Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Tuesday criticized the Obama administration's initial response to violent attacks at U.S. diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya as a campaign centered on the U.S. economy took a detour into foreign policy.

Iran-Contra Affair / Boland Act.- Historum - History Forums
www.historum.com/.../34206-iran-contra-affair...
This thread is a response to the Reagan Legacy thread. Many people over there are stating this is a negative aspect of Reagan's presidency

The Boland Amendment

The Sandinista government was freely elected by the Nicaraguan people. However, because of the fact that the Reagan administration was strongly opposed to their ideological position, it was falsely claimed that the election was a sham. This was used as an excuse to increase support for the Nicaraguan Contras, which were essentially a rightist terror organization

The Reagan administration constantly attempted to downplay the evil nature of the Contras, but reports of their atrocities eventually resulted in a large sector of the American public turning against the administration's policy of support for the Contras.

When it was discovered that the CIA had directly engaged in acts of sabotage in Nicaragua, it lead to the earlier Boland amendments, but the administration continued to support the Contras, because the early versions did not prohibit all support. What finally brought about the final version, in which all military funding support for the Contras was prohibited, was the international scandal which resulted from the CIA placing mines in the harbors of both the east and west coasts of Nicaragua, which resulted in the deaths of civilians, not to mention being an act of war.

With the Boland Amendment, the US was supposed to no longer be providing monetary support for the "military" operations of the Contras. However, a plan was cooked up to circumvent this restriction. Sell arms (mainly anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles) to supposed moderate elements in the government in Iran, which would in turn help secure the release of American hostages still being held by the Islamic fundamentalist group which later became known as Hezbollah.

The funds from the illegal sale of weapons were used (illegally) to continue support of the Contas. Reagan denied knowing anything about "The Enterprise" as the operation was known, but in his book Under Fire: An American Story Oliver North says that Reagan knew about it and approved of it.

A newly published report raises questions about some established narratives in the early life of President Obama, suggesting the president's upbringing was one of privilege and not hardship.
The Washington Examiner published a 10-part report detailing Obama's path to the White House. Some of the information appears to conflict with the narratives the Obamas and the Democratic Party have pushed, most recently at the party's convention in Charlotte.
At the convention, Michelle Obama said they "were both raised by families who didn't have much in the way of money or material possessions."
Examiner Executive Editor Mark Tapscott questioned that.
"I'm sure he had a difficult childhood given the circumstances with his parents, but from a financial standpoint and social standpoint and so forth , it was not an underprivileged childhood," Tapscott said.
The Examiner reports that the Indonesian neighborhood, Menteng, where Obama's mother and step-father raised the young Barry Soetoro was the most exclusive in Jakarta.
Later sent to live with his grandparents in Hawaii where his grandmother was a bank vice president, Obama attended the exclusive Punahoe school. He later went on to Columbia University and Harvard Law School.
But while he worked in the city's impoverished Southside, he lived in exclusive Hyde Park.
Of his 12 years as a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School, Time Magazine said in 2008: "Within a few years he had become a rock star professor with hordes of devoted students." But student evaluations obtained by the Examiner tell a different story. In 2003, only a third of students recommended his courses.
"It went steadily down in the last five or six years that he was there. He was among the lowest-ranked professors," Tapscott said.
Nor did the future president leave any record of scholarly writings, while similarly credentialed colleagues had a prolific presence in law journals.
"He showed up to class, he gave his lectures and he was gone," Tapscott said.
The Examiner found sharp contrasts between Obama's memory of his legal work, and the record of it.

Your analysis is a direct hit. The reason our fellow citizens so not understand all the facts about various government programs is the lack of information by the media. Watch your local news programs and what leads, whatever bleeds. Never anything substantive about the current fiscal matters or what is the cause and effect possibilities in these matters.
I've been posting an article that appeared in the New York Times, of all papers, dated September 11, 2003 by Stephen Labaton. The title is “New Agency Proposed to Oversee Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.” The first sentence of the article is as follows; “The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago.” The article goes on to describe the battle that was taking place between various groups including the National Association of Home Builders and Congressional Democrats that oppose the proposal. Among the Congressional Leaders against the proposal was Barney Frank who stated..”These two entities - Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - are not facing any kind of financial crisis” along with Melvin Watt, Democrat of NC who stated “I don't see much other than a shell game on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing.”
The proposals went down in defeat. The rest is history.
The strong arm tactics that were then used by the Committee Chairman Frank and Chris Dodd in the Senate to lower the requirements are subjects that should have led to an outcry from the media and the attorney general, but nowhere did we hear any warnings about what was happening except for this article.
Fix the media and you have solved the country's problem. Ask your local media to carry meaningful news, not the garbage that they pass off as news. Amen.

It sure does bring up a valid question.

Are teabaggers admitting they are that stupid?

Is Barney Frank one "magic" homo?

The one man who brought teabaggers, America and the world to it's financial "knees". Pun intended.

He is a bad ass and should run for president.

Then again, maybe he shouldn't.

Do you realize how many people would be subject to his charming ways?

Bush engineered the complete collapse of the American Economy and Financial System in all of 8 years, not since the fall of the Roman Empire has there been such a calamity....... The Bush name will forever be tied to the failure of the United States of America.

Some of you are in denial and refuse to accept the historical rebounding of America from total collapse to producing over the last year alone the greatest increase in wealth in the history of free markets.

That's a total personal economic reversal from the last days and times of the Bush debacle.
