What do you think of the future of Somalia-Somaliland? Can Somaliland be a viable state to stand alone? What would it lose from the united Somalia entity and gain by being a nation state on its own? South Somalia can boost of a fertile land for agriculture but I doubt Somaliland has this much of fertile land and the availability of water is another complication!

South Somalia depends on the Ethiopian rivers of shebelle and genale (jubba) for its irrigated land, some 200 000 hectare land i guess. When Ethiopia
starts using those rivers for irrigation the Somalis will be in trouble.
In addition Ethiopia could lay claim on South Somalia as it was Oromoland until recently as the map below shows.

It seems right when you see it at glance. But, the reality is diffrent. What are resources as per your understanding, and which one is most important. I have learnt recently that the most important resource is the people. I am not saying others are not important but are not decessive. If you have hard working and disciplined people, then be sure resources are every where.

Somaliland needs peace first, and hard working and peaceful people. Also, don't forget Somaliland can survive just by selling or leasing port to Ethiopia. What Somaliland needs is peace and free of external influences.

Why do we claim lands each other? The time has changed and don't forget we all (including Somalies) are from the same root (Ancient Ethiopians) and what we all need is peace and compromize. The time of war and ancient life style is now over. We can make Horn of Africa one nation where all the people can live peacefully, while ethnic/clan or religious freedoms are well respected. Let's love each other, all of our cultural and religins are beautiful. No one is above the other. We all are equal. We never give foreigners a chance here. They don't need our peace.

Ethiopia and Kenya should recognise Somaliland because Somalia still claims their lands.

Keep on dreaming but one thing is for sure, Ethiopia will split into smaller independent states in the years to come.

Ethiopia can not use any rivers, because Ethiopia is a fake country created by the European colonialism and must be divided.

Ethiopia is so blessed with water unlike any other African country with the exception of DRC that is twice as large and far more blessed.
The irrigation potential in the Genale and Shebelle region is somewhere between hundreds of thousands to a million or more hectares.

http://www.somwe.com/transboundary.html

" In both basins, Somalia is a vulnerable end user located in downstream area, which is the least favorable position to be in Hydropolitical terms, as the upstream basin country, Ethiopia, can theoretically divert and pollute the water in the rivers. This makes Somalia to be permanently very dependent upon the actions taken by Ethiopia. Although the issue of the Juba and Shabelle Rivers is hidden and powerful one that could explode at any time in the future, no negotiations could be initiated before addressing and solving other more fundamental causes of the historical conflicts and the current tensions. In view of region's current political conditions as well as the historical facts, it is unlikely to realize the desperately needed cooperation and future water conflict seems to be inevitable and it may also turn to be another layer of international conflict before the mid of the century, if nothing is done."

Really? The Somalilanders have built a formidable army and are conducting elections! On top of that they have a resentment at heart towards the other side of Somalia! Tell me how are you going to realize your dream of 'greater Somalia'.

Well, Somalis are arming themselves to the teeth to protect their big land "from Djibouti Bab el Mandeb to all the way down to NFD" against northern Ethiopian insects, our number one enemy is northern insects.

Europeans colonialism created Kenya and Ethiopia and both these fake countries will eventually die a natural death due to political rivalry and ethnic violence..

Somalis will always be the winners!

Entertaining this kind of hostile wishes and attitudes toward far bigger and more powerful neighbours is madness.
