Widows are treated like untouchables in West Bengal. Bengalis throw away widows out of home. This is a hard to believe reality. We Bengalis always try to show that bengalis are some greatest people but reality is we are one of the most selfish people in the world. I know this cause I'm bengali myself. I have seen things happening in my own house.

Lalita Goswami (a bengali) was married only a few years when her husband, a Hindu priest who beat her and abused drugs, died of an apparent overdose. She was left with three young children.

Still, she said, being married was better than being a widow.

That ordeal has lasted for decades. After her husband died, the brother-in-law who took her in kicked her out, forcing her back to her parents' home in Kolkata. Her brother saw her as a financial burden and neighbors ostracized her. In a bid to keep peace, her mother exiled her and her two youngest children to Vrindavan in central India. This is how bengalis treat widows.

Goswami spends her time at Mahila Ashray Sadan, one of several widow ashrams supported by charities here. Her story is a reflection of most widows in West Bengal. Bengalis worship women in the symbolic form of Durga at the same time they treat widows like trash. Double face of bengalis????

Widows are still traditionally considered inauspicious, particularly in Bengali culture, their presence at weddings and festivals shunned and even their shadows seen as bad luck.

The government of West Bengal state, where most widows who live in Vrindavan come from, has since promised to provide them with government housing and a stipend exceeding what they'd receive in Vrindavan, which is in Uttar Pradesh state.

"Very rarely do you see people go to Vrindavan because they're devoted to the cause," said Rosinka Chaudhuri, a fellow at the Center for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta. "Sometimes it's blackmail, or if you're not loved enough, you take yourself up. But the numbers are staggering."

Status of widows worst in West Bengal: NCW
Dhananjay Mahapatra, May 1, 2012, 03.41am IST
NEW DELHI: In a strong indictment of the West Bengal government for having done little to ameliorate the condition of widows both socially and economically, the National Commission of Women (NCW) has informed the Supreme Court that their status in the West Bengal state was the worst in India.
The NCW arrived at this conclusion while conducting a comprehensive survey of the 5,000-odd widows and destitute women living in Vrindavan in pitiable conditions who are solely dependent either on alms given by pilgrims or doles from the government.
On the directive of the SC for a comprehensive survey of the widows in Vrindavan, a high-level team comprising Girija Vyas, Mohini Giri, Achal Bhagat, Anupama Datta, Yogesh Mehta and Sheeba Chowdhary made a six-month intensive survey of the women and found that 74% of them belonged to West Bengal followed by 3% each from UP and Chhattisgarh.
The NCW in its survey report submitted to the SC on Friday said: "It would be fair to say that the status of widowed women in Bengal is amongst the worst in the country and in modern times poverty is another reason for the arrival of more and more women from West Bengal."
A majority of the women did not have pension and ration cards and survived on earnings from `bhajan ashram' and alms. The `bhajan ashrams' give each woman Rs 3 for singing hymns for four hours.
The living quarters of these women do not have basic facilities like toilets, electricity and running water. "The women who live in temples and ashrams are the most deprived as they do so because of no other option or because they were brought to Vrindavan by gurus who run the ashrams and they get shelter in return for doing chores such as cooking and cleaning," NCW said.
The report comes in response to a SC directive given on November 14, 2008, on a PIL filed by advocate Ravindra Bana on behalf of NGO Environment and Consumer Protection Foundation highlighting the need for urgent steps to ameliorate the condition of the widows.
The NCW was caustic on the manner in which the `bhajan ashrams' treat the widows and other destitute women, 89% of whom are illiterate. It said the `bhajan ashrams', which formed the core of the lives of destitute women, "are a law unto themselves."
"These institutions are the focal meeting points for destitute women and according to some a source of vital economic activity. An expert group may be required to be set up for the scrutiny of their working and financial transactions," NCW suggested.
The recommendations of the NCW to improve the condition of women in Vrindavan were:
Issue of shelter could be addressed by building old age homes and night shelters with basic facilities like water, electricity and toilets
Trained health workers for periodic check-up of these women
Audit by district level authorities to check the work and financial transactions by bhajan ashrams Government and other NGOs should provide employment opportunities Improve working of pensions scheme

West Bengal: Where women life is cheap

West Bengal is a state where womanhood is worshipped in the form of Durga. But it is also a state where women is treated like shit. Double faced bengalis always tell others that they give women due respect & women are free to pursue their own destiny. However, ground reality is just opposite. Take any bengali newspaper & you'll find pages filled with crime against women.

"mother sold her three young daughters for just 185 after her drunken husband threw her out of their house. Purnima Halder, 35, was so desperate that she could not even afford to buy the children a meal.
She sold the older two children, aged ten and eight, for 185 rupees and then gave her four-year-old away for free.
The incident took place in West Bengal's South 24-Parganas district.-Bartaman Patrika"

Incidents such as one above are very common in west Bengal. According to Phulrenu Guha (activist) the women are often found to be the victims of injustice and inequality. Cruelty at home is the fastest rising component in crime against women in India the last 5 years, data released by the National Crime Records Bureau shows.
West Bengal, which accounts for 7.5% of the country’s 1.2 billion population, leads the states’ share with a nearly 33% share in total crime against women during 2010-2012. West Bengal has the highest number of cases of cruelty by husbands and relatives. Dowry deaths have increased by about 3.7% since 2010.

Time & again UNO has published reports on poverty & prostitution in West Bengal. West Bengal is called "Prostitutes' Heaven". NCRB's latest statistics also show West Bengal is most cruel towards women.‘city of joy’ recorded a whopping 1,161 incidents of crimes against women in 2012. West Bengal tops the list once again with 3,711 cases of kidnapping and abduction of girls. Abducted girls are often pushed into prostitution.“It’s strange how Kolkata has gone from being especially safe for women to being generally unsafe." Supriya Chakrabarty.“One evening, it happened that literally every few feet, I was accosted by eve teasers and even followed by a group of young men. Mind you, this was at 5.30 pm! I think I’m right in saying that women no longer feel safe in Kolkata and I have to wonder, does Mamata even care?” said Sonia D’Souza (name changed) who works at a reputed corporate house near Park Street.

This is amazing as how bengalis try to pose as some of the best ppl around the town. but reality is they are horrible ppl. My current girlfriend told me about her experience with a Bengali guy, whom she met in her mid twenties. Her experience was horrible with him. She says he was completely weak in bed.Bengalis are usually weak as a men cause of Bengal worm inferiority complex. Bengal worm is a famous derogatory slur. It means small weak pen!s of Bengalis.
