Matter of Public Importance – Fiscal Policy, 5 February 2013

It is a pleasure to rise today to speak on an important issue of economic management. When we talk about the importance of good budget management it is important to remember one simple fact: if the tax-to-GDP ratio today were the same as it had been under the Howard government then the budget would be strongly in surplus.

Dr Emerson: By more than $20 billion.

Despite all the farck-ups, waste, increased foreign affairs budget - we could be in surplus. Thankyou Dr Craig Emerson ALP Rankin for having the balls to speak the truth and show how much a farckup Rudd, Gizzard & Goose are. Sorry you will not win pre-selection for your seat for such honesty.

And if you can decipher this ::

Dr Andrew Leigh ALP Fraser - A budget would be in surplus by more than $20 billion, I am informed by the minister. But if the tax-to-GDP ratio under the Howard government had been what it is today then many of their budgets would have been in deficit.

Overall budget Surplus but individual budget deficits? Spin at its bullsh1t worse.

John Howards government was the biggest spending government in Australia's history.....(lol)...seriously , how do you think he would have dealt with the Global Financial Crisis ?....I think your spin is best....(lol)

BTW Foo - I was praising Labor for their honest account of the economy. You have a problem with honest Labor members now also? LOL.

GFC under Howard .... No stimulus package (like Canada & NZ)... no pink batt fiasco .... no school building rip-off scheme .... A balanced budget .... No NBN ... No Worries.

And I didn't realise how socialistic the IMF was. Good luck them getting money from Abbott if he wins. The IMF compains how spending grew under Howards last 4 years to record levels. Not so much that the budget went into deficit though. And when the IMF compared the last 4 yrs of Howard to the 1st 2yrs of Rudd they didn't include the stimulus spending under Rudd. Why is that? IMF found Australia's debt had been falling since 1932. Really? I don't remember Whitlam or Fraser leaving a debt anywhere near $90b by the time Keating left office. And I worry about there accounting skills if going from a surplus to $250b deficit is debt decreasing.

So they pay 100 people to do a job that doesnt need doing and could have been done in half the time by half the workforce in reality? Thats pretty clever

Under Libs , the have a surplus, as they spend nothing and let roads , rail wharfs and all other infra-structure become delapidated and disfunctional.......they flogged off Telstra , and overnight everyone started paying through the nose for phone bills....guess who has to fix it?......if don't do maintenance on your house , it eventually falls down around you.......

A job that doesn't need doing?? For years people complained about how delapidated and under-resourced public schools were. The Feds at last spent money on them, while creating jobs in a recession, and you whine about that??

Foo Foo Foo .... reality still escapes you. Name 1 school building project where the government wasn't ripped off. That is what we are talking about. Don't worry you never answered before. You complain about waste yet are happy Rudd paid well well WELL above reasonable cost for buildings.

Put down your socialists red book, deep breathe and look at reality. Labor couldn't successfully manage a wh0reh0use in a mining town.

So you are accusing every tradesman and contractor in Australia of being crooks?
How about a few facts and a bit of objectivity here. Australia is one of the few countries that kept a AAA credit rating right through the GFC. Canada has only just now scraped back into AAA rating.

As much as I hate Howard, despite all his spending he still managed to give Labor a $20 billion surplus when they came to power.

I agree some schools did need some work, but where I live brand new schools were being renovated, I know personally that any quote was doubled because "the gov are throwing money around"
So yeah I do get upset when I see the hospital falling to pieces but brand new schools are spending nearly a million dollars on library halls that actually only cost $300k to build. Pretty sad when everyday tradies are smarter than the fools in charge

ACTUALLY Tokyo Rose I'm accusing the government of financial mismanagement over knowingly paying hugely over-inflated prices.

And USA has been a dogs breakfast economy since '07 and was only downgraded mid last year & I hear the USA is suing standards & Poors for $5b for leaving its grading ranking high. So what is your point about the grading system?

And we, the tax payer, owe 67% of Australia debt. Yes Labor borrowed money from future tax revenue of Australia to pay the bills today. Do you think we, teh tax payers, will see teh benefit of the 4.5% interest we are charging ourselves? WHY? Because it doesn't count as foreign debt & we keep out AAA rating.

While we're here - Australia had a big deficit last year & will have a big deficit this year yet 2 countries we give hundreds of millions to, PNG & Solomon Islands, had surpluses.

If we didn't have a AAA rating you'd soon be whining about it

No you'd be whining about the fact that we'd been downgraded from AAA. Go back to your cooking.
