I sympathise with you. We are well down the same path. 42% of Aussies now get welfare. We have a generation coming through whose parents have never worked. The idea of get up & have a go & work hard for what you want is gone. by 2018 less than 50% of our population will be working & the government will have to tax the buggery out of workers & business just to pay the welfare bill.

Last time I checked less than 1 percent of the US Federal Budget was spent on welfare. Most of it goes to Defense. Would be happy to look at some current percentages if you have any at hand.

And if you unhappy in the States and want to move to a more capitalist country Australia is certainly not it. In fact you'd be hard pressed to find anything more capitalist than the States. Australia has health care, education and pensions - you don't sound like you would want your tax dollars to go toward that.

There's also no respect for older workers in Australia, most are put on the scrap heap regardless of skills or qualifications. Reckon it's best to stay put and try to get whatever is left of medicare and social security after much of it's been spent on debt, war and subsidizing the wealthy.

Yeah, but that was a very mixed bag. When people refer to 'welfare' they mean they are jobless, not working poor or trying to get qualified. The numbers need to be parsed for clarity.

those numbers don't include family tax benefit A & B which would take the number who get welfare to over 50%- but I don't exactly know what those payments are so didn't count them. So more than 1 in 2 people get some sort of government handout every week/fortnight.

So I wonder why we're going broke?

Sorry to say it old mate but i think you would be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. I doubt the perception you have of australia is anything like the reality, australia appears to fast tracking down the shitter.
A 50 year old craftsman or anything else will find it near impossible to get a permanent job and bloody hard to find any work that actually requires two brain cells. Prices of houses are insane, cost of living out off control, wages are pathetic, you are probably better off staying where you are. I am an australian and am beginning to profoundly hate the place, not the country itself but the filthy political system that runs it.

I think its a great idea for White Americans to come and live in Aus.Another term with Obama and the place is gonna start looking even more like a failed state afterall.
In fact I would guess the US is alrteady past the tipping point.Such a shame.
