Tsunami and civil defense experts in Hawaii say last month's earthquake and tsunami in Samoa should raise awareness of the threat of a similar disaster happening here.

Hawaiians are fortunate tohave the expertise of Gerard Fryer and Ed Teixeira. The importance of a Tsunami Emergency Evacuation Plan is the key. Earthquakes in the Hawaiian Archipelgo have the potential to create devastation and chaos. The moment an earthquake is felt or one has information, consider the potential impact at the location you are at the time. Make a decision and take prudent action. Coastal parts of Hawai`i are high danger zones.

The wake-up call for Hawaii occurred in 2004(?) Indonesian earthquake/tsunamai that killed thousands and affected several countries. The earthquake of 2006 at Puako was a reality check and reminder. The recent Samoan earthquake/tsunamai is another reality check and reminder for us living in Hawaii.

Let's NOT wait for any warnings. There won't be! Take the responsibility to safeguard yourself and your family. Just know, if you feel any tremors AND you're near the coast or on the shoreline and in the water...Please get to higher ground. It will save your life.

I don't know how many reality checks and reminders we will need before we actually know what to do when another earthquake hits our island state. Be proactive.

If you don't blow the first siren which is supposed to alert folks that they should seek information about a potentially dangerous condition, don't blame them for not taking measures for their own safety.

State CD is good at making these types of statements, weak on taking meaningful action. Let's all hope things are different this time around.
