Albania has a majority of Hellenes, specifically North Epirotans in the South ,who along with Greek Vlachs of Albania create a clear majority in the occupied lands of Northern Epirus.
Today, taking in account and their worldwide diaspora there are 400.000 North Epirotans seeking liberation from Albanian brutal authorities.
In addition, there are Montenegrins near Skoder,Skopjans near Prespa and Ohrid lakes, other Slavomans near Elbasan and innumerable gypsies all over the state.
Turks have long lost their identity after consistent admixture with the muslim Albanian population creating a new Turkalbanian nationality.
But this was not enough for this poor Balkan neighbour!!
Albanian Communist authorities fearing that such a multiethnic statelet could be destroyed from inside forced two different nations until then, Ghegs and Tosks to unite in a single Albanian nation, making one more example of ethnogenesis under communist rule like Moldova,Bosnia and Fyrom.
Ghegs and Tosks are not only two different nations ,but also two different human types, as Tosks are of indigenous mediterranian type with shorter structure, when Ghegs are taller and more Alpine.
The relations between the two basic groups of Albania ,Ghegs and Tosks represent a constant rivalry for superiority, which very often oversteps the laws in force.
There is a rich folklore as well, mainly jokes, that emphasizes the advantages and the shortcomings of the ones or the others depending on the narrators and their identity.
In addition, Tosks from Southern Albania are better educated and highly cultured. They migrated to the lowlands and now they live in compact settlements maintaining close relations with the emigrants in Italy. This makes them more open to the world, while northeners Ghegs are very conservative and stubborn and resemble to Talibans with Asian customs.
This rivalry has reached the most acute and destructive forms in political antagonism. Southerners respondents told us how during the time of Sali Berisha they were ousted from key state positions and then Tirana was flooded by highlanders from the North. They said that the entire state machine was changed, following the clan principle first, and then – the regional one.
In 1997, after the collapse of the pyramid schemes the South rose against Berisha’s government and Southern Albania was entirely cut from governmental control. In order to get the situation under control there were appeals to the highlanders from the North to support the government and to advance armed and well equipped on the town of Vlorë. Albania was faced with the real danger of civil war, which would have increased not only the tension between the North and the South but could have split the country.
Now, in the 21st century, at the boost of human development ,the time has come for the ultimate split of this communist experiment on a single Albanian nation.
Toskeria and Ghegeria will soon follow the road of Czechoslovakia,Yugoslavia and USSR.
