i think south australia, because we are a country town according to the rest of australia. im happy with that i like country towns and the people are generally warm and friendly. plus we have some of the best restaurants as well!

south australia is one of the worst states in aus. its good if your rich, or have a cushy job and married and own a nice mansion there, but othewise its F**CKed. Ive lived in every aus state and this is true. queensland is australias best state . the people, are generally warm and friendly in sa? what a load of bullsh*t. Its the most clannish and unfriendly place Ive seen in aus.

NT. nice place, not big enough but good ideals on how they treat aboriginals.

WA- i live there, but not the best by FAR.. they feel too much resentment to eastern states, there roads although often new, are too thin and ultimately is a state that is too arrogant.

ACT- lol. sorry act guys, im not counting you as a state or territory.

SA- not bad for a weekend.. but horribly boring.. i would HATE to live there most of all.

TAS- fu cking cool. but too small.

VIC- historical, trendy.. a bit too violent.

NSW- 2nd favourite state, the city is a head ache.. i grew up there so still love it.

QLD- a mix of awesome of all sorts, wish i was there. the best state of all.

I lived in adelaide 5 years and I saw and heard plenty of rubbishing of victorians by Sa people that makes you a pretty big hypocrite.

Its something to do with the sporting contests between the states, the afl and nrl has created state rivalries and the media feeds it.But the opposite happens to some states that seem like pals with each other like victorians, west australians and tasmanians say good things about each other, and like each other tasmania sees victoria as a good friend it liberated them from a convict colony and has a vital transport link. And wa people love travelling to victoria and vice versa and have quite alot of intermarriage and intermigration. While sa seems pally with nsw only .Nt is close with Act . nsw is pal with sa ,nt and act. Only queensland seems to be able to get on pally with every one and be liked by all the states in return.

Born and bred in Queensland. Lived in NSW, Vic, and NT so can only compare those four. Toured for a couple of years from Cook Town down to Melbourne looking for a 'better' place to live, and ended up back in Queensland. We just didn't realise we were already living in the best State until we tasted the other 3.

I don't think there's a 'best' state in Australia. They're all awesome in different ways.

it seems like most people here, note from OTHER states are most often saying QLD is the best.

so i think we have a answer. debate if you want which you will, but a tthe end of the day that is, and will always be the only answer

I still remember when I was young of the coldness and competivenes and racial divides of melbourne in the 80s. Then I got a job in a queensland farm and was treated warmly by the qld people and was welcomed in the pub and to parties. I easily made friends and I met a beautiful queenslander girl and loved her. Queenslanders taught me how to work and how to belong in groups. I always have a soft spot and respect for queenslanders for the warm way they treated me. I think queenslanders respect a nice person, but are quick to clobber a bad one, that was 20 years ago and I have heard things ave changed. There has been large migrations from nsw and lots of immigrants, and large price rises. So how is it today gottaliv, is that niceness still there?.

I've lived in ever state and the major city, they are all different and it depends on what you want from your life. For living, I love Tas, working I prefer the ACT/NSW, for a holiday, NT, WA, SA, western NSW & Q.

For an experience of wall to wall people, heavy pollution, incessant noise, violence and never ending lights, the cities and entire east coast of Aus.

That's the Qld I know and love. And yes, that 'niceness' is still here but disappearing with all the "Southerners" and foreigners bringing their garbage with them and invading our space! And I say "invading" because that's exactly what it is. Years ago people from other States looked down their noses at Qld and Queenslanders (some still do) but we are the only State which has held on to all the old values longer than the others. And now it's because of that, that people all of a sudden want to be here. We wouldn't care who comes to live here - and we get many thousands every month - but the trouble is, those people try to change where they're now living into something which they left behind to escape from. Also, Qld's crime rate used to be relatively low - not anymore!!! Does that sound familiar?

The next place where I've always found the majority of people to be open and very friendly is Darwin - tho the crime rate is very very high up there. Even the cops there are way more friendly than down south - and they've got much to contend with and that's for sure. They don't seem to hassle the ordinary people as much as they've got more 'real' crims to cope with than they can poke a stick at.

The "entire east coast"??? Beg to differ - from Brisbane up it's nothing like you describe and the further North you go the better it gets.

Im going to say NSW but thats only because i was born there. I have been all over Australia but west Australia and its all the same really, well up North was a bit different with the heat and rain, good fishing though up there.

It depends on where in each state you go. Every state has parts that are nice and parts that are not. You've just got to know where to look.
What I like about SA is that it is convenient yet not overdeveloped. It's relatively easy to 'get away from it all'. When I want some big city hustle I can always visit it interstate about an hour away by plane. It depends on what you're used to. SA quietly grows on you. For better or worse I guess SA has gotten into my blood. And I'm blessed to live in one of its most picturesque regions.

NT is pretty amazing as a travel destination. Camping, fishing, 4WD trips, and Uluru of course.
