All they have to do after some time or not, apply for a visa to emigrate to Australia and they will get in, what a joke!

Excuse my ignorance Australia, but why can't you just torpedo those boats.doesn't your navy need some target practice. Just asking. And the sharks do need to be fed.

Don't be a dickhead Casper.....(lol)....Rudd didn't say that at all. If PNG is prepared to resettle genuine refugees , that's good. It will prevent most of the false refugees from landing in Australia , and PNG can send them straight back where they came from......no doubt Abbott & Co will try hard to block any good solution.....until it's their problem to fix. If Howard didn't involve Australia in the Iraq war , there would be very few boats , very few indeed.......

The Greens have lost no time in decrying the policy as cruel; apparently they find people smuggling and drowning at sea to be acceptable.

Well well, another smart political move by Rudd.
It's about time someone had the stones to put a policy out there like this.

But the big question is - will it be just another broken election promise by Labor?

Probably.

If the UN summon up too much righteous indignation over this then Australia's next step has to be to jettison (Rudd's word) the Refugee Convention altogether.

If the UN won't respect our sovereign needs then we ourselves have to.

I believe we already have a generous refugee re-settlement policy, for asylum seekers awaiting approval in various countries around the world, but we have every right to protect our borders and affirm our borders, it is our country.

Love him or loathe him, Howard was the one who famously proclaimed:

"We will decide who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come."

No one since, on either side of politics, has had the moral fortitude to again put it that unequivocally.

Finally Rudd does something right. If only he had done this earlier, all the third world, non white garbage like LOL & VOR & all the rest who sailed in on their refo boats would be languishing in the jungles of PNG, getting eating by the local head hunters, not posting crap on here about the country that was stupid enough to have let them come here.

This may work . The danger ,as usual , is a negative response from Tony Abbott , dragging it back to being a "political" issue , and not a serious immigration issue....maybe Rudd should meet him half-way and try the temporary protection visas as well.....I t would generate a lot of respect for politicians in general , on both sides , if they just sat down and agreed on a plan , without the stupid political point scoreing crap....its gone on for far too long...

It is not hard to get a boat from PNG to Aus
and those who were released in the community
can't be shipped out. Many srilankan boat people jumped from New Zealand to AUS.

They should be sent back straight away instead.

Those words are very true ....but I have always regarded it as supremely hypocritical coming from John Howard...he was instrumental in blatantly destabilizing the whole middle-east region, which is now trying to get out to anywhere with some sanity and stabilty......words are cheap , and his actions tell quite a different story..

That's it ... and Howard was right in that regard - I certainly support the idea that we should assist those less fortunate, but not this 'storming the gates' approach and it is up to us to draw the line.

True, we need to mind our own business then the fall-out is not our liability.

You seem to be missing the point here.....people who illegally enter Australia from PNG automatically aliens and nothing to do with refugees or the UN thing......unless they're fleeing persecution from the tribe of King Oingo Boingo , who intends to cook them and eat them.....(lol)

Thats the point Sairla.....the terms "push factor" and "pull factor" have been used constantly in the political arguement , but Howard created the biggest and most enduring pull factor by a huge margin.......people forget too quickly , that every other political party , and 90% of voters were vehemently against our involvement in the attacks on Iraq , but Howard went right ahead with it anyway. We illegally invaded the borders of another country , and now we are paying for it.

Probably wouldn't have mattered what party was in at the time.
Due to the circumstances, Australian troups would have been sent anyway.

Granted, but that does not explain how those refugees manage to bypass heaps of countries between there and here that are religiously and culturally more compatible, and instead reach all the way over to distant Australia which is far less compatible.

The reason for that is not of Howard's doing.

Rather the reason is the very artificial contrivance of UN member nations who are non-signatories to the UN Refugee Convention.

Again, those are the nations that are the exalted "grey" nations on the Convention map: http://tinyurl.com/ld54cru

Ever since 1951 those abstaining nations have been getting away with evading their share of moral responsibility to provide refuge, instead burdening the rest of the world. In fact it could be argued that those evasive countries are primarily responsible for causing need for refuge elsewhere in the first place.

When those lop-sided UN decisions/abstentions were being made international Law, John Howard was only 12 years old.
