I remembered growing up when everyone would be cooking all night, put up new curtains, clean and paint most of the house. They would have one new outfit for everyone in the family to go to church on Christmas morning and then go to the park to watch the police band perform. This was the time of year you would get to eat meat because people raised their stock for this purpose and they exchanged food items with family and friends. There was plenty to eat and drink and you would go from house to house celebrating the holiday and all you would hear is the island music coming from every house that had a radio. There was no christmas tree nor gifts but plenty of candy, nuts, popcorn and fruit for the children.
This was the time everyone became family and shared whatever they had to give with those who did not have enough. It was about the birth of Christ, now we look to spend money and don't even know what it is all about now. |
