This Bud's for who? Belgians

The king of beers will wear a new European crown. Budweiser, a classic brand from a company that has more closely identified itself with Americana than practically any other, through such images as a team of ...

Another american icon goes foreign. Guess this is going to happen even though Obama said it would be a shame if A-B was bought by a foreign company. He sounded like he was going to do something to find a domestic buyer, but in the end that was all talk. Which american company will be the next to go? Wonder if Vegas is taking bets?

This is not a matter of politics. This is a consequence of of America's accelerating decline as a world economic power. Our debt is too great, our educational standards have slid to the lower quartile of the world's developed countries, our balance of trade and labor is pitiful, and our general populous is physically and intellectually flabby. It took generations for us to degrade to this point and it will take generations (beyond my lifetime) to recover.

Expect to see a parade of these symbolic, and practical, displacements of America's former greatness in the coming years.

So much for tradition and being true to your history. I don't drink beer and hope Anheuser Busch goes broke for selling out to any foreign country for money. Doesn't matter if its 50 trillion dollars. They sold out. Bunch of money grubbing drunks. If I did drink beer (which means I would have to start watching NASCAR and sitting on a trailer porch, I would never drink Busch beer again.

America is on sale at a huge discount...nearly 50% off!

Back in the old days, before the new millennium, the dollar ruled.

Now we're being ruled...first the Chrysler Building in NY and now this.

Hey, Chicago Tribune, it's 'for whom', not 'for who'!

Sorry to be so picky, but it's the second time I've seen it this week. The other time was in the article about this year's new words added to the Webster dictionary!

This is a newspaper, not 4chan.org ! Spelling and grammar mistakes are *not* acceptable.

[end rant]

P.S. I agree with The Future Is Now, this is not a political issue whatsoever. This is a long-standing American firm selling out for lots and lots of money.

How can anybody other than the owner stop the sell of a beverage business? It's not like it's a defense contractor. Besides Obama is not even the president yet.

At first I was hopeful that a Belgian company might actually improve Bud,but unfortunately they claim they will continue to use the same recipe of 95% water and 5% dog urine, with some barley and hops added so it is still legally beer.

Good riddance to Budweiser. It is tasteless swill and just maybe the Belgians could make it taste like something other than rabid dog urine. I would personally pay to drink bottled water than drink free Budweiser while out in a bar. I would also rather pay $10 a bottle for decent import beer (like Unibroue) than drink free Budweiser.

Here here.
I agree. The only good american brewed beer I have found is Shiner they sell Bock, Black Label, Blonde, etc. Maybe you cannot get it in Chicago, proper, but it is advertised in the Milwaukee area.

Apparently 'EDZ' has never tried any of Sam Adams many great beers(?) Their US (only) headquarters are in Boston (SAM - NYSE http://www.bostonbeer.com/ ).
While they don't come near Bud in size, they make up for it with quality!

"If approved by shareholders, the acquisition of St Louis-based Anheuser-Busch Cos. by InBev will create the world's largest brewer."

InBev is already the world's largest brewer with or without the acquisition of Budweiser.

Belgians please put us out of our misery- Bud, along with all other MASS produced (not micor-brews) has to be the worst swill. PBR is a close second...

Iam from belgium and believe me I don't think Imbev will touch
on the history or quality of Anheuser-Busch.

We Belgians are very proud and serious aboud ower traditional and historic knowledge of brewing beer.

Offcores it's all aboud making more money and more marketing but I know that we have respect for the American culture and will promote the bud beer in Belgium and all over the world as an the best traditional American beer.

Notting will be changed.

Your post is an interesting example of a cultural divide. The U.S. does not take its brewing traditions nearly as seriously as Belgium and Germany. Nobody in the U.S. would be upset if the formula for Budweiser were changed, as long as it still had the same basic qualities of being a light-bodied, moderately hopped pilsner-style lager. As long as that basic formula remains intact, Budweiser will continue to be the best-selling beer in America.

And those of us in the U.S. who take the art of brewing beer seriously -- unlike 99% of Budweiser drinkers -- wouldn't mind if the formula were changed drastically to make it taste something like a real beer.

You seem to be reading people's complaints here and fearing that InBev will not respect our brewing traditions. That's not what people are complaining about. They are complaining about foreign companies buying American brands (yet ask them if they care that Ford owns Volvo and Mazda or GM owns Opel and Vauxhall). Even if InBev promised up and down to never change the formula for Budweiser, these xenophobic clowns would still be crying and wailing.
