America is performing its familiar role of propping up a dictator

Full story: www.independent.co.uk

Could there be a more accurate description of the Obama-Brown message of congratulations to the fraudulently elected Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan? First the Palestinians held fair elections in 2006, voted for Hamas and were brutally punished for it – they still are – and then the Iranians held fraudulent elections in June which put back the weird Mahmoud Ahmadinejad whom everyone outside Iran (and a lot inside) regard as a dictator. But now we have the venal, corrupt, sectarian Karzai in power after a poll far more ambitiously rigged than the Iranian version, and – yup, we love him dearly and accept his totally fraudulent election.

My opinion on current situation in the world is that America itself is a dictator, who invented "democracy standards" and has been pushing them since WWII I think. If you wanna be cool with America, either submit it like Georgia & Ukraine or be economically and politically loyal like the British.

What do you say?

This Afghan war, launched to destroy the Taliban and install democracy, according to George Bush, turns to be another nightmare for the West.

Now, they end up supporting Karzai who has utter contempt for democracy and made a mockery of it.
When you look at it, it has all the echo of Vietnam.

In between, soldiers die needlessly supporting a dictatorial regime because the politicians haven't go the guts to say: "Enough is enough, let's get out of here!".

Kazai knows his people better than the Americans. Good life for his people won't come to Afghanistan just by having western democracy alone. Letting the other guy win will just bring another set of corrupt people to the government. So why not having him as the head of the government.

I think that NATO engaged in Afghanistan because Afghanistan represents a major source of Al Qaeda jihadis, trained in Afghanistan (and Pakistan) to come to the West and kill. The Taliban is there and so we engage it, but Al Qaeda was the primary target. The Taliban is a horrific organization from which no good can come. Afghanistan only vaguely like Vietnam and dramatically different in several ways.

As for me, were I the Pres, I'd tell the world that the USA can no longer afford the cost of that war and that we are immediately beginning to withdraw and one year from today the USA will have no military stationed in Afghanistan...but that we will continue to kill Al Qaeda where ever they are...and that the UN must deal with the issue of the Taliban. The political repercussions for the USA would be bad, but no worse than what we now suffer for our current efforts.

The US didn't go to Afghanistan to help them build democracy. They went there to kill the Talibans and Osama Bin Laden. They went to Vietnam to stop the communists from spreading out to other S.E Asian countries. They didn't go to Vietnam to build democracy there.

More British lives have been saved by the war against terrorism at home than the folly in Afghanistan.

Our intelligence has uncovered several networks of terrorism cells in UK, discovered numerous arms caches, and explosive workshops in the country. Surveillance is quite advanced now, telephone conversations and internet websites are monitored, etc...
Our police spends a huge amount of resources tracking down terrorist sympathisers, checking the travels of plenty of suspects, etc...

This is meaningful and productive work to protect us from terrorism; conducting a war in Afghanistan isn't.

Brown inherited the Afghan war from Blair, himself influenced by Bush, and never spoke against it, but insiders say that his heart isn't in it. I think that he will try to find an elegant way to get out without upseting Washington, which is his priority.

You have no idea what the "folly" in Afghanistan has saved, since you do not know what deeds were avoided by operations there. In the USA we too have uncovered sleeper cells, but some of those were found based on intel gleaned from ops in Afghanistan.

Daily Horoscope for January 5

Scorpio

Let the past stay in the past for now. Even though you may have fond memories of intense experiences, the Virgo Moon sees to it that you have virtually no desire to go there again just yet. This is your opportunity to show others what you can do in a more civilised environment. Don't try to shout down someone who is rude enough to interrupt. As unlikely as it may seem, the softest voice has the biggest chance of being heard today.
