Star.

As stated earlier, anytime you hear the word FREE shortly thereafter you will hear a sucking sound. That will be the sound of $$$$ coming from someone's pocket. Maybe not directly but it will have to be paid by someone. 99% of the time that someone is the taxpayer. So good advise is to follow the money and hold on to your wallet when the word FREE is mentioned.

WLOS reported tonight that 81% of locals don't attend Bele Chere. So most likely, we don't give a dawg about a greener Bele Chere.

As one of the partners of Seven-Star, I would like to add some clarification. If the Bele Cher Board of Directors agrees that professional waste diversion and carbon offsetting services are needed then the project goes out to bid to what ever company is brave enough to go through 100,000 pounds of garbage to sort the recycling Bele Cher visitors are too lazy to separate themselves. The recycled material will be cashed in and it will be up to the city to allocate those dollars.
As members of this community, Seven-Star does not support "jacking" any tax payer base for these services. We have a more elegant way of supporting the 15 Asheville citizens and their families we call employees. Today’s' corporations enjoy paying for environmentally responsible exposure so our approach will be have a sponsor support the costs which are pretty modest. We believe that tax payer money should be allocated for social services, not greening events. So we are in agreement with most of the posts here. The other comment I would like to make is as a private citizen. As a Republican, veteran, and patriot I think its important that fellow conservatives and libertarians take a close look at the efficiencies and profit models associated with what has been called the "green movement". Industrial and construction energy conservation means a cost savings, therefore US job retention in a highly competitive global market. Additionally, we can probably agree that reducing cancer rates in women and children is a noble pursuit, so the case for pesticide and artificial fertilizer free foods is inline with "family values". Support local and organic farmers when you can.“Green” is not a political ideology as the left enjoys taking credit.“Green” or “environmental responsibility and conservation principles” are a capitalist set of organizational principles that promote profit and health. The time-line of ROI on “green investment” might be longer than most “profiteers” might be accustomed to, but in the long run, the savings are proven and efficiency has been established. Its high time that we give Toyota a run for its money by taking the very advice American consultants gave them.“Green” should not be confused with the 60”s and that ilk. If anything, our founding fathers and the Native American cultures that surrounded the original colonies are the founders of America organic agriculture, alternative energy (wind and water), and the efficiencies of local economies. Todays’ green pioneers and venture capitalist are focusing their attention to this new multi-billion dollar industry. If you are a capitalist, then get behind American ingenuity and know-how. On another note, it’s quite a shock to read some of these vulgar posts. Even as a former infantry soldier, I do expect gentlemen to behave publicly in a way that is respectful of fellow citizens, no matter the intensity of our differences. A civil society requires hard reason, critical minds, and a dispassionate analytical style that personal attacks only distract from. Being a Texan, I suggest that the gentlemen of the South, whether native or transplants regain their dignity and wit, and not succumb to lower reason or behavior. The proof of your beliefs are heard by the quality of your reasoning and skill in logical discussion. Thanks for your time. Joe |

That would be, as known in the Air Force, as KFB.

I would tend to concur on the weekened of bele chere all the usual rules go out the window, cops show their true colors, what natzi fascist's they really are. city council also turns against locals as in the wholedowntown is virtually offlimits to people who ply their trade outside what is traditionally considered outside the festival, which is rightoutstide the barrdicades. Not all of downtown, while taxi's,pedicabs, homeless bums, private buses are all allowed to continue their trade. this is unequal enforcement of an illegal rule. Not to mention freedom of choice for the entertainer. I might not whant to be part of bele chere proper & have to answer to people that I pay their salary's. |

that's all great but stop trying to trump democracy with a well organized minority who are representing an opinion. |
