Another absolutely pointless and discriminatory law.

Quote: "The Coalition Government is determined to reduce the harm to Victorian families caused by cannabis use, and prohibiting the sale of bongs is an important part of achieving that," Wooldridge said."

Sure, is the next brilliant idea of the coalition going to be bringing in lengthy jail terms for bong smokers who cut off the end of strangers' garden hoses to make stems for their homemade bongs?

Considering some of the plastics and other toxic materials that many homemade bongs are made out of it might be a good idea for the health minister to reconsider the ban on the sale of bongs, if she have enough nous to realise choofers aren't going to quit smoking marijuana simply because they can't buy a bong from a shop.

Joints actually waste less THC than bongs, good on you Mary Wooldridge. I'm sure Tally Ho and Ventti could do with a government ambassador in the health department.

This is what's called an "tough-on-drugs" image law in the context of the "War on Drugs". It'll have no effect on improving the mental wellbeing of smokers and if it did then I'm sure that the Coalition would've cited findings from studies in the US and elsewhere that'd support this law.

Only for "Victorian families"??? What's so special about "Victorian families"? What about all the other States? That's double discrimination!!!

They sell bongs openly in the Happy Herb shops all around Australia - for smoking "natural healthy herbs" of course.:)

All these farkwit governments can do is lecture people and intrude on liberties. This act of being so concerned about our well being makes me sick.

It's just another of those silly little "Storm In A Teacup" distractions contrived by governments. Divert the masses and rivet their attention on pissy little decoys while governments get on with their real agenda of ruining the Big Picture behind our backs.

"concentrate on my right hand while my left hand slits your throat".

Jeez they must think we're dumb!

Utterly stupid. There are far more substantial laws that Victoria can bring in line with other states, ones that might actually save lives.

Smoking implements for marijuana can be made (if some lacks a bong or papers) simply by putting a small dent in a soft drink can (to hold the marijuana) and piercing tiny holes in the dent, it's a well-known method of smoking but done only when there is a lack of smoking implements. A bit hard to legislate against.

Then there are hash cookies, and other methods which use alcohol or lipids to leach the THC out of the marijuana so it can be ingested orally.

In short, this law is just inane TOKEnism!

It's wrong. A lot of Victorian families like to smoke marijuana too and I guess Mary didn't consider that.

It's the same in some parts of the US.

Bong-making is quite easy. A fairly 'sophisticated' bong can be made very cheaply by shopping at the local hardware store. If you have a bit of knowledge in metalwork and/or pottery and you have access to materials and tools, even better.

How many thousands of dollars are being spent on just thinking about this yet another 'failed government initiative'? It hasn't even been passed or implemented and it's already a failure.

Much like making all cigarette packets an unattractive green - as if that will stop the dedicated nicotine addicts or anyone who wants to smoke. Where there's a will there's always a way and we Aussies are an inventive lot.

Who knows, the method with which they came to their hallowed conclusion that banning the sale of bongs from shops is a worthwhile idea hasn't been made public which you'd think would be a good idea considering we fancy ourselves as living in a democratic nation.
I'd hate to think they paid some private consultant for this advice, that'd be taxpayers' money down the drain to some overpaid dolt who has given erroneous advice. But we don't know whether that happened or not.
I think this law has merely been made for purely populist reasons.
The big health benefits to Victorian families Mary gave just don't compute. A lot of the problems which stem from marijuana-smoking have everything to do with its own illegality.
Although the law would be seen by a majority of half-intelligent people as being ineffective and a waste of time, it would still appeal to perennially-frightened ultra-conservative and ultra-religious halfwits who know nothing about the effects of marijuana other than the propaganda they've been fed.

Unfortunately our lawmakers can get a bit too inventive when it comes to mirroring the wishes of the public they are supposed to serve.

The new packaging will become an instant hit with the younger set whom this initiative targets. They will make it a status symbol ...'be with the in-crowd'... never be seen without your drab-green pack. Peer pressure. LOL!!

I think this is the more important part of the story...
----------

"Australia's Sex Party has said that a proposed ban on bongs will be seen as racist because it gives special exemptions to Middle Eastern communities for the hookah.

Sex Party president Fiona Patten said the Victorian Government's proposal bans bongs used by young Caucasians and water pipes used by Chinese, but exempts the hookah.

"How can you send Chinese and Caucasian Australians to jail for selling and displaying bongs and then exempt Lebanese and Egyptian Australians from selling and displaying their version of a bong?" the Herald Sun quoted Patten, as saying today."
----------

I don't even know what a "hookah" looks like - could you smoke dope with it? If so, the Leb shops will do a roaring trade in them if the ban gets passed.

Essentially a hookah is a glorified bong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hookah

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bong

The differences are that with a hookah the bowl holding the smoking material sits on top of the pipe and the mouthpiece comes out of the side (I think), whereas the mouthpiece and bowl (or cone) positions are reversed for a bong, bong-smokers put their mouths on the top of the bong and light the bowl (cone) on the stem coming out the side.

Many hookahs and their bowls are designed for multiple tokes and the tobacco is left smouldering in the bowl even when no-one is smoking it, whereas with bongs the bowls(cones) are intended for a single 'rip' at once and many cannibis smokers would regard leaving smouldering cannabis in a bowl as a waste. However hookah-smokers have been known to smoke a mix of tobacco and cannabis.

For all practical purposes a bong with hoses to suck on. The smoke bubbles through water before passing through the hose.

Once again irrational belief systems (religion) is used to restrict the mainstream population while allowing freedom to those invoking religion.

It's like the offense committed by anyone carrying a dagger ... unless they are a Sikh whose religion requires it.

We sure are. I'm not too sure how Mary will enforce a ban on bucket bongs either:

Why do the Sikhs have to carry a dagger?

It is one of their five K's, an article of faith.

Kirpan: Traditionally a curved sword, but many carry a small sharp dagger (symbolises defence against tyranny).

It's illegal to smoke whether from a bong or a hookah. I know this cos I once asked the owners of a Hookah at a Turkish restaurant if it was possible to see how it worked. They said that it was just for decoration and that using it would be illegal.

But, obvs if the hookahs can still be used the plan won't work. In the same way that not banning the ingredients for cocaine in cough medicene has kept cocaine alive.

There is no smoking whatsoever allowed in restaurants to my knowledge.

I guess the government hasn't figured out that you can buy them online from Amsterdam and have a bong at your door three days later. Banning the sale of bongs is only going to be sending our money overseas for the product, and is going to do nothing to stop smoking.

If you're gonna smoke it, you're gonna smoke it. Simple as that. How about they make alcohol illegal and legalize pot and save everyone a lot of trouble.
