This is the first biography of the Albanian national hero Scanderbeg (1403-1468) published in England for more than four hundred years.

The son of a prince of Albania, he was educated in the Muslim faith as a hostage at the court of Sultan Murad II and given the title bey and an army command.

In 1443 Scanderbeg escaped to his homeland, abjured Islam, and formed a league of princes among the Albanian chieftains.

He proclaimed himself Prince of Albania. To resist the Ottomans under Sultan Muhammad II , Scanderbeg received aid at various times from Venice, Naples, Hungary, and the pope.

Written by the late Harry Hodgkinson, a former naval intelligence officer who served under Ian Fleming, this engrossing and elegantly crafted book is an attempt to bring the reader closer to this famous historical figure and to set him in the dramatic context of Albania and its history.

SCANDERBEG

in Turkish Iskender Bey, real name GEORGE KASTRIOTI (1403?–68), Albanian chief and national hero.

The son of an Albanian prince, he was sent to Constantinople as a hostage when the Ottoman Turks began to occupy Albania.

He was educated as a Muslim and enlisted in the Turkish army. His military skill earned him favor with the sultan, and he was given a command.

In 1443, when he learned that Albania had revolted against the Turks, Scanderbeg deserted and returned to his native land.

Gjergj Kastrioti “Skenderbeg” by Joseph J. DioGuardi
Gjergj Kastrioti “Skenderbeg”

“Matchable to the Greatest of the Great”
–Edmund Spenser (Elizabethan poet)
by Joseph J. DioGuardi

Kastrioti was the son of an Albanian prince, Gjon Kastrioti, who ruled the Albanian lands in the Balkan Peninsula at the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the fifteenth century.

Gjon had kept the invading Ottoman Turks at bay for more than twenty years when he was forced into a deceptive peace treaty in 1422 with Sultan Murad II to secure the rear of the Turkish army in Southeast Europe and spare the lives of his people from the wrath of the Ottoman Empire.

To guarantee the arrangement, the Sultan took Gjon’s youngest son, Gjergj, hostage to Adrianople, the European capital of the Ottoman Empire. Here, Gjergj was sent to the Ottoman military academy where he excelled in all ways and adopted the Moslem alias “Iskender Bey,” or Lord Alexander after Alexander the Great.

I appreciate Scanderbeg Albanian
Irrefutable argument for this is the crown of his head combat with the goat, the Lord of pelazgian, the first of Albanians - Zeus.

This is a royal crown that held military Pirro of Epirus, Alexander the Great and later their successor, as our hero himself asserts in his letters, Skanderbeg, the holy crown that can not decided on the head any legitimist Serbian, Greek or whatever, but direct descendants of noble blood holy Pelazgian-Illyrian-Albanian.

The Albanians are the oldest inhabitants of the Balkan peninsula—the descendants of the ancient Pelasgians and Illyrians. Under Scanderbeg they saved Europe by beating back the Turk.

Although a small race, they have given to the world several great men, including Pyrrhus, Alexander the Great, Saint Jerome, Constantine the Great, Pope Clement XI, and Crispi.

That their racial capacity for self- government is high is shown by the fact that their leaders have been Catholics, Protestants, Greek Orthodox, and Mohammedans, whereas among the other Balkan races religious persecution rages.

SCANDERBEG, skan'der-beg, Albanian prince: b. 1404; d. Lissa, Albania, 17 Jan. 1468. His real name was George Castriotes, and he was the fourth son of John Castriotes, an Albanian prince.

The sons being given to Sultan Murad II in 1423 as hostages of peace, the sultan named the youngest Iskender Bey (whence Scanderbeg) and made him a janissary after having poisoned his three brothers.

When Scanderbeg's father died in 1432 and the sultan annexed Albania as a province, Scanderbeg determined to revolt.

He had gained distinction in the Ottoman campaigns, and his opportunity came when, in 1443, he was sent to Hungary against the Christian Huniadi.

He entered into agreement with the latter, gave him the victory, and fled to the sultan's powerful fortress of Croia, of which he gained command as the sultan's representative.
